I'm getting my first bible tomorrow!
Which one did you select?

RIGHT ON!
It's so easy to lose track of time reading the NLT, I almost always end up reading more than I anticipated 😅
As a very conservative Christian I usually stick with more literal translations, but I started reading the NLT just in my daily devotions and I admit it is now my favorite to read. I wouldn’t use it for study or teaching but I really enjoy it for my daily reading schedule.
My first language is not English but when I started reading NLT i stopped reading in my mother tongue
@millertime1202 same here
New Christian and certified nerd here. I am happy to report that I’ve generously contributed to this year’s list of Bible sales !
Haha… yeah!
My personal top picks in order are: ESV, NIV, NASB, CSB, NET. The NIV has a special place in my heart. I experienced conversion when I couldn't sleep one day and there happened to be a paperback NIV84 lying around. I picked it up out of curiosity, not knowing that the Holy Spirit was about to change me forever. Following this experience I began to read the Bible for the first time in my life and the NIV made it so much easier to grasp. I can't believe that was 21 years ago.
NET is underated imo
@@mrjustadude1Agree! NET is amazing and even better with the full notes
I am solely responsible for the CSB moving up to 5th place. I discovered it last year, and have bought a chronological, an ancient faith, 2 large print compact, 2 thinlines and a large print goatskin. My wife literally asked me to stop buying bibles.
My top 5 are NKJV, NASB, ESV, Berean, and Complete Jewish Study Bible
The NKJV would increase considerably its sales if they included editions with the Apocrypha. Many Catholics and Orthodox would love to have that option available.
I agree. I'd buy it as a catholic
I love the ESV but it's good to see the CSB continue to gain traction.
CSB definitely good for a first-time reader. ESV also for some others, but more word-for-word I’d say in comparison.
My Bible for the year is the NASB 2020 and I’m loving it. The CSB is still my favorite. I say New American Standard or I’ll spell it out N-A-S-B. I don’t normally say nasby
Same for me on all counts. I like the 2020's changes for clarity, though I sometimes use my 1995 for some readings. But New American Standard or spelling it out sounds way better and less nasally to me than Nasby.
Glad to see the NRSV back in the top ten. Really like that translation. Just wish there were some better NSRV premium bibles available.
Nrsv in the top 10 is good news!
I agree. It’s my personal favourite.
I agree. I wish for a NRSV PSQ, but it will never, ever sell well enough for Schuyler to make one.
@@toddheidenreich3866 Schuyler doing an nrsv would be amazing! It’s sad they won’t
@@toddheidenreich3866 I really want one, too, but I’ve also been told the NRSV is “too liberal” for EB to do.
I have the RSV from Schuyler. Don't like the NRSV
The kjv and esv are my favorite. I grew up reading kjv so I’m used to it. If I have trouble with a verse I will read it in esv and helps me.
I've always called it N-A-S-B, but Morris Proctor, who was the premier LOGOS software trainer, always called it NAS-B. I'll always think of him when I hear it said that way. Great video, Tim!
I commonly say the letters N-A-S-B and often add the year (77, 95 or 20).
That’s a great point about the pronunciation. Maybe ask the publishers? I would just spell out the NASB (NAS-by sounds like “nasty” 😂) and NRSVue (although an N-R-S-View sounds funny, too).
I’m also with you on a light NKJV update, mainly restoring some of the choices of the KJV, but also updating the textual notes. I’ve also fallen back in love with the KJV over the last year.
The ESV, NRSVue (woot!), NET, NLT, and KJV are probably my top five. ✌️🤓📚
I am older... 67 yrs old - in the 70's I used KJV and NASB then later the Living Bible - In the 1980's to 1996 I used the NIV84, then in 1996 the NLT came out - so 1996 until now I used the NLT (But I also used the TNIV and NIV2011 - I have & like the Thompson Chain NIV 2011 that Zondervan recently updated). Love your videos and updates. My church uses NKJV. At home I read & study with the NLT.
Thank you so much for sharing ❤️ Tim.
Great video Tim! Love seeing this list. I always refer to as the N-A-S-B. Glad to see The NLT hanging on to that number 4 spot!
I have always called it the N-A-S-B, it was only recently when I discovered Mark Ward's channel that.I found out people say "Nasby."
