  • I decided to enter a YoYo challenge put out by Bruce from Jordan Woodwerx
    I made my with a vortex shape cut on my band saw cutting jig I designed.
    I think it is pretty cool looking and it was fun to do.
    Made from Padauk, Maple and Purple Heart
    Finished with Deft spray on lacquer and Acks sanding paste

      So many things are automated it is nice to have a machine where you get to create from scratch.
      Pattern making has been taken over but at least I was still getting the few drawings to build from.
      So the wood turning camp will be teaching them what true wood work is like.

    Yo-yo’s were one of my favourite toys as a child. Thank you for taking the time to make such a beautiful - and functional - one. You have brought back some happy memories for me.

    THANK YOU GARY!!!!! This is one of my favorite shows. ... I am late to the party with an early morning, all day hike. I like your bandsaw jig and your inventive ideas. I want to see more, more, more. I love it when toys are made or anything that is different and this one is EXCELLENT. I LOOK FORWARD TO ALL YOU HAVE TO OFFER😎 (now time for a long hot shower).... TM

    Very classy, Gary! Way to set the bar high. Not sure I'll have time to get to the challenge but I made a whirligig awhile back, which I thought might qualify. I learned a bit about what makes them effective from making the first one and really wanted to dye a second one so it would have the two toned (three?) effect. It's a fun project to watch so many fun ideas show up.

    With some of the difficulties I've had gluing up segmented projects, thanks for showing how you work with the segments to get them to hold shape while getting the tension on them. That is an interesting design for a jam-chuck. Nice looking yo-yo and you haven't forgotten how to use one. How is the shoulder doing?

    That's an awesome project! And now we all know how to make a yoyo. I think our challenge would be to get close to the beauty and craft of yours. That is fantastic, and another reason for us to make a sled like yours. Have you done a video on that bandsaw sled yet? I know you have featured it in a couple of videos. I think from those pictures I could almost make one. That is a really useful tool. Thanks for everything!

    Good evening, Gary.
    Absolutely perfect. I could say this project challenge had its ups and downs but someone beat me to it. Actually, it is very clever. The design any youngest would love to have. Operating a Yo-Yo is a skill you haven't forgotten. We all feel like kids again after watching your video. 🏆

    My grandkids would love this (me too). I've never seen a jam chuck like that before, with the notches for the hot glue...great idea! How's your shoulder coming along?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much Jim. I made a lot of mounting plates like this at work for large wood turnings that needed centered, Just a few places that you can turn round and it works great. But these were screed in place as those hole could be filled later. And they would be way to big and heavy for hot glue.
      Well shoulder is still the same but I start PT the end of this coming week.
      Thanks for asking and for watching,
      Gary

    I used to love playing with a yoyo. My brother and I would compete with one another and often at our local cinema during the Saturday matinee there would be yoyo and hula hoop contests! What a great job making yours. It looks beautiful, and sure seems to work well! Although you mention a simple turning ..... getting to the turning part is anything but 😃. Always a treat to see your process. Cheers, Rick

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much Rick. Just seemed to be what we all did back then, I had not really thought about a yoyo for years. Glad I saw this challenge.
      Maybe I should make some for the grandkids. Hard to say if they ever even saw one before.
      I sure had fun making it just waiting for the time when I got to try it out.
      Take care,

    ...wow!...that was a lotta work for a yo-yo...and it turned out amazing!...👍
    However, I noticed that due to the rounded shape, it seemed to lose the vortex illusion...I wonder if you had reversed each half, would it have enhanced the vortex illusion?
    Matt

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Matt. I actually thought about reversing the halves but went with this way,
      I wanted the points to be tangent to the inner circle for looks and also because it is so small even being off a little would show up.
