- When TJGE first posted this (bootleg from the audience) recording six or seven years ago it was big news because the sound quality was vastly improved to previous versions that had been shared by fans, and that was all thanks to Steve Gruber and Tom Garofalo. However, technology has advanced further since then and I was able to upgrade the sound quality even further. Hope you agree....and enjoy. Feel free to compare it to the earlier version we posted on TH-cam back in 2015. Here are the details from the original posting: "On November 17, 1968 Judy Garland made a surprise appearance at an ASCAP salute to Harold Arlen being held at NYC's Lincoln Center.
As soon as the orchestra started the intro to The Man That Got Away, Judy, who was hidden behind a flat, stuck out her hand, which was holding a microphone. Then, to the shock and delight of the attendees, she swung her body around and revealed herself to the audience. During the afternoon rehearsal Judy quipped "Can you imagine if they played that and Florence Henderson came out?" Judy also sang It's A New World from A Star Is Born, Get Happy from Summer Stock, and Over The Rainbow from The Wizard Of Oz. Judy is in great voice and spirits, and gives a relaxed and engaging performance. Huge thanks to Steven Gruber for sharing the recording he made almost forty six years ago, and grateful thanks to Tom Garofalo for his restoration work, which is beyond amazing and belongs in the realm of the magical. This recording, as presented here, when compared to the other versions out there, sounds like it comes from another dimension. One can distinctly hear the nuance and shading in Judy's voice, and what a pleasure to finally hear her in proper balance with the orchestra. A side note: I was introduced to Judy in 1961, only 13-years old, by my mother. I've had the pleasure of seeing Judy perform and appear five times, even stealing a kiss (on the cheek) as she strolled by my seat at a Seton Hall concert. For me, her last performance was at the Metropolitan in 1968. Once she got going and her voice came alive, the house was really jumping. For one of her closing numbers, "Swannee," she sang seated on the stage, legs crossed. When she got to the end, where she reaches for that high note, she raised her arm with fingers crossed (aware of her own limitations.) And, yes, she hits THAT note! The audience erupts into a standing ovation. It was magical. We ALL have our Judy stories. My saddest moment was queueing up in 90-degrees+ temperature to pay my respects at Campbell's in NYC. The outpouring of love that day is something I'll never forget. There was sadness but also a camaraderie among Judy's fans, sharing their favorite memories of Judy. Yes I remember how hot and humid it was that day in june. I was supposed to go in to NYC that day from long Island but my sister and a friend went instead.
I was somewhat shocked at wedding photos her and mickey deans in the NY times in march 1969. In the early 1970's
I used the same driver and limo service
She and mickey used when they were in nyc. Henry told some stories about them. Henry was mentioned in mel torme book the other side of the rainbow.

I did publicity for this benefit and we weren't allowed to promote the fact that Judy was in the show, in case she didn't show up. We tipped off Earl Wilson however, and I stood in the back with him as Judy made her triumphant entrance and he got the scoop!

How extraordinary are fate and serendipity to have arranged this last concert in America with the man who gave her these magical, timeless gems? This is a remarkable document, and a very moving experience.

You are mistaken. She was born in June 1922. This would have made here to be only 46.

Recordings like these should emphasize the fact that Judy was as good as ever near the end of her life. And that she did not deserve to be portrayed as a has been singer or someone who had lost her voice near the end of her life.
This recording is a year before she died. If she was ill and infirm near the time of her death, you wouldn't have known it by this recording a year before.
Judy Garland is a great artist who deserves, not only our respect and appreciation, but also deserves not to be taken advantage of by cheap cinema ripoffs.

