    INFO: Sleep is an American doom metal / stoner rock trio from San Jose, California. The band has often been talked about as one of the more influential bands in those genres in addition to acts like Kyuss, High on Fire and Om. They were founded in 1990 then broke up by the end of the decade but got back together in 2009 and have been active ever since. Now what makes Sleep such a unique band to a lot of fans is their 1999 released third album Jerusalem and the altered and slightly more popular version of this album known as Dopesmoker released in 2003. It’s an album consisting of one song lasting over 50 minutes. Some versions lasting over an hour. On top of that, the song is also quite monotonous. Guitarist Matt Pike repeats the same notes and melodic patterns over and over. When i describe it it might come off as boring. So why is this album regarded as a stoner rock cornerstone? That’s the question i’ll answer in this video.

    I used to double Dopesmoker as a 1 hour timer when I was cleaning carpets. Combining the repetition of the song and body movements I often would slip deep into my thoughts in a meditative way. >same melodic pattern over and over
    Why does everyone say Dopesmoker is the same riff on repeat, did you guys never listen to it? There are about 10 different riffs and 3 long solo sections, if you made the riffs 8 secs long instead of 2 minutes you'd get a pretty orthodox stoner metal song.

    • @dangramful
      @dangramful 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Seriously, I couldn't agree more. When he said "monotonous", I'm like what? There are so many changes in the main riff. Sounds like this guy listened to it once, NOT stoned.

    • @Phlinn96
      @Phlinn96 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@dangramful Saying that it's monotonous is completely fair, it has the same tempo, basic structure and pace throughout the entire piece and 10 different riffs and 3 solo sections is really not too much when you're talking about a song that's about an hour long. Also, monotonous is not in any way a negative thing to say, dopesmoker is great, and part of what makes the song great is how droning, dreary and monotonous it is.

    Jerusalem was the working title hence why it had different parts and then final product was called Dopesmoker which originally had the crazy looking horse on the front. The newer artwork with the gas masks are actually bongs/vaporizers you wear on the back and the mask is the hit piece. They are worn by the Hasheashians/lungsmen (presumably). They are monks transporting bails of weed across the holy land i.e. Jerusalem.

    Wow the way I understood it was totally different from this story. I heard they presented London with the one song and they said no way so Sleep basically disbanded. The label tried cutting the one long song up with fade ins and outs and called it Jerusalem in an effort to get back some money. Then the full original song was finally released under the original name of Dopesmoker.

    2:46 It's important to realise Dopesmoker is NOT the same melodic pattern all the way through. While the note C does appear much more often than any other note, there are easily enough riffs in the song to fill an album and keep it interesting. They even printed a list of the named riffs on the vinyl inner sleeve.

    • @drpibisback7680
      @drpibisback7680 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some riffs (like the first one) are very long, taking over a minute to play, which certainly leads to the listener getting disorientated.
      With your first comment, I think I see what you mean, although calling a 63 minute metal track with so many riffs minimalist could be a bit of a stretch. :D

      @czgibson3086 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@drpibisback7680 I think you see Dopesmoker as being much more homogenous than I do. In other words, the riffs are much more than slight variations of each other. For example, the Cultivator riff (around 43 minutes in) is very different from the Departure riff (the first one). These differences become more noticeable the more you listen to it. However, the riffs still sound like they belong together, and it still sounds like one big song rather than several different songs shoved together, so maybe I'm just splitting hairs! I like the fact that the song provokes these contradictory thoughts - just more evidence that this is one of the great masterpieces of rock music.

    I don't know if someone already mentioned, but the religious use of Cannabis specifically dates back to at least 2.000 years in India, where it was consumed as an offering to the deity Shiva, with very elaborate rituals followed by fasting and meditation. Cannabis is mentioned in several sacred scriptures from Hindu philosophy. Not to mention Rastafari, which is a very serious religion in some parts of the world in which the consumption of the plant is a central spiritual practice. I don't know if Sleep was drawing some inspiration from those traditions, but yeah, just to mention that they were not (entirely lol) tripping when they came with that concept.

The band had not even been together 4 years when the song was recorded. Im not sure where you got your information? The song was created in the studio and is a product of the studio.

    Not quite Star wars indeed
    If we look closer to the lyrics we can see, that Sleep are big fans of Dune, great book by Frank Herbert. There are lots of Easter eggs and the 2012 dopesmoker cover is one of them. Because, you know, Arrakis is a desert planet, having 2 satellites and literally have deserts of drugs
    For me that is mindblowing, that one masterpiece of sci-fi literature in some way created other masterpiece of music

    I heard a relatively recent interview with Pike where he said that he spent a lot of time on creating the perfect guitar sound/tone. He eventually got it but by that time several months had past. He did the song over those 2 years but because of the whole legal battle over the album he didn't get to keep the pedals & equipment used in creating the guitar sound so it was essentially a lost sound now. He said he's been chasing that sound ever since and he can get close to it but never identical to it.

    Great video. About the title ‘Jerusalem’. My guess it doesnt necessary have to do with the Middle East, but more with ‘Holy Land’. Just like Holy Mountain, this one is about a dopecaravan to...: Nazareth (see: lyrics), which is just like Jerusalem a place in the Holy Land. It isnt necassary Jewsish (both are Israel and Biblical places); i think they use it as a metafore for ‘holy place or land’. Or just maybe it sounded a bit more safe than f.e.: Mekka 😂
