Actually the more one plays this amazing Cole Porter Tribute the better it becomes, remember watching it LIVE and loving how sophisticated and amazing Judy looked & sounded, at the end she nails "Night And Day" and throughout never misses a beat...don't know how anyone who loves Judy & Cole could not love it!

My God ----- it's hard to imagine it's been almost fifty-five years ago, and we still realize we are watching the greatest entertainer who ever lived. When Judy flips her microphone cord and goes from one high-note explosive song right into another, it is pure magic. I thought watching it on TV then (yeah, I'm OLD :-) ) and still do today that the medley sort of (BRIEFLY) falls apart when she starts in with "Let's Do It" and the rather odd "Don't Fence Me In," but she's handling those numbers as best she can, with a little humor that definitely isn't required for the dramatic, blockbuster Porter numbers. It's not even that they are BAD songs, but just that the medley itself, and the proof of Garland's incredibly strong vocal power, could have easily done WITHOUT them!

She’s carrying more weight than she liked and whoever put her in that ensemble should have been shot at sunrise. She seems a little dulled, tired maybe, or the drugs weren’t quite right, but she kept track of every change and hit every note.
Still, Judy is Judy and we are all luckier that she ever existed at all.

This is fabulous ...i also was amazed the first time i saw this as i had read in countless biographies how "dreadful" it was ...nothing could be further from the truth ...it is breathtaking and Judy is lovely and fabulous ..yes the voice is slightly uneven occasionally ..but the ending is amazing and thrilling ..and thats the whole point . Frank Sinatra and many great entertainers have slight changes in their vocal abilities ...we didn't care..it was thrilling to see them and be entertained by them because we loved them . Judy was beloved by millions especially her fans ...we were just thrilled to be in her presence and to hear and see her ....her loss and untimely passing left a void in entertainment that was never replaced or filled and is still painful for the many who adored her . This performance gets better every time you watch it ! Thankyou for posting

At 6:46, she moves her hand to her side and bends back just slightly. Look at the placement of her hand and how she’s gripping and that she did it right before a belt. In a video of her singing technique, one of the panelists said what she’s quite possibly doing is lifting her rib cage to allow more air into her lungs. Not being a singer, I didn’t know they had little tricks like this. Really cool.

Judy was just recuperating from the loss of her own CBS TV show. Got tribute to her great friend Cole Porter, being introduced by her another great friend and co-star Gene Kelly, arrangement classy and classical by her another huge friend Roger Edens who was instrumental for the development of young Judy personality and her vocal abilities way back at the beginning of her career in MGM in 1935. His arrangements were subtle and gave Judy opportunity to show her voice range and soulful interpretations sophisticated and wonderful as they were an Roger gave her appropriate delicate legato in the instrumental arrangements/ orchestrations. She could sing and often sang a capella in 1930's and early 1940's. The orchestra was just an almost not-existent echo of her brilliant vocal performances...

Judy Garland was and will always be the World’s Greatest Entertainer of her generation and for always! No one had or has her mix of unparalleled talent and heart and artistry and a voice that will never be equaled! I have been an ardent fan of hers since my youth. My mother, who was a professional singer for over 40 years had the great opportunity to sing for Miss Garland. I was six when Judy died, and I still remember where I was when it happened.
I feel somewhat defrauded, as I have read in various books the account that this particular performance at the Academy Awards was a train wreck, and nothing could be further from the truth! Granted, she arguably had better performances, and her voice may not have been in peak form, but it was still an outstanding performance with her typical socko finish that leaves you wanting more! Shame on whoever promoted the notion that this performance was terrible. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am sure that Judy is entertaining and touching hearts on the other side! God bless you Judy! Your gifts that you so generously shared with the world for 45 of your 47 years of life, still continue to enthrall and bless the lives of young and old alike, and always will! As Frank Sinatra so aptly put it...,”We will all be forgotten, but never Judy!” Truer words have not been spoken!