My favorite translation right now is NIV. It's easier to read and for some reason, I find it easier to memorize than the ESV or CSB, and It was my grandmother's primary bible when I was growing up so it makes me think of her. I have always loved the NKJV too.
My top 5 translations would be:
1. NIV
2. NKJV
3. NLT
4. NASB (I have always preferred it to the ESV)
5. RSV (basically I like that it keeps some old Elizabethan language when referring to God)
I cannot wait for your book, Tim!!
Thank you, Brother Tim 🌹🔥⭐
Thank you for this. I found it very interesting and helpful.
Love this video. Can’t wait for your book ❤
Thank you, Tim. This was really interesting.
I have been waiting for this video to come out!!!
Enjoy!
I always call it the N-A-S-B. Definitely cool to see the NRSV make the list and the KJV move back up. I'm loving my readthrough of the KJV so far, I thought I would struggle more. All the top sellers are sold at the local Walmart. Awesome update, can't wait for your book!!
GREAT VIDEO TIM !🦬🌲🌲
NASB, NIV are still my two top favs.
Thanks Tim
I'm excited for this video. It's going to be interesting. As always.
I have appreciated the NLT more this year after getting the book of psalms by alabaster. The NLT also helps when I don’t understand a verse in nkjv, nasb or niv
The only KJV I have purchased is the preorder for the new Humble Lamb Lion Refresh. Speaking of Humble Lamb, it's Friday and it should be time for their big SonRise announcement. Come on Humble Lamb, the SonRise happened. Good 🌄 Morning. Let us know!!!!!
Great information.
My top 5 are ESV, NKJV, NIV, NLT, and the NET. However, I have a CSB Study Bible arriving next week and am looking forward to reading the CSB for [most of] the remainder of the year.
I say Nasbee. And, I have a ‘95 in Black Pearl full yap on its way to me in Australia (it just left the Memphis hub!) right now! I have the LSB which is magnificent translation, so am looking forward to this NASB, heaps!
Tim,
Thanks!!! (for everything) I love your knowledge, help, experiance, and smile.
I am a red sea pedestrian who has recently found JC, and you've been a great help. Being over 55 it is quite an experience and I thank my wife (non Jewish) for opening my eyes and spirit. In the last month i have bought over 8 bibles and I think that I will be buying a premium one once I settle on a translation/format. Keep up the great work. KJV will always be my core, but for readability.... I am waiting on an ESV, and I can't wait to read all of the notes.
BTW, say each letter of NASB for the audio book. It is best for that, when conversing nasbee is ok and your choice.
It's encouraging to see so many Bibles still selling so well in the US. I wonder if there's a study or survey that correlates Bible sales with Bible reading. I'm aware of surveys like the State of Theology, which is very helpful, but they don't seem to correlate the two.
I always say it out N-A-S-B.
Also just got the Stridon Black Pearl NASB and I absolutely love it!
This year I
am using the CSB Day by Day Chronological Bible for my reading plan and my study bible this year is the NIV Cultural Background Study Bible as my devotional reference Bible. My Pastor uses mostly the NKJV which I enjoy.
I enjoy the NKJV, NIV, CSB, and NASB. I do not care for the ESV or NLT but will use them for a comparison reading
The Bible I have on my wish list is the Amplified Bible.
I enjoy your channel very much.
NKJV and NASB need more love!
NIV was my first bible. Still reading it regularly but I love the ESV as well.
Love the ESV.
I am currently reading the Bible through in the NKJV (I read the KJV last year). My Sunday School class uses the CSB, and my Pastor reads from the NASB. I have the NLT translation on my phone.
I will definitely buy your book. Would you please, please, please do one about Spanish Bibles?
I have spent the last couple years comparing translations and I have found I absolutly love the CSB
Great to see NRSV on the top 10 list. Such a great translation as it deserves to be heard more. Looking forward to having it premium up from Cambridge especially Pitt Minion!
Word. I am reading The Bible for the first time via the NRSV. The New Oxford Annotated NRSV is really invaluable for its extensive annotations and essays.
@@normanreviewsgames698 Good to know! Thanks. I don’t mind buying one but want to wait until they do updates with NRSVue as it came out recently.
NRSV, NAB, & The Jerusalem Bible are the ones I use
Awesome job
Thank you! Cheers!
