This is a great discussion and, to the best of my knowledge, the philosophy is on point. I hate to be “that guy,” but a minor historical quibble-Spinoza was not put to death, but is thought to have died from a lung disease brought on by grinding lenses and inhaling the particulates. He was excommunicated from the Jewish faith, however, and quite the pariah in his time. One cannot be expected to get every detail perfect when working through such a wealth of material-nearly the entire history of western philosophy! Otherwise, this is a great discussion of Deleuze. I’m looking forward to part three. Thanks for all the hard work you’ve put into it!
it's quite weird, because in the episode #33, steve actually says that Spinoza died because of a lun disease caused by lenses.
Maybe he meant it metaphorically, spinoza being put under "cherem", ie banishment, by the Jewish community for his heretical ideas.
When he said "put to death" it's not meant literally

I always thought the novels of Stanislaw Lem best demonstrate what Deleuze actually means by immanence as opposed to transcendence and "palpating the unknowable". Something like this is exactly what happens at the end of Solaris.

Deleuze is basically the modern Nietzsche. The more I learn about him (Deleuze) the more I really really like him. Admittingly, I love Nietzsche, so...

Chris Vitale in his blog at Networkologies points out how Spinoza's philosophy was based on Maimonades, which in turn borrowed from Andalusian philosophers. Immanence has been there long before Spinoza's.

Was spinoza really put to death? I was under the impression he died from a lung infection from working as a lens grinder.

Spinoza was excommunicated not put to death. Spinoza's health began to fail in 1676, and he died on 21 February 1677 at the age of 44. His premature death was said to be due to lung illness...

Spinoza was not "put to death in his time". He died a natural death, though it was probably precipitated by all the glass dust he inhaled as an optical lens grinder. Like your stuff so far.

Spinoza's idea about God being all one substance is interesting to me; it reminds me of the reconstructed proto-Indo-European myth about a cosmic cow who raised twin gods being sacrificed to create the earth. In other words, the physical earth is literally constituted by a divine being. This theme shows up again in places like Hinduism, and... It just seems to me that Spinoza echoed a very old idea in more literal terms. I think there may be something to it. On the other hand, dualism is a very common idea in world religions and... Well, I think it comes from the idea that no concept makes sense experiences make no sense without their opposite: heat makes no sense without cold. But, as per Derrida, it's not so much that these are two separate things, but each idea always already contained the other. Which makes me think of the black and white symbol for Taoism. I actually don't think of consciousness as any kind of substance at all, neither as a product of substance nor basic substance in its own right; I think perception (or at least its potential) is something so basic it can't be broken down any further, and... I mean, I had the thought that, if empty space exists, isn't it just as likely to be aware as not? Basically I believe the material constitutes at least one kind of experience. On the other hand, this idea would seem to go back to dualistic thinking, and I don't know how to reconcile that. On the other hand, what are our options? I feel like mainstream modern society has just flipped the binary, framing the subjective as secondary to the physical. On the other hand, there's Whitehead, who seemed to be saying that will is the driving force of the universe, not separate from physical forces but just the subjective, internal side of physical forces. I feel like... I think about how light behaves differently in water, but it's still light. Or rather, maybe you can't separate the two, but in any case, there are still things that generally hold true for light. Furthermore, they're not really even two different substances: it's all made of the same basic stuff, just arranged and moving in different ways... Sometimes I feel like I'm on the verge of grasping something huge, but I can't quite conceive of it.

doesn't inventing new concepts involve science? Since you oftentimes need to ascribe new concepts to things to make them make sense? Needing to invent new concepts or frameworks often comes with being presented with information that fits badly in the old framework and to compare and realize something doesn't fit with everything else must be a form of science. Or is Deleuze exclusively concerned with metaphysics in this case? im confused
You mentioned Spinoza being put to death twice. Huh? Good episode but if you get these basic facts so wrong it makes me doubt the rest of the episode. I think you meant Bruno.
He discusses Spinoza dying of a lung infection in another episode, so maybe he meant it in a metaphorical sense? Like being exiled? I'm not sure why else he would say something different this episode
