We have our own gold mine!?

  • It just dawned on me.....we actually have our own gold mine. We can just go there and dig up the gold. Its not likely to make us rich but if we want a bit of gold, we just go there and get some! We mine and then smelt placer gold in preparation to make our own golden rings.
    Part two of this video will hopefully include a modern goldsmith of some sort. If you know of a @moderngoldsmith, let us know.
    check out the girls product on our web store: www.gridlessness.com/
    and IG: / gridlessness
    Want your own gold mine? Then you're definitely one of us. Leave a comment, subscribe and join the adventure.

    You always screen wet. You don't care if your screening bucket is full of water or not. Pour water over what you are screening so you wash that flake gold off of larger rocks. Gold clings to those rocks and if you just throw them out you throw out your gold too. Been mining for 50 plus years. Trust me on this. WATER is your friend!

    Something worth a lot more than the gold you're mining, is your family bond. It's so heart warming to watch. Love your videos!

  • @johnbowen1493
    @johnbowen1493 2 ปีที่แล้ว +86

    Looks to me like you need to turn your water pressure down just a little in your main sluice. If you are moving larger flakes all the way through that mat it's washing too hard. Either slow down the water or decrease the angle some only by 1 degree increments though. Sometimes just a half a degree of slope makes a HUGE difference in what you catch. Also make sure you pan your tailings to check for wash through. If you still have gold in your tailings something is not right in your processing.

    As a dental lab tech I made several rings from my placer gold. Most jewelry shops will have a book so you can order wax rings to cast rings by the lost wax method. There are a lot to choose from and it's easy. Question: are there any bends in that river? I was a panner and the best areas to find gold is in bends in rivers and streams, THe gold collects in these areas.

    • @wesbaumguardner8829
      @wesbaumguardner8829 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, downstream side of the inside bend mainly. That's where water loses its velocity and drops the heavies.

    I've got a great tool for digging in cobbles. It's a garden tool that has 3 hooks that look like gaffs offset.
    In fact if you sharpened the ends it would be great. But anyway you just pull it across the stones and it just rakes them out the way of the smaller gravel. I've also got an antique one with five hooks on but it's a bit heavy and big and hasn't got a handle. The other one is perfect. Since I showed it in a video I've seen a few prospectors using them. I'm sure you will be able to make one with a blowtorch and a vice.😉👍💚💛❤

    How wonderful to be able to find and refine your own gold! Next time, maybe you can sort out the black sand and iron with a magnet before melting? The goldsmith will probably mix with a little copper to get a good alloy for your rings and then the total volume will also be a little bigger :) Well done by you.

    Hi, well I work together with a jeweler that do cast single items custom made stuff according instructions and my design ideas. Have a few cut Garnets ranging from red, yellow to mint green that can be mounted - but this workshop do not make any designs themselves.
    They listen, see sketches and make a wax mold to accept/ reject or modify - then they make the piece. But sure better to make a few of the same to save time a little.
    Think it is fun way to work, but do not have any customers :) for them.
    I have a gem cutter in Bangkok that cuts the raw Garnets for me. but in best case - if you have good gem grade roughs at best 7 from 10 stones come out very good, many times inclusions .
    Lose a lot in weight, but the good ones are super nice - prescission cut and very sparkly.

    Lucky you to have your own source of precious metals!
    Starting with silver and gold smithing is not that difficult really. There are quite a lot of instructive videos on YT to learn from, and the tools to begin with are basically smaller standard tools like pliers, files, a smallish hammer, a smallish soft head hammer, and a small soldering flame like the one you used for smelting. So why not try your hands at that trade, y'all are practical enough to do it. You don't need the fanciest stuff from start. The important thing is creaativity and you have shown that you have that too.

    That is a pretty good patch of ground. What are the regs about running a 4 inch dredge in that area. That would be what I recommend. I know the water is cold, but that is what a wet suit and a heater coil is for (dredging is usually too abrasive for a dry suit, you'll wear a hole in the suit pretty quick). As to setting up a 2-tier sluice box, on the first clean out run both the upper and lower mats. if you are getting a lot of color on the lower mat then you are either running too much water or your angle is too steep for your material. There is a balance between water flow and angle and the quality of your gold and "leaverite" (leave'r right there cause it ain't worth nuthin'). Dense fine leaverite means you need more flow, larger dense pebbles need steeper angle to clear the sluice, but finer flakey style gold can wash too far down. Your color seems to be a consistent size, all of it in the sub-picker size, so tuning your sluice shouldn't be that difficult. Also your lower tier sluice looks to have an almost identical slope. You typically want them a few degrees different, so they filter through the material at different speed and force. With them both the same if the first one misses the gold then the second one will most likely also miss the gold.

    Get a Hydroforce nozzle and you will be able to "vacuum" the shallow layer and increase your production.

    Think your water flow needs to alittle less in your sluice run if it's to forceful u will lose alot of the flour an possibly larger flakes. Always double check your tailings pile. Gold can be found at any depth all the way down to bedrock top layer may produce but over years of run off the deposits are greater on the bed below what your findings.

    After you go through all this would be easier to pickup with a magnet? Never panned for gold but I wear it. What a great experience and learning process for your girls.

    Yeah what you've done there does not purify the gold. It gets rid of some metals, but it does not remove other precious metals like silver and copper. To do that you really have to mix the gold with a bunch of silver. Then you use certain acids to remove the silver and copper, which leaves pure gold. You then put the gold into solution using a combination of acids and the final step is adding a certain substance to the liquid containing your gold which will cause the gold to drop out of solution and leave you with 99.999 fine gold. To get .9999 fine gold you have to use chemical processes to remove everything but the gold

    How far are you willing to go? My family are goldsmith jewellers, with my Dad who started his apprenticeship when he was 16 years old, and has been making jewellery from nuggets like yours for over 50 years! And my younger brother started his apprenticeship at 17 under Dad's watchful eye. Only catch, we live in Northern Territory, Australia . . . happy to have you come and stay with us if you need accomodation. Plenty of places to go gold mining in the NT too, by the way?!?!?!
