  • There are certain things all horses and riders should be comfortable doing with ease to make riding a stress-free experience, getting your horse to come pick you up for mounting is one of them, but once we're on the horse we don't want to be dismounting and mounting for every little thing, and opening and closing a gate is one of those little things we have do do quite often when riding, so why not learn and teach your horse to do this task without having to hop off.
This video is going to show you how I position this horse to be able to open the gate, and then close the gate before we head out.

Did you get a new mic? Sound quality has improved drastically!
I can visualize keeping her between the bridle reins and how you are applying pressure to get steps in the correct direction. Great content! Thanks so much!

You bump her with your feet to move her how about bump her with that gate so she will step away. Only started a few hundred ranch horses opening a gate is a first week deal. Hell as some as you are leaving the round pen that should be the girst gate. You did make it harder on her and you. Open with left hand ride around end of gate close bump her if needed one step back to latch

Thanks for commenting And yes there is always more than one way to skin a cat . If getting the gate open was the only objective then what you are saying is correct. I was just using opportunity to let her find relief by moving only one step away from the pressure that she was feeling . The gate was simply an opportunity to get better communication from me to the horse . The release on the other side of try sets the stage for bettter communication in every situation not just getting through a gate
You wouldn’t find an argument from me on what you said though it was just not the reason behind what I choose to do
      Thanks

@@cappelhorsetrainingandshoeing i actually use it to get first week colts off my feet. Them usually have been threw 100s of gates being led. More than likely have been bumped with a gate to move out of the way so nothing new there. When I first open a gate in the round pen usually first time I have asked to move off a foot and they tie it in faster just doing a job if that makes sense