N-A-S-B for me! I love the NIV, ESV, and NLT versions the best. Hey! How about Humble Lamb’s news? NLT coming! So excited!
Great content! My favorite Bible translations in order are:
1) CSB
2) NASB
3) NKJV
4) NLT
5) KJV
i would love to see videos on textual criticisms and textual variants within the manuscript tradition. that kind of thing is fascinating to me.
Got the NRSV update. Really like it.
Bishop Barron's Word on Fire Bible may explain the rise in sales of the NRSV.
Good point Father, several of my siblings who are Catholic have bought this Bible.
I heard a rumor that you might be working on a project for a translation...did I hear correctly?
@@mrjustadude1 There are two projects that have a loose connection to me. I have a deacon who is working on a fresh translation of the entire Bible, with the OT being from the LXX. The other one is an effort to get Michael Asser's revision of the KJV based on the Septuagint into a useable format that can be published.
N-A-S-B. Thanks for the video!
You bet!
Listening to your podcast I have learned of more recent versions. I would feel interested in some of them and go research and I usually come across more controversy than I felt comfortable with, so I ended deciding to stay with what I trust, NASB and KJV, My absolute favorite bible is not well known but I love the translation and I usually read it everyday. It's the Modern Language Bible, which is revised version of the Berkley Bible.
It was translated and published in 1959. I learned about it from a friend who would read his bible in the original texts. He recommended the Berkley Version, which I have been reading for years.
I always look forward to this list you do every year. ❤ I have always said N-A-S-B and the year published, myself. About the NKJV, here's my 2 cents. Leave well enough alone. There reason being is it sells. Other than the KJV, it's the only TR Bible that sells very well. The only one other TR Bible that I can think of that sells was the MEV (Modern English Version). There are so many forgotten TR Bibles that is so sad to see. Since the NKJV sells so well, I'm hoping that means more souls for Christ. And that should be the ultimate goal for every translation of the Bible in every language.
Always enjoy your content bro. Please don’t ever say Nasby 🤭. I did my part. Bought 3 ESV and 4 CSB Bibles last year. I blame you guys and your dang reviews! Top is still a tie ESV and CSB. Have you heard of the Cepher Bible? Saw a kid on reels talking about it. Blessings!
This is so interesting
My favorite Bible translation is NKJV....
My top 5
1.NKJV
2. CSB
3. KJV
4. AMPLIFIED
5. NLT
For more videos on Bible Translations how about a series of conversations with Mark Ward covering each one at a time?
Love the NLT 🕊🤍💛
I KNEW the NRSV wasn't ALL bad!!!!! 😁
The NIrV can be a great option for people who speak English as their second language.
Hey, that super giant print in the NKJV made my top list last year. I can see why the KJV was so popular!
I would be curious to get the demographics showing where all these sales are landing. Great video Tim. Any recent opinions on the LSB translation? I have studied from the KJV all of my life. I am more into a word for word type of translation and currently experimenting with the ESV, "Nasbee", and LSV.
Always letters N-A-S-B. Loving the 2020 also.
We say N-A-S-B.
My favorite is NLT, then NIV. Just got a CSB & looking forward to reading that too.
I've always said, and heard said, N-A-S-B (all spelled out). I would find "NAS-bee" extremely aggravating.
I kinda feel that way, too!
NAS-bee sounds very American and wouldn’t connect so much with an international audience.
I’m a big NIV, KJV, CSB fan.
I was surprised that the NRSV was *not* in the top 10 every year because the translation is such a staple in state college and state university New Testament classes. I think you are right regarding its No. 10 spot this year--that people wanted physical copies of the 1989 (I know I did) AND they were curious about the NRSVue.
Incidentally, in my head I think-say NASBy, but in person I always say NASB (lol). I've always been shocked and saddened that the NASB doesn't sell better. I'm happy to see the CSB doing so well, surprised that the NKJV is not doing so well (and, as I commented before, the MEV, Modern English Version, is a great inadvertent update to the NKJV--though I don't know what's going on with the production of it recently), and am ecstatic that the NLT is continually gaining ground.
