  • When Ramana Maharshi was alive, one of the persistent inquiries at his satsang's was about suffering and the nature of suffering itself. In this episode of The Sacred Word, I will explain Ramana Maharshi's final truth about the nature of suffering.

You explain eastern philosophy is such a simple and engaging way. You and others like yourself help me understand my spiritual journey. For me its been a very painful process. But now I learnt to embrace pain and process it allowing myself to heal. Nothing is permanent. We are all part of the grand illusion of a master chess player.

Dialogue between Ramana Maharshi and Paramhansa Yogananda:
Mr. C. R. Wright, his secretary, asked: How shall I realise God?
M.: God is an unknown entity. Moreover He is external. Whereas, the Self is always with you and it is you. Why do you leave out what is intimate and go in for what is external?
D.: What is this Self again?
M.: The Self is known to everyone but not clearly. You always exist. The Be-ing is the Self. ‘I am’ is the name of God. Of all the definitions of God, none is indeed so well put as the Biblical statement “I AM THAT I AM” in EXODUS (Chap. 3). There are other statements, such as Brahmaivaham, Aham Brahmasmi and Soham. But none is so direct as the name JEHOVAH = I AM. The Absolute Being is what is - It is the Self. It is God. Knowing the Self, God is known. In fact God is none other than the Self.
D.: Why are there good and evil?
M.: They are relative terms. There must be a subject to know the good and evil. That subject is the ego. Trace the source of the ego. It ends in the Self. The source of the ego is God. This definition of God is probably more concrete and better understood by you.
D.: So it is. How to get Bliss?
M.: Bliss is not something to be got. On the other hand you are always Bliss. This desire is born of the sense of incompleteness. To whom is this sense of incompleteness? Enquire. In deep sleep you were blissful: Now you are not so. What has interposed between that Bliss and this non-bliss? It is the ego. Seek its source and find you are Bliss. There is nothing new to get. You have, on the other hand, to get rid of your ignorance which makes you think that you are other than Bliss. For whom is this ignorance? It is to the ego. Trace the source of the ego. Then the ego is lost and Bliss remains over. It is eternal. You are That, here and now . . . That is the master key for solving all doubts. The doubts arise in the mind. The mind is born of the ego. The ego rises from the Self. Search the source of the ego and the Self is revealed. That alone remains. The universe is only expanded Self. It is not different from the Self.
D.: What is the best way of living?
M.: It differs according as one is a Jnani [knower] or ajnani. A Jnani does not find anything different or separate from the Self. All are in the Self. It is wrong to imagine that there is the world, that there is a body in it and that you dwell in the body. If the Truth is known, the universe and what is beyond it will be found to be only in the Self. The outlook differs according to the sight of the person. The sight is from the eye. The eye must be located somewhere. If you are seeing with the gross eyes you find others gross. If with subtle eyes (i.e., the mind) others appear subtle. If the eye becomes the Self, the Self being infinite, the eye is infinite. There is nothing else to see different from the Self.
He thanked Maharshi. He was told that the best way of thanking is to remain always as the Self.
Later the yogi [Yogananda] asked : How is the spiritual uplift of the people to be effected? What are the instructions to be given them?
Maharshi: They differ according to the temperaments of the individuals and the spiritual ripeness of their minds. There cannot be any instruction en masse.
Yogananda: Why does God permit suffering in the world? Should He not with His omnipotence do away with it at one stroke and ordain the universal realisation of God?
Maharshi: Suffering is the way for Realisation of God.
Yogananda: Should He not ordain it differently?
    Maharshi: It is the way.
Yogananda: Are yoga, religion, etc., antidotes to suffering?
Maharshi: Who suffers? What is suffering?
(No answer. Finally the Yogi rose up, prayed for Sri Bhagavan’s blessings for his own work and expressed great regret for his hasty return. He looked very sincere and devoted and even emotional.)

My life is constant of entangling and disentangling with the Jiva, sometimes I go months that I feel I am the Jiva, and can't for the life of me go a step back to the atman, I just know for experience that time will pass and I know that I will once again step back. Even now that I am more connected to the atman I feel there is something missing yet. But still what's missing is in the Jiva, somewhat I fully know that I am observing the Jiva.

I too have similar experiences. Once I became aware of the Jiva and experienced the Atman, all I wanted was keep experiencing the Atman and end the suffering feeling I have as the Jiva. I have noticed that there is a deep wanting and also a deep resistance in me that keeps me in this bondage. I notice it (the resistance and the disconnect) when I go into distraction (scrolling video after video, watching a movie, eating chocolate, etc, being in a mindless state and focusing on things outside myself). Like I'm sabotaging myself.

In every dream we make the same mistake: we identify with the person (ego) and regard the rest as 'outside world' in which there are 'others', which can be very frightening. Each dream it takes awakening to realize that the personal perspective was wrong. Awakened out of the dream, you can realize you were not just the person in the dream, you were everything, the whole dream, ALL of it. In all dreams consciousness is all there is so THAT must be what you essentially are. The rest is illusion, just a dream. You are consciousness in which everything appears, by which everything is experienced and of which everything is made. Look back on any dream to verify this. And ponder whether leaving the personal perspective in the dream called 'life' might help to awaken.

There is a concept in our religion - moh maya .Moh means emotional attachment. Maya means all this illusion , materialistic world . When we connect moh with maya we experience suffering . Well to go on this peak where u just feel urself as a sukshm jeev or sharir means aatma. It need a lot of spiritual awakening, kundalini awakening , kriya yog help in this . But for formal people who are maximum in this world living a grahasth life . For them lord Krishna said in srimad bhagawat geeta a important line - nishkam karm . Means whatever u do and whatever u achieve . Just do without intention and surrender to me all ur deeds . Don’t be happy in happiness, don’t be sad in sad moment. Be neutral . This is all maya which try to make u emotional . Don’t get moh with maya . Thanks for good lesson brother . I really like ur content. Om shanti . 🍀🕉️🤍🙏🏻

There is such an interesting story in the Old Testament in which Moses mistakes his rod for a snake. Or, his rod transforms into a snake and then back again. I think this is the same lesson as in your “snake and rope” analogy. But, how does one separate from the Jiva? How, how? Just understanding intellectually doesn’t seem to be enough. Meditation doesn’t seem to be enough. Help!

    • @sandtx4913
      @sandtx4913 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

It may be the kind of meditation you practice and/or what you're trying to achieve. There could be some controlling (from the ego) expecting something. Have you tried to be in stillness of your mind and just observe what comes forward without judging it or controlling it. Just like you would observe people, animals, children. Observing and discovering what is, like a child starts to discover everything in the world for the first time, with being steered, without being conditioned, without any prejudice. If you have a hard time with it, observe small children and animals (especially cats). They are the best mindfulness teachers. Also a playlist of songs that inspire, relax, trigger you can help you on your journey and writing in a journal (asking questions and guidance). Take notice that it will be a lifetime journey full of discovering. Distractions are everywhere, they come in all shapes and forms. You have to be aware of them. The more time you spend exploring your inner world the easier it gets (but also harder).

The person is not who you are, it is what you identify with in any dream.
