    Just a little tip for you. If I have to seal something ( which I seldom do, I like the smearing like you do) I don’t have the patience to dap the gloss medium on with a brush. I take my gelli plate and roll a thin layer of mate medium on and put my piece on the gelli plate, like you would do a normal pull. You can also take your wet brush and damp it on the crayon and then paint, it gets very watercolour likely.

      @jclosestudio  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a great tip, thank you! I'll have to try that. I only use Neocolor quite sparingly, so the dabbing method is not too bad 😉. But I am grateful for any timesavers

    Adding that if you want to paint with them like watercolors, it helps to use a palette, especially for mixing when you don't want the residual marks to show.

      That's a great tip, thank you! I haven't tried to work with them in that way yet, but it would make a fantastic portable alternative to taking watercolour.

    I recently discovered that the Karin Decobrush Pigment brush pens work really well with the neocolor II. I wouldn’t have expected it but they are amazing together for mixed media art.

      @jclosestudio  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interesting! Yes, you can really mix any wet media with them. There is a possibility that the wax will clog up your nibs.

    Hello, I use a thin layer of Dorland’s medium on top of my finished pages. It makes the pages waterproof.

    • @jclosestudio
      @jclosestudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good idea! How do you apply it? Does it not smush the crayon?

    • @sarahbradley1653
      @sarahbradley1653 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jclosestudio It has never smudged the crayon, watercolor or gouache I applied it to. It takes just a very thin layer and I apply with my fingers.

    I also use mat gel medium, ( a very soft flow paste), as my water so when it smears it also seals it.

    Hi Jeannine, It's a nice video to have a look at how different artists use the same materials, I do use them as you sometimes, I only have a couple of Caran d’Ache Aquarelles but maybe I will collect some different tones soon, they make me happy when I use them over rough cotton paper as they give me a bold texture that I can soften them later or lapping them over wet papers over other aquarelles, fun. I have subscribed to follow your journey greatings from another TH-camr and artist 😍🇳🇱🖌🖍

    Your sketchbook paper really holds the line of the neocolor II mark compared to the wash that I get when I apply water to my neocolor II.

    • @jclosestudio
      @jclosestudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So much depends on the paper you use. This sketchbook is on the cheaper side and soaks up the paint a lot. It's worth testing a few papers if you have options.

      @@jclosestudioThank you! That seems like such an important point. I was wondering because in a video that I watched yesterday there wasn’t any line left…paper makes sense!😊😊

    • @donnacarraway9182
      @donnacarraway9182 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A question about the finish on the paper after adding the gloss medium… does the finished piece have shiny and matte areas? Have you ever sealed with just matte medium? Is there a special reason that you choose to use the gloss? TYSM! Very informative video!!😊😊😊

    • @jclosestudio
      @jclosestudio  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@donnacarraway9182 Yes, and I think on smoother paper you'll also be able to wash away the line better.

    • @jclosestudio
      @jclosestudio  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@donnacarraway9182 Thanks, Donna!
      I use gloss medium because it's slightly clearer than matt medium. To make matt medium matt they add little particles, so the colours don't show up as vibrant after matt medium. But in my sketchbook I use either, I don't mind if parts are shiny and others are not there.
      On finished paintings I add a satin varnish at the end, so everything will be the same sheen, even if some areas were more matt and some more glossy.
      Hope this helps, let me know if it's unclear!

  • @swl9270

    I find the blending outlines is dependent on the paper used z. Cheap plus papers grab and hold the pigment and don’t move with water application. Higher grade papers seem not to grab with will sustain some intense scrubbing.
    I also like to make a puddle water on my painting pallet and dip the crayon in water, dip
    In the puddle on the pallet to make “watercolor paint”.

    • @jclosestudio
      @jclosestudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh you’ve reminded me that I used to dip my Neocolor in water, and it makes lovely creamy lines. Completely forgot about that. Thanks for reminding me!
