This truly does sound amazing! - I've been searching all over the internet looking for the right noise. I own the same car, completely stock but want to open up that V8 thunder now.
Q. On idle, is this really loud or can you cruise past the neighbours houses nice and smoothly?
Q. Does the high flow cat make it louder? - I don't want to change cats.

It's a low rumble so it's not too loud, unless you want it to be. It's definitely louder than the silent stock sound but quiet enough to drive around your neighbourhood without people thinking you're a lunatic.
I needed new cats and the high flows went in for two reasons.
1.) they're less restricting. They apparently add horsepower and could possibly improve fuel consumption - that last point I'm skeptical of.
2.) they're a lot less expensive. And with how low my car is, I didn't want to spend $1800 on cats that will likely get scraped and gashed on a speed bump or driveway entrance.
I believe my exhaust diameter is 2.25" or maybe 2.5" but can't remember now. E38.org may have the answer for you or try bimmerforums.com - or just ask the parts desk. When ordering exhaust parts they knew what sizes were needed by entering the car data.

Yes sir! I'm sure there are gains but no clue just how much - never dynoed, and I don't exactly race it either.

It's all legit, o2 sensors fully operational. Matter of fact got new ones installed when swapping cats.

What did you do to make it sound like that i have the same car and stock its super quiet and i want it to sound like that
take it to your local exhaust shop and have them replace the rear mufflers with straight pipe, and if you still want more after just go back and ask to replace the cats with something that breathes better. i feel the 2nd part isn't really necessary. this'll be your cheapest option.
just make sure you get tips first so it doesn't look as ugly as mine did.
Hi, Just admiring your PRE_FACELIFT CLEAR TAIL LENS! I have the same ones, your car must be September 1998... Much better quality than the facelift lenses, with the double thick plastic inside and much nicer red color and nicer look at night too, deeper red color. There are very few of these lenses out there. Do you know where to possibly buy them new? I cant find them.

So do you just delete the mufflers and add a 3 inch straight pipe, keep original cats? No issues at all with cars computer o2 sensors if original etc??
Dane Viehe you can definitely do that and you won't have any issues. but one of my cats were bad so I "upgraded" to some high flow cats.

Adam_Aphillyated I cant remember for sure but I think Magnaflow. They were pretty cheap..... stock was hella pricey. But based on the exhaust smell, I think “high flow” just means that they do nothing.

honestly if you're on a budget just do what i did and take it to your local exhaust shop. they'll know what to do. just buy tips first!!
Not rocket science people. Any German V8 car you simply drop the muffler(s) and you'll get a louder exhaust note. Have done it to both my 740iLs, Audi A8, and Mercedes 500SL. Since they come stock pretty quiet with a resonator and muffler eliminating one of the two will give a louder result. Now with a 4 cylinder it's a whole different story, personally I think they don't sound well using this method. lol ;)

Rick Henderson to each his own. I liked mine this way but there's nothing wrong with keeping it OEM - if that's your preference.
@@ZAKIZZY Hello Friend, great video, one thing I notice on my 1995 740il is that when I drive in D its silent and if I switch to 4S it changes the sound of the intake making a sutle sounding very sporty without changing anything in the muffler, I do hear it when windows are up and air condition is on, I would love to hear it passing me by but I do not like sharing my car.lol..lol
