The Little Iron Horse Goes Logging

  • Julia gets our Canadian horse Mec into the harness and the little iron horse goes logging. If you get a chance, research the Canadian horse a bit and discover why they are known as the little iron horse. They can do it all, and Julia finally gets the opportunity to prove that our Canadians can haul firewood logs.
    We don't have the right harness yet but this settles it, horse logging has moved way up on our project list. The advantage goes to the horse when their are no roads for equipment or a truck to use. Given that we are surrounded by forest, horse logging will be a very fun, active way to get a few milling logs and fill our woodshed.
    Ok, you must check out Joseph TeBulte's new YT channel here: • Last Horse Standing - ...

    This sure brought back good memories. My grandmother farmed 80 acres with one horse named Queenie. Queenie pulled the plow in the spring, the sythe in the fall and hauled logs in the winter. Queenie could be hitched to the draw chains on a log in the bush, then told to go home on her own. My grandmother would keep an eye out for Queenie, go out of the farmhouse, unhitch the log then send the horse back on her own. That horse was what kept food on the table and a fire in the old cookstove.

    Rember... when you were a child, and your parents told you we are going to granny's house. That is how it feels when I get a new video from the world's best family, Gridlessness! I want to gift all the girls with a nugget of knowledge... Texas cowboy science says; Smooth is strong... Rigging breaks on a jerk, ( that's why people are a jerk when they do wrong things), slowly ease into the pull intensify the energy so points of stress are not over-loaded by inertia, and not actual load. Breaking, catastrophically, has potential to harm equipment, people, and feelings. ( Yea, I saw how Juilia looked when the rig broke the second time ) Don't get me wrong, I would rather have these 5 kittens than 5 burly Bobs for my logging needs anytime, cuz these girls have heart!. Thank you for sharing during these shut-in times. Agappe love, Richard.

    Like Jeff mentioned that harness is for driving a wheeled vehicle. Pulling harness has a triple thick tug and a neck collar. Not that you can’t use the driving harness,you just have to take it easy as you found out. I started just like Julia with a light harness and had the same setbacks. Keep at it anything that is done with horses is worth it.

    Wow! I wish you lived a little closer, I have a shed full of horse tack including at least 2 sets of complete harness that you could use. Since that buggy harness is way too light, you could try using a cinch from your saddle as a breast collar and use light chain or climbing rope for tugs, proper tugs for logging should be about 4 inches wide and 4 layers of heavy leather thick.

    Have your girls look up logging sleds, it will reduce drag and lighten the load for the horse. I would think two straps wrapped in cloth might be good for a less spendy harness.

  • @tomrichardson3107
    @tomrichardson3107 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was watching your video again to see how you could have kept the harness fro snapping. I remember when I used to go to pony pulls as a teen and the driver was always able to ease the team into the load. Most of the time you had your horse snap the load like you would if you were getting a vehicle unstuck. Just a thought Julia. 😎👍👍⛄🐎🇺🇸

    When you go from static to dynamic loads on that harness, you enter a whole new world of stress.
    Maybe you could cut them to length, then pull them onto the path, one at a time, and at that point you could bundle 2 or 3 together and pull them to where you're going to process? There wouldn't be that tugging going on anymore.
    Great stuff though.

    Great video as always - greetings from the south Okanagan. My late father grew up farming with horses and talked about certain horses that liked to pull and would sometimes break the stitching on the collar if they were overloaded. Dad told of getting in trouble with his father blowing the collar apart pulling either hay or stones off the field. We had horses for 17 years, but I never tried to get them to pull anything other than our girls on a toboggan. Anyways, stay well up there guys and thanks for the memories.