I wish the NET (full notes edition) were more popular / sold better. I'm reading through the NET Bible Full Notes edition, Biblical Text and Notes, this year. What a treasure! I've never been a fan of the NIV and I'm still not (though I did like the TNIV--but that's another story for another day). Oddly enough, however, I do like the NIrV (as well as God's Word translation--which has been updated recently--and I recommend both of those translations for young readers and for those who find reading difficult). I did, though, first read through the entire Bible when I got saved in 1995 using the NIV 1984.
The ESV is a great translation and Crossway has been brilliant to offer such quality and good-looking and various styles, editions, etc. The ESV Preaching Bible, Black Goatskin Leather, is one of the most beautiful Bibles I've ever seen.
That the KJV still sells so well (and is still read and studied by so many) is, as you stated, a testament to its rightful place within our literary library of great English Bibles. I enjoyed this video immensely and can't wait to get your book! God bless.
Great thoughts... thanks for sharing!
NAS Bee sounds like a Japanese car company. “Hey, let show you my new 2024 NAS BEE.” Or one of the alien monsters that Godzilla fights. Coming soon to a theater near you “Godzilla vs NAS Bee.”
For many years I said, "N-A-S-B." But then I heard Dr. Mark Ward say, "Naz-bee," and I've been saying it that way ever since.
My own favourite bible is the N-A-S-B 1995. It's what I found in the hotel room last summer, and it's the one that did a way better job at sucking me in than my old NIV Study could from 2007; a church youth group gift from my parents. After trying multiple other translations, it's still the one that best resonates with my how my mind works. Many say it doesn't read smooth, but so far I'm up to Judges 17 and haven't seen anywhere that this has been noticeable.
My only wishes are that either zondervan would better (or actually) bolden the verse numbers for new paragraphs, or that other publishers might make an attractive thinline that fits in my carry case.
I used the 95 NASB for 20 years or so. These days I use the Legacy Standard Bible, which is essentially the 95 NASB only better. 🙂
I'm glad to see the KJV at #2 but I would prefer it to be #1. I can tell you, it will be hard to keep the classic translation down, that's for sure. I am excited for your book, Tim. Will the audiobook also be available on CD?
I say "N.A.S.B.", not "Nazzbee." If I've ever heard anybody say "Nazzbee" I don't remember it. It sounds much less articulate, and it's a reference to such a well-articulated translation!
I have many different translations…but my NIV is my favorite ❤️
Great video. I too would like to see the number of sales to see how close they are. Only wish more translations would upper case pronouns for Diety. Looking forward to checking out your book.
I’m 47 and the NIV is my go to (although I prefer the old 84 edition). I tried to go with the ESV at one point, but I just found it clunky to read.
I grew up on the NKJV and my current main Bible is the NAS95. Yet, a couple years back I bought a Schuyler RSV. After spending much time in it, I love the RSV. I love the Thees and Thous in reference to God. The Psalms are just a pleasure to read in the RSV. And, side note, I like to call the NASB the NAS, saying each letter - N. A. S. When I write it, I write NAS95.
Excellent video. I'm surprised that the NASB continues to stay so far down in the list. My Favs. are NKJV, NASB, KJV in that order. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing!
I wish there was parallel bible of the top 4
My fav is the niv
My top 5 are the CSB, NASB (95), ESV, NET, NLT
I believe people reverting back to the KJV is due to the instability in the USA right now. People will tend to revert back to something more stable and familiar.
When will we have an opportunity to pre-order your new book and will we have an option to buy one signed? Looking forward to this book!!
I’m working on all those details now n
I say N-A-S-B. I love all of these translations, but usually read NLT because I get up way too early for my brain to comprehend my NKJV! I own an Adventure Bible in NIV because it's a special polar edition and I couldn't resist the penguins and such.😅
Tim,
Thank you for this video, which gives me, as one who has followed Bible literacy, sales, usage, etc., for thirty years, the opportunity to comment on matters!
The ECPA sales are just that - a note of sales registered with them. They are, however, misleading, in at least two respects : 1. NIV’s are registered as sales in US, but are then sent and read abroad; and 2. KJV’s are produced and distributed by organisations not registering sales with ECPA and the Bibles sold or given away, and read, in US are not recorded in ECPA figures. The result is that the ECPA figures induce a false conclusion that NIV’s are widely read in US; and they also understate the reading in US of KJV’s.