A year later I have to add a word to my previous comment. Only months before she died, only Judy Garland could have pulled it together and sung so beautifully, especially “Over the Rainbow”. The audience LOVED it, obviously. Thank you again, Buzz!
Had never heard of this concert before. So glad it was recorded, she sound really good, and so late in her career that many mistakenly thought she had lost her voice.
Judy fly's Over The Rainbow with last note giving me chills, brilliant performance of Judy classics can feel the electricity from enraptured audience who were completely blown away as I am experiencing 54 years later, nobody will ever come close to the magic of Judy Garland who lives on through performances such as this magnificent once in a lifetime event.
Judy was in great form. She was not advertised to appear at this benefit honoring Harold Arlen. Judy was, at that time, hospitalized in New York. According to Johnny Meyer, In "Heartbreaker", Judy was given a leave of absence from the hospital to appear at this benefit. This shows how effective rest and regulation of her medications were. Judy had not lost her talent. She was in full control of her gifts. Thank you for sharing this wonderfully clear version of her fantastic performance. She brought down the house at Lincoln Center that night.
No doubt about it Judy Garland was the best is the best and always will be the best. I'm listening to her on my phone with just a face of her that's it and when she sings there isn't a sound in the audience a pin could drop cuz no one wants to miss a note when Judy Garlands sings. Yep folks I think she's been rediscovered all over again. But what do they say legends never die 💔
Many of Judy's "Hospitalizations" was a way of saying she needed help with rest, eating, and getting control over her intake of her medicines. It will always be a tragedy and shameful how the Puritanical American people viewed people who for what ever reason needed medicine to get through their day, and became addicted to what their doctors prescribed, and these same people who could not imagine maybe people who needed the help of medicine might have an illness, and whether it be physical, pscological, or genetic, and could not show any courtesy, compassion or kindness towards people who had difficulties such as these, and God forbid if someone every verbally talked about their difficulties they were shamed in the US. It was not till the 1980s and clinics like Betty Ford were founded and people came forward in record numbers both patients and doctors and worked very hard to change the image and perceptions toward addictions. And though all this Judy was so strong, that she had the Magical Power to Almost Always Rise Above the Difficulties and Shine with all of her Musical & Acting Brilliance.
@@craigslivka1 Greg that was well put and I'm assuming those words came from a brilliant mind. I rarely enjoy reading people's replies but I enjoyed yours immensely. The reason being I feel exactly the same way that you do. Back in those days addiction or alcoholism or other issues of that nature we're not addressed as a psychological as well as a medical problem if an addict even tried to withdraw on their own. There is no way Judy Garland could have done it on her own after years of abusing prescription drugs and alcoholism, so sad but true. It wasn't until people spoke up about it and brought attention to it thanks to Betty Ford who at one time was the president's wife of the United States brought it to mankind's attention. Even though Judy Garland was able to rise above and still shine on the stage in the end she was just a worn out damaged, sad and lonely drug addict and alcoholic who desperately needed the proper help that in those days just did not exist 💔💔 however thank God today there is so much awareness of addiction and alcoholism and the facilities to use and doctors to guide these people in the proper directions to free them of these demons drugs and alcohol and thus giving them a second chance at life ❤️🙏❤️ however considering Judy's situation and always in the limelight I give her so much credit for standing so strong for so long with that hidden secret and how really bad it was on her financially and emotionally and with regards to the breakup of her family thus losing her three children. Insomnia is a special kind of torture for anyone, but especially for someone like Judy Garland. To be alone, exhausted, and unable to sleep can be unbearable. I’ve read that she wasn’t an alcoholic; that she needed Benzedrine to wake up from her Seconal induced sleep, and it was the ever increasing doses of those 2 drugs that destroyed her health-drugs that were started by her own Mother when she was just a child, then continued by MGM so she could work 16 to 18 hours a day, then go into a Seconal induced sleep quickly, so she could be awakened after only 4 hours. I don’t think they knew the harm they were doing, but they didn’t care either, I suppose.
@@elizabethdacosta5601 thank you Elizabeth for that informative statement regarding the life of Judy Garland 🌈 and the misfortunes that occurred in her life which ultimately led to her death.💔 You seem very well informed about the beginning ,middle and the end of her drug addiction and alcoholism. 🌈🎥 I would therefore assume you are a Judy Garland 🌈 fan. Just like all the rest of her fans it was such a shame what happened to her as she was truly a gift from the heavens or maybe from somewhere over the rainbow 🌈🎥🌈 rip Judy 💔🌈

I was 11 when she died but loved her then and still love her and never tire of hearing these gems. Thank you for this gift. Never heard her sing A New World in a concert version. Wonderful. Her voice is great here. So sad to think she’d be gone in just months. The other thing I find so sad is that rather than focus on her amazing body of work - 40+ years of movies, recordings, television and concert appearances, so much of the recent focus was on the last few months of her life - eg the movie Judy (they should have used Judy’s singing which at her worst was better than Renee’s) and The End of the Rainbow. She was and remains one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived.

I saw "Judy" with Renee Zellweger channeling a sickly Judy just before her death in 22 June 1969; an excellent film. I prefer to see Judy as the healthy, vibrant, youthful entertainer immortalized on so many of her excellent films.

I was fortunate enough to see her in person twice, once in 1962 in Atlantic City and once at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.
was Greek Theater 9/13/65 was in front row right behind me Hayley Mills and George Hamilton in black tux looked amazing walking around up-front during intermissions' at 17 captivated by the experience

He saw her , easily, twenty plus times. He was at Carnegie Hall too.
Marvelous! But then, what else could it be? It's Judy Garland after all! For me, this dispells the myth of the tragic star, her voice in shreds, her star power in doubt. It's all here, folks. As grand and glorious as ever. Bravo, Judy!

