What does it take to make an Off Grid Hockey Rink?

  • It may seem pretty simple....but what does it take to make an off grid hockey rink?
We've been on this off grid homestead for 10 years now and we are finally working on one of our dream projects. It's a lot of time and money but we view it as an investment in our kids and our health, 'cause hockey is healthy!!
So what does it take to make an off grid hockey rink? To make it happen we logged and cleared an additional 1/3 acre, levelled a 70'x110' rink area and dug a 100,000 gallon pond, moving 100's of tons of dirt in the process. Then we need to actually flood the rink a half dozen times before the first skate....

That is incredible guys. You girls are the best present a parent could hope for. Respect to you all, (and Dave :) )

OMG! Now that was "epic" in all senses of the word. Talk about a major project, design a plan, implement said plan by many minions toiling endlessly, huge machines gobbling up the earth and trees, major excavation followed by torrents of surface water all leading to the ultimate 'goal' of a functional ice rink. Way too cool and so worth it to see the enjoyment of the family and friends. Thanks from Yanks.

I attended a small college that had an outdoor rink, and to get the ice glass smooth, we used a home made tool. In affect, the tool was like a large squeegee, made from water pipe and a piece of carpet. Garden hose connected to water pipe handle about 5' long with a "T" fitting at the other end and about 4' of water pipe to each side of the "T" which is fastened to a piece of carpet 18" by 8'. Water flows through handle and out through many tiny holes in bottom pieces of "T", through the carpet and gives a very smooth finish to the ice. We used hot water from a huge tank for best results. Enjoy your rink, here in southern B.C. we don't get enough cold weather to have one.

All the local schools in Timmins Ontario had outdoor rinks including the boards and a heated shack with a woodstove included. We had a pond in our little suburb of Timmins, where we skated, we built a heated shack with wood that we salvaged from an abandoned gold mine, and a wood stove from that mine's tailings pond watchman's shack. We had a ball growing-up in my Town!

Raised near Edmonton so freezing the pond was no problem. 12 or 15 cows using the pond to drink from became a problem. Granted the waterhole was off the 'rink' area all of that consumed water from under the ice caused the rink surface to become concave. Near spring is was almost impossible to shoot the puck from end to end without hitting the net.

The Mosquitos will love their new home. 🙂
You may want to dig out the outlet a little bit, so that you will actually have a dry bank to the pond. That way it won't just be surrounded by mud....maybe.
I think throwing some fish in may be a great idea......also hiring a beaver to maintain it. 😃

Watchful1 electric zappers probably aren't a great idea on an off grid homestead, but attracting some wild life like birds, and maybe even fish or frogs could definitely help, but I've been around lots of natural ponds that are a nightmare, even with the wildlife.

I notice too, that it comes with "rink rats". I was once a rink rat in my home town! For those not familiar with the term "rink rat" it is a Canadian term for young Hockey fanatics who hung out at the rinks 24-7 and were often co-opted into cleaning the ice with curved shovels!

Have you named the lake yet? every great body of water needs a name!!!
for better ice try using an inverted T put a regular hose attachment on the handle end, drill small holes across the base and attach a small 1/2 meter strip of canvas to disperse the flow of water evenly. we used this in Alaska and we always had great ice.

I've totally enjoyed all you've done up to date... but I must say... THIS is the best!!!! but the results are worth the effort... Totally outta sight!! One afterthought... and I know hindsight is 20/20... but you shoulda diverted that water flow until the hole was ready... but... even still, it came out great!!!