Here are the ECPA statistics for the seven years from 2017 to 2023 inclusive : NIV 01 all years; KJV 02 2018 to 2021 and 2023, 05 2022 [absurd statistic, requiring verification and/or explanation]; ESV 04 2017 to 2021, 02 2022, 03 2023; NLT 02 2017, 03 2018 to 2022, 04 2033; CSB 06 2017-2021, 04 2022, 05 2023; RV Spanish 07 all years; NIrV 08 all years; NASB 10 2017 to. 2022, 09 2023; NRSV 09 2023, 10 2023; The Message 09 2017 to 2021.
These figures include versions - RV Spanish, NIrV, The Message - that barely, if at all, elicit response in surveys.
Let us concentrate on 2023.
The ECPA ranking is : NIV, KJV, ESV, NLT, CSB, NKJV, RV Spanish, NIrV, NASB, NRSV.
The Preferred Bibles among US General Readers are , with percentage share : KJV 21 + NKJV 18 ="KJV" 39 (as respondents often confuse or conflate or use both versions) + ESV 22 =TOP3 61 + NLT 15 =TOP4 76 + NIV 7 + CSB 10 + NASSB 3 + NRSV 2 + Others 2 + 100.
The Preferred Bibles among US Serious Students are, with percentage : KJV 30 + NKJV 14 = "KJV" 44 + ESV 22 = TOP3 66 + NLT 12 = TOP4 78 + NIV 7 + CSB 4 + NASB 4 + NRSV 4 + Others 3 =100.
These results show that only four versions dominate Bible readership, whether of the General Reader or of the Serious Student. Not surprisingly, no one - publisher, academic, ecclesiastic, etc. - is keen to discuss such results.
I could add a comment or two on Bible versions, literacy rates, etc. in US; but perhaps these can be made later.
When you record the audiobook, I suggest going with N A S B (In Aye Ess Bee). Because even people who have said Nahzz Bee for decades will know what you mean. But people who say N A S B may not understand Nahzz Bee. :) I think it sounds more "professional". Of course, you can always check out the audio bibles of the NASB and see what they say, or other audio books that talk about Bible translations.
Hi Tim, loved the video on Bible translations and really looking forward to your book. As to my preference I read the NKJV. For 25 years my primary Bible has been the New Geneva Study Bible. It is how the Reformation Study. I like it has the tone of the KJV. My current daily reader is a NKJV in goat that was your favorite until it go knocked from the #1 spot last year. Lastly where do I sign for the monthly donation to support.
Here’s the membership link: th-cam.com/channels/b6Tr0sc1VePlby-wQ-QlkA.htmljoin
My favorite is the ESV followed closely by the NKJV. They make great combo.
I am an NKJV user, but I do see it going out of the readers hands. I believe next year I will be switching to something else, but I don't know just yet. I like ESV, but I don't think it's any easier to understand than the NKJV. I used the HCSB growing up as teen so maybe that will be it!
I have the NRSV Harper Collins Study Bible - it's the translation that many critical scholars.
I spell the letters out for NASB
What was your conclusion about the ASV-1901?
The Adventure Bible (KJV) was my first study Bible. I'm now 40, and the first Bible I bought my kids was an "Adventure Bible" (NKJV). They now have ESV "Following Jesus Bible" but the "Adventure Bible" will always hold a special place in my heart.
I love the KJV and the choices it made, but the out of date language is always the kicker for me. Which is why I keep going back to the ESV. It reminds me very much of the KJV in the choices, but also simple, clear, easy to read and in the same category as the KJV in the spectrum of Word for Word > Thought for Thought
1) I always say N-A-S-B.
Also, I buy most of my Bibles from Christianbook.
2) Unless Christianbook declines sharing the data, their sale figures need to be taken into account.
3) I have a Christian Art Gifts or Christian Art Publisher Large Print KJV Study Bible (But it is really the same as the Reformation Heritage Study Bible). I picked the one with Art Nouveau design on the front and back covers. It is pretty - which is nice; but even more importantly it is Black Letter. Red Letter is pretty much a deal breaker for me. Not absolutely though!
They should never update the NKJV but instead make a new TR based translation in the same family.
Honestly, it's be cool to see a dynamic equivalent translation (or one that's in the middle) like the CSB or NIV, but using the Textus Receptus for the New Testament.
So...the MEV?
For consistency I would probably prefer N-A-S-B since you spell out the other translations.
I can’t wait to see this video.