Even though the decades of smoking has taken its toll on the Majestic Garland voice and sound, and Judy's frame of mind is not as sure of itself as she once was, with proper rest and food for the energy her voice, body, and mind required, Judy Garland can still easily show why she was/is/will be the best there is/was/will forever be. This was wonderful when I first heard it a few years ago, and the better clarity makes this Garland lover and scholar cry with joy at how even more wonderful Judy is/was/and forever will be.

Wow! What a gem..I agree with the comment by Elizabeth...post-MGM Judy is full of passion and emotion...near the end Judy is heartbreaking, as that amazing instrument shows the wear and tear inflicted upon it...but Judy's talent shines through once again.
The clouds are far behind her and what she left to all off us is her love ; her ability to remind ourselves when listening to her sing that we are human and capable of feeling all the emotions we tuck away to get through the work day,relationships that don’t work out, and that all 😮we really have is what we give our fellow man. We will only be remembered for the. Love we gave and Judy will never be forgotten for the love she gave us.

Judy LOVED to sing, to perform LIVE. That's WHAT set her apart from someone like STREISAND, who is Forever Complaining about singing in concert for an audience BUT does it for the $$$$$$. JUDY loved her audience!

What a wonderful recording. Kudos to all those who worked so hard to make it so clear and enjoyable. God bless Judy she never lost her talent, her voice, or her ability to entertain. You listen to this performance and you just get chills knowing that while her life may have been unsettled and her health failing her, here she is. The great entertainer who's gift for getting to the heart of a song and making it her own and making us all feel every joy and every sadness in each word was unmatched by anyone. After decades of listening to her work on film, radio, TV, concerts it is as much for me today as ever. She was simply the best and there's really nothing else to say!
I’ve not heard her sing A New World since I last saw “A Star is Born.” Not the best song written, but she could sing the old phone book and make it sound like it’s high art. Amazing! Thanks!

Thanks, Buzz, to you and all who made this version of the recording possible. You can feel the excitement in the room. Judy, of course, is indescribable. The band is terrific. You can hear them feeding off each other. And then himself at the piano . . . those two unmistakable Arlen chords at the end of the intro to Over The Rainbow. What a treasure!
She sounds great! And this was her last performance in the USA before her death???!? Fantastic...there goes the myth that she was in total decline shortly before her death.
Actually her last performance in the states took place in mid June, 1969. Judy Had flown to NYC from London in May and returned on June 16. The night before her return to London Judy sat in on an Anita O'day gig at the Half Note club in Greenwich Village and sang three songs, April Showers with O'Day, plus Day In Day Out and Over The Rainbow performed solo. This was not only Judy's last U.S. performance, but her last known performance anywhere.

I concur. It tears my heart to hear her struggle through songs, but this recording is amazing.
But she could lose her voice and only make croaking sounds, and STILL be better than the best. More than an electrifying singer, actress, or performer, she was simply MAGIC.

the early decline of Judy Garland robbed us of someone who could have done incredible things for decades more.
She suffered that loss but so did the world - and all because no-one was willing to take better care of her

There are always choices we are offered by those who do not have our interests at heart.
We have to summon the insight and inner strength to fend for ourselves.
It's painful and difficult... sometimes impossible.. but it is our responsibility, not someone else's.
You are right sadly Judy had some around her that were takers of the cash cow they milked dry leaving her in the end broke, indeed very sad nobody stepped up to help yet many of those close to her had lots of money...
@@bradly2007Margaret Hamilton tried to stand up for Judy. She even went to Louis Meyer. At the time of her death,, Judy also had advanced liver disease, so she probably wouldn't have lived to her 60s. 😔

I discovered Judy after she was long gone. There were no official LPs available (that I could find) between Carnegie Hall and At the Palace. She is in shaky voice during the latter, at least the performance they recorded for posterity. At the time, I assumed that between '61 & '67, her voice was shot. (The TV series was unavailable). So it's a pleasure to hear her in such command this late in her career. On nights when she was having vocal problems, she had to go on regardless. It's a shame whatever record label (Capital?) released "Palace" didn't opt to re-record on another night. A Judy concert was not something she could walk through...in contrast to someone like Peggy Lee whose style in much easier on the throat. (not knocking Peg). Was this her final US concert appearance?

The official orchestra for Lincoln Center is the New York Philharmonic, but I don't know if they were playing that night. I do know that Judy's warm up pianist for the event was Richard Rodgers. Yes, THAT Richard Rodgers. So who knows, maybe it actually was the Philharmonic playing behind Judy. At the time Leonard Bernstein was still their conductor, and he and Judy were close, so.....
@@BuzzStephens1 and having both Mr. Rogers and Mr. Bernstein in her musical corner and assistance most have been psycological helpful for Judy, and Judy's sense of Musicality always reached Brilliance levels when she felt she had the best either assisting or opposite her performing.
