Best sedan ever..... BTW - the GPS works fine. I've used it to travel from Iowa to NC and it works great. They haven't added many major highways in the US since 2000...
I had a 2001 740i in silver with the sport package. It never saw rain or snow, I sold it in 2012 with 36,000KM on the odometer. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it in the movie The Game with Michael Douglas. Selling it, needless to say, has been one of the greatest regrets of my life. This body (E38) is truly the last stunning 7 series by BMW (I never bought another) I also had a 1985 (E28) 735i and a 84 730i in 5 speed manual (another stunning 7 series). I had to sell them all when I had to move overseas. But of all, I miss the 2001 740i the most.

I have a 1999 BMW 740i M Sport and I love it. Mine is Titanium Silver Metallic with black interior. My dad owned a 1997 740i years ago that was beige on beige. Obviously that one was pre-facelift and predated the sport package but was atill a nice car to drive. The sport pack really does wonders for the car though making it a lot more athletic.
Briefly owned a 740i shorty, at the time I was more into E39s so I opted to sell it and get another 540i. Still have 2 E39s that I daily, but I miss the 740i so badly.
I purchased a 02 750 in the rear of a used cars lot in TX, it had been sitting 7 yrs,as a non runner,Silver/Black leather super clean,after a fuel pump,water pump,rad,Liquid Molly oil treatment,I just had to save it,Thus car has been sitting most of its life,I can’t ever picture me selling it!!Iv owned several 3- series,but nothing like this 750,crome package interior,cell phone,I looks good sitting in my driveway just sitting Steal !!V-12 Baby,Gangster life!!not many 750s made it to America 🇨🇱
I own a 1999 740i that’s still in immaculate condition and I don’t think I will ever sell it. I’ll sell one of my kids before I get rid of my shorty 7.😅
I bought a 740i, 1998 in 2002. Bronze exterior / peanut butter interior. It had me on top of the world. In fact, i kept towels and cleaning supplies in the trunk just in case i was across town and it rained. The center cup holder is way too delicate, i dont use it. The transmission issue cost me $1800 for a rebuild in 2013. After about 2016 it started slipping again. I was totally disappointed with the sterio system, so i replaced it with a alpine, boston speakers, xtant amp and 10 inch subwoofers within 6 months of purchase. I pull it out and drive it at least once a week in the neighborhood for gym and shopping runs. Next time i may buy a new transmission. Just got a Porsche 911, 2003 convertible. But i have my eyes on a 1980-something rolls Royce in good condition for under $35k somewhere in the u.s. maybe a silver spur, Im about 5 yrs or less away. I plan on having a small, poor mans car collection. My favorite is my GMC Yukon, 2017. It rides smooth as silk. I put all my miles on my 2019 Mitsubishi mirage, 40 mpg. It takes me everywhere

I have owned an e38 728i sport here in the UK for the last 20 years and cannot sell it also. I have also bought a short wheel base 750i facelift, one of only 113 made in RHD but it needs some work to get it running. These cars seem to get under your skin…😊

Never had any problems with it. .......In 2001, BMW released the new body style - The 2002 model BMW 7-series, but it didn't drive quite like the E38 models. It was also ugly for my now higher taste for a BMW. So I happily traded my 1995 BMW E38 model for one of the last three 2001 BMW E38 740i M-Sports Package, with a $10,000:00 discount. I have never regretted every dime, time, and energy behind the wheels of this superb BMW car. ......This car single-handedly caused the competing Mercedes S-Class to suffer very badly in sales during that period. .....The 2001 BMW 740i M-Sports became the king of all top mass production V8s for over a decade and to a large extent, still a top notch luxury sports car today. .....The BMW E38 styling and sportiness became the benchmark that most high-end car makers still continue to copy or replicate even in 2024. ......At gas stations, gyms, service shops, kids schools, etc, this car is respectfully complimented by all and sundry. They usually ask me - how much would you want to let this car go? .....Thanks to BMW for all the joy, peace, and prestige that this car has brought to humanity.🙏🏽👏❤🥂💐😁
This was my first 7 absolutely loved it on #7. The only thing I dont like about my current 7 is the airride suspension, I owned 2 Lexus L' and 5 S classes, and just decided to stay with a 7. Loved the 08' 7, and really liked the 745 look but never bought one due to the reliability issues. Great review on the 7. I always look at the 740il. Thanks BMW for great cars.
LOL. I have the same exact mode. A 99 Short Sport in Cosmos Schwartz Metallic. The first year of the sport. Bought it in 2020 and have loved it every sense. I've owned 7 bmw's and the E38 is by far the best one.
My dad took me to and from school in his 98 7er as well before he sold it : WBAGF82050DK80979 Then i bought bought my own 98 7er as well about 8 years after he sold his: WBAGF82070DK83415 (Mum had a red 740i as well) (idk her vin) But now I regret selling mine cause ive never seen it again and here in New Zealand they usually just end up in a junkyard.. Its cool my family wasnt the only ones who loved this car as well
That was my first car I did all the work myself and first bmw. I had 97 at the end it needed engine work right after Covid mechanic wanted 4k I had to let it go cause I got injured I miss that car man
My 99 740 looks very similar. Mines Cosmos Black with black guts. M-Pars from the factory, xenons, nav, dsp & heated + Massaging seats! Mine being a none sport, it does have the chrome exterior package. Being a black car, the chrome really works, I'm my opinion. It's a car I'll never sell. These are alot rarer in the UK.
Really liking the prices on these as a fixer upper, but sales taxes in my state are ridiculous. I’m just not sold on the design language of current sedans.
It is an easy fix: just get some construction adhesive (comes in tubes at your local HD) and clamp it for a day until glue dries. It will never sag again. That how I fixed it in my 740i.
I have one now i just purchased in March of 23. Kicking my ass timing chain guides went. Nobody wants to do the job here in Atlanta. Anyway I'll eventually find someone but i need that steering wheel in my life 🥰 How can I find it
I am the only timing chain expert in Atlanta. Hit me up if its not done yet or it was done and you getting a timing code that will not clear. I know all the secrets of this incredible engine.

The 740i E38 was available in Europe with a 6 speed manual trans in the pre-facelift model 1994-1998.