Judy Garland is still the greatest singer and entertainer the world has ever known but she was human. She was singing live and natural and no one can always sound perfect for every live performance. She owned every stage she walked onto and if she just read the entire NYC telephone book, she’d bring down the house! Everyone in that audience would give their eye teeth to have an ounce of this great legend’s talent! She endures even after almost 50 years after her passing, because her talent and voice, is totally unmatched! Thank you God for giving us Judy Garland!

I also read many a scathing critique of this performance. If anything it seems the sound system couldn't quite deal with Judy's powerful voice. She did justice to a very long, complex and wordy medley, and she looked like a million dollars even if she didn't have the vocal nuance of her best years... but hey, hadn't she had a stellar career by the time she did this?? It's a fitting tribute to Porter but even more so a moment for Judy to shine for a crowd that failed to reward her for her best screen performance.

I agree. There was too much treble on the microphone, and it didn't pick up the lower partials of her voice. Difficult, poorly constructed arrangement, but she sings the hell out of it. She looks great.

VERY interesting to SEE the performances I had only HEARD before from many years ago. Thanks to the internet!!!!

@@jimrick6632 Sure.... They were airing color... sadly enough they didn't recorded the show on tape in color. Most of the TV material even of CBS or NBC TV channels got lost entirely or been recorded privately by people on their low-quality tape recorders at home. Never mind... Judy brought down the house as usual. Divine, classy and amazing talent...

This is our Judy Garland. The sound quality on this is terrible, but Judy is terrific. I too have heard that this was a bad performance by Judy. I had even heard that Johnny Green who was conducting the orchestra had tears in his eyes because Judy was not the same Judy Garland of old. Well who in the Hell is? No I think Judy was okay for this type of an arrangement. We're lucky to have this on our TH-cam.

an interesting note, even though Roger put together this medly (I'm assuming the arrangement as well) the musical arrangement does not quite gell with Judy's voice at this time in her life. Even though Roger was always arranging songs for Judy after Metro during the 1950s and early 1960. The last time he put together a medly for Judy was ASIB with Born in a Trunk. Roger was very proud of what Mort (Lindsey) did for Judy in her show with all those amazing arrangements on the fly, that I think it would have been better if Roger ask Mort to arrange the orchestrations of the medly. As much as Judy struggles to make this medly work (I think she was wonderful here, a little wobbley physically, but vocally and acting wise she was fine) Mort could have arranged something brilliant for Judy to sing at this time in her life.

  • @craigslivka1
    @craigslivka1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

part of the problem which has little to do with judy, was the very static staging, to have a director or choreographer giving her, why don't you try this, or try that, or cross here, or you did this step in so and so musical, it would look great here. also the other problem is the camera, they are trying to shoot her like she was at metro, for some of this, and some of the closeups look exquisite, and her facial expressions as beautiful as always, but the camera seems static, and many time shoots Judy from above making a tiny woman seem very small, as opposed to on her show, instead of birds eye view camera shots, they used worms eye view camera angles, and they gave judy a very glamorous adult look. Some of Roger's medly works, and some of it seems haphazard. I think Judy's medly with Merman from her tv show, and doing it with Ethel, would had given the medly pretty much what every one would have liked to have seen. there were too many components of this medly that was not as complete as they (camera angles, staging, medly arrangement etc) could have been, but as always Madame Gumm was up there singing her heart out.

I had hoped 'remastered' might mean that the original had been at the wrong speed, but apparently not. How could Roger Edens have done this to her? It's all too slow, and all in a bad key for her. Having been her lifelong vocal coach, t's almost as if he'd written it for the 13 year old voice, not the mature one. She pulls it off, and does some very impressive vocalizing, but it's harsh and strident -- and NOT her fault.

I agree her performance was fine. The Porter medley was awfully written. Whoever put this medley of songs together was none too subtle. The writer musically chopped them with a cleaver. Porter's wonderful songs were cut to ribbons and cut and crafted together in an odd way. There was no natural melodic flow. The medley did not highlight these wonderful songs. Who the hell could sing that mess of a medley? It was rotten.

See, her weight is up. That's good. She was off the uppers and booze. But the powers in Hollywood, who wanted her to clean up, saw hre a bit heavy and didn't want her so she went back on. The rest of the 60s were a mess and led to her death. Poor Judy. Used. A victim.
