It's more like 3 months is too short a period to establish whether or not a strategy actually works or not. The stock market on aggregate is volatile (randomly goes up or down a lot), with individual companies even more so. Over time this volatility cancels itself out, and your good companies will be reliably up and the bad ones down, but that is over the span of years, not months.

I did buy a few individual company stocks, with less good results. Diverse investments are better, if one company goes down, others go up. And unless something really horrible happens, or you panic sell, things will at least more or less even out
