    Such a beautiful song, and she looks so well here! I have no idea why this isn't our national anthem--the words are stirring and evocative of the promise of America and her highest ideals. The Star Spangled Banner is just....hey where's our flag? is it there? FREEEEEEEEEEEE

    Oh my God: I have never heard anyone sing this song with more passion. She doesn't just sing a song.....she becomes the song !! Judy offers the best rendition of this song EVER !

    To compare Judy Garland with any other singer is just ridiculous because Judy Garland is and will ALWAYS be, incomparable! ❤️

    The greatest voice of all time. When they elect the Presidents, they should have Judy's performance of this song broadcast on a big television screen because no other singer can deliver this song in the way Judy can. She has a magical and hypnotic force behind the voice that just reels you in from the first note to the last. This is how you sing a song with an emotional power. She is forever the greatest entertainer of all time.

    This should be our national anthem...not a song about war that is difficult to sing. Bravo Judy..you "nailed" it !! Thought I made a previous comment...excuse me I am a 70 year old homeless person..

      I too have always thought that this simpler and more straightforward song should have been our national anthem .
      It seems so obvious to me . Such a timeless melody with equally timeless lyrics ….

    what people tend to forget is that Liza acts the songs with her long loud voice (forgot who described Liza's voice like that) Judy Garland does not act a song, she embodies a song, heart, mind, body, soul, spirit, and thru every fibre of her being capable at the moment. Also very few people had the natural talent, breeding, and training that Judy did. Imagine a young amazingly talented child who has a father who owns a movie theatre, where you would sit and soak up everything there is about movies in the 1920/1930s, then couple that with all those crazy and hilarious acts like Happy Harry the most depressed comedian (which Judy being Judy, always juiced up a story to give it more flavors and laughs), then to be signed to metro during the mid 1930, and was able to mingle with the stars of the day, and soak up all that wit, and finally to be trained and stimulated by people like Roger Edens, Vincent Minnelli, and Chuck Walters, and so many others. Frances Gum's brilliant innate prodigal talent soaked all this up, and created Judy Garland, she was, is, and will always be so magnificent, the top of the line, and the standard for which a gold bar in performing standards should be the model. Liza did pretty well with the gifts she did receive, and had developed them and used them in a very resourceful and entertaining manner. Listen to Liza tell a story, she flounders in an almost Johnny One Note sort of a way, so she sticks simply entertaining. All three Garland kids love to laugh (a wonderful trademark), but do not have their mom's witty, crazy, mind like a fast steel trap, sense of humor. Peggy Lee once said something like, when Judy was not performing well, she was head and shoulder above most, and when she was, there was not a performer who could touch her.

      I totally agree and even Liza said she didn't have as good a voice as her mother and added that no one sang as well as her mother; even the great Streisand recently said that Barbra herself has a very very good voice, but that Judy had a great voice, and I wouldn't argue with Barbra Streisand's opinion.

    She never went for a high belt, why not, surely she could find a higher range, or was it just not fashionable or seen as appropriate. I love the power in her voice, in her range, with the vibrato, it is immense, I just wish she'd have gone upscale on occasion.

    • @TombCat
      @TombCat ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Judy was a contralto, so her range is lower. But yes, she seldom used her head voice or a mixed belt. Eydie Gorme and Streisand did, but most female singers were more low key in those days. You seldom heard all that their voices could do. People wanted that richness that only Garland's full throttle voice provided. She does hit a C5 at the end of What Now My love and By Myself has a run of building high notes, ending in a sustained belt. The soundtrack version of Born in a Trunk has the most gorgeous high note that Garland ever sang.....in pocatello Iiiii Daaahh HOOooooo. It's very high and pure, her vibrato spins those last three syllables off into outer space. The ring of her voice is unmatched by any popular singer. (Whitney comes very close, Aretha and Celine had some too:) The resonance of vocal production is called the ring of a voice. It's like church bells or cymbals. You feel in in the pit of your stomach and the voice literally RINGS!
      Garland's recorded version of Danny Boy also has a gorgeous climatic note where you'd expect it. Judy was known for her thrilling crescendos - heard here and in many of her songs. No one has that grand swell to their voice from an already full sound that opens to something even more profoundly powerful and resonant. Listen to As Long as He Needs Me or the thrilling last lines of Old Man River or her Carnegie Hall version of Stormy Weather.....It's like her jaw unhinges and the most gorgeous and powerful sound comes forth to shatter your reality. It's not all about high notes.

    • @markdrinkwater1508
      @markdrinkwater1508 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TombCat No I realise that, of course not, much of Aretha's beauty is in her lower register, she can milk you without having to barely go from and A to a B..
      I must say that much of what you describe in relation to Judy can be attributed to Aretha who for me had the greatest voice in recording history. But I will most definitely listen to the Judy tracks that you mention. By the way it is documented and I have read it - that Aretha once said that Garland was the most soulful singer she ever heard, because that was it, their unique ability to emote through song in a way that leaves the others trailing in their wake.

      She had recently finished singing one of her classic songs, A Couple of Swells from Easter Parade… a hobo song/dance act she did with Fred Astaire (but did solo on this particular episode of her television show). She always blacks out one of her teeth for the song and prior to singing America the Beautiful Mort Lindsey, her conductor, was helping her wipe the black off her teeth. The entire show is great, it’s on TH-cam as shown number 21 or 22 I think, of her 26 episode show from 1963. I love how Judy could be beautiful and glamorous could be but had no trouble looking messy and tossled, even when reverently singing one of our nation’s national anthems.
