- Upgraded version of Judy Garland's concert segment form the first of her two appearances on The Sammy Davis Show. This mini concert was taped on February 27, 1966. Judy was suffering from a very severe case of laryngitis and had absolutely no voice, despite this the quality of her performance was so great she won the audience over with her first song, and their exuberant reaction to Judy's entire performance is just one shade away from pandemonium. Judy sings Whe You're Smiling, The Man That Got Away, and Give My Regards To Broadway.
Even hoarse this lady out-sings any of us who dare to sing... She was the best female singer of ANY time.
When she appeared at the West Bury theater on Long Island, I kissed her.
My claim to fame.
So did I. I got to go into the green room after the concert, and actually sat at her feet for (probably) 15 minutes. I couldn't believe it .. I was literally sitting at the feet of Judy Garland! She treated me like royalty, and I still don't know why. (She told me I was "MARVELOUS"! I should have died right then and there It's all been downhill since.
The fact that she had laryngitis here, and that it was after the Hong Kong stomach pump which damaged her voice, shows that she was truly one of the greatest performers in modern history, perhaps of all time.

When she signaled the camera to follow her, she had some audience members standing up applauding! When she sang, Judy Garland took her fans along for the ride! RIP Judy! We miss you!

Angela Fischetti Yes, she seemed to be able to soar with the high notes but struggle with the low ones. Just when you though she might not make the high ones she nails it.

This is one of my favorite "Judy" moments when she rips into the second chorus of Give My Regards to Broadway ..the audience goes wild ..her sheer force of electricity she projects is so evident here and she just turns the audience to a frenzy ...there was and will never be another person like her ....she was simply and will always be the best in the business for all time . I miss her everyday even after all these years .

Is it me? Why do I feel and sense an angelic auric pure whitish and pink (even in black and white TV) light around Judy. Even with laryngitis, the electric energy of this woman's voice, combined with her expressive hands, face, and dancer's body is a kinetic force! I've watched a lot of Judy's performances, but this one seems special. You can't take your eyes off of her in that sequined white gown with the sexy side slit showing her stylish legs. Yes Judy, I will keep smiling, even in 2020 when the COVID-19 coronavirus threatens our existence and racial violence looms, I will keep smiling and offer compassion and love when I can...just like you. I love it when Judy's wry sense of humour pops up as she talk sings about being handed a sopenea. Her signature song from A Star is Born "The Man That Got Away" is different from the movie. Her phrasing is more artfully sing acting here due to laryngitis. But she really belts out that last line of "the man that got away" with such a dramatic flair and coquettish tilt of her head. That bluesy mournful awaaaaay hooks her audience up with soul. Then, by God, you see her move that body so gracefully and sing to Broadway. Work it, Judy, work it girlfriend.

Singing songs with laryngitis withouta net must have frightened her but her energy shines through. She worked constantly to work to sing for her supper. She’s a. Trouper .
Mesmerizing. She stretched the boundaries of expressive human emotion into realms unknown by the vast majority of souls on this earth.

That's what a jazz singer is - she performed, didn't merely sing. She bent TMTGA phrases and adjusted her usual emphasis on certain words in exchange for putting the drama in spots where belting with the part of her voice she could made sense. When your chords are raw, one can still sing high & loud because you're forcing full breath, She then artfully spoke the parts that usually would be sung softly as you can't hold steady notes without pushing air hard as when you have no voice. But she could always belt high and loud no matter how bad her vocal chords till her last performance on earth. I find it funny that no one ever mentions recordings from '65 on like this were after the infamous vocal chord damaging stomach pumping in Hong Kong. It changed her voice forever but it didn't stop her. Supposedly that's when she started studying with coaches for the first time in her life to learn how to use what she had to her best. This is an artist the likes of which no generation will ever again see alive. If you can't act, you can't sing - She could do both better than anyone. Listen to Billie Holiday's last two albums & hear what great acting does added to jazz chops. Different type of jazz but if it ain't straight by the page singing - it's jazz all the same. Two legends who gave some of their most moving performances with a fraction of their prime vocal powers. Interesting stuff. Thanks Buzz

Gemminicus Thanks for the interesting appraisal of Garland’s technique. She seemed to instinctively know the limitations of her range with the effects of laryngitis and the damage to her vocal chords, and adjusted accordingly.
God, she looks great here. Aside from the great performance, as always.
I was at the taping. The start was late and Sammy entertained the studio audience for about an hour.
We forget that entertainers can't just "call in sick" ... this is such a good performance despite the fact she was sick! and NINE + MINUTES to boot!!!
Judy looking magnificent sore throat and all manages to give stunning performances of her classics, lets it rip with "Give My Regards To Broadway" wows audience with fabulous strut showing how its done, never again will any come close to her greatness

Seems like members of the Judy Garland fan club were in the audience. Maybe that's who Sammy was pointing to before she tore down the house with her rendition of "Give my regards to Broadway."
Judy was a great entertainer who really connected with her audience...really in evidence here. Her "Give My Regards to Broadway" is fantastic!

JUDY GARLAND was always a must hear Singer, and as time went by JUDY got better an better she never let her audience down. Thanks to T.V. and recordings her one of a kind singing talent is captured for all to hear and with the internet JUDY is there to hear and see what a singing sensation is. NO ONE DOES IT BETTER THAN JUDY GARLAND
It's fascinating how she uses that mic as if it's not even hot. Do you think it was just a prop and there was a boom mic following her? That period of time was problematic for her and her recordings of that era and sometimes tough to listen to. All that aside, she was the greatest singer of the 20th century.

Idk how she was able to sing a note! When I had laryngitis, I couldn't make any audible noise for nearly 2 weeks no matter how hard I tried, unless it were the lowest notes I had!

I had to watch this clip in segments because I felt so sad for how hard she worked when she quite clearly should not be working. She should have been in bed with a warm drink. If you're sick you're sick. How it must have hurt to belt out those notes. No one should have to work under those conditions. So many people adored her but where was that one person saying, Sorry, we're rescheduling. Instead, she had to possibly damage her voice so everyone could be paid, once again. But she was used to it because: mommy dearest.

Judy, We miss you so much! I’m so so lucky to have seen you create your magic on stage and in person so many times,so many years ago. And I will never forget the one time when at one concert
when we all rushed to the edge of the stage and as she took her bows she reached down and softly stroked my cheek as she crossed the stage. WOW! What a night.

At this stage of her life, the medications she had been taking a toll on her voice. They dried her voice out. I'm sure if she had laryngitis because people with this condition are not able to even speak. She seems to get better the more she gets warmed up.

As she held her mike in her left hand to open, I briefly thought perhaps I was about to see an impressionist.
Beyond the laryngitis and the mic, she just seems ‘off’ to me here. I love her performance, nonetheless.... 🌼

I can't figure out how Judy is taller than Sammy. She's 4'11" and he's 5'4". Her heels are clearly not 5", yet she looks at least an inch taller.

@@08davey I'm pretty sure they are. In fact, she famously wore six inch heels from 1961 until 1967.

Poor unfortunate woman. For a singer, a case of laryngitis needs to be carefully looked after, not more strain. If only they could have been more decent towards her, but these people only wanted their money's worth. Cruel.
