  • Even with newer options available, the base model M1 Mac Mini is still an incredible computer and probably just about the best overall value out there. This video takes a look at the base model M1 Mac Mini after more than a year and a half of daily use and explains why I think it's still worth considering.

    Got a 16GB with 256GB one this year and I can’t be happier with it. Since I’ve rather the internal storage is only for stuff I want to access fast, I moved my 25GB photos library to an external SSD, there’s and article on apple support for it. I also moved my 10+GB Spotify cache to the external drive with a symlink.

    It’s a great computer. I have an M1 mini for my desktop work setup and an M1 Air for on the go. Between the two it’s a perfect setup. No hiccups, no slowdowns, a lot of bang for the buck IMO.

    Nice review! I have the base model, but with 16 Megs of ram and, other than some early glitches which were fixed by system updates, this has been the BEST Computer I've ever owned and I have been a Mac and PC user since 1987.

    We've got the first M1 mac mini, 16gb/512gb and as you say it's really really good. At home I got a previously owned base model like yours and I can't really see much difference between the two. Thank you for this high quality videos you produce. The set up and the decor, the blue vibe, just great. Keep up the good work, thank you!

    Heck yeah, that mini has been a major part of my TH-cam/Photography/Videography journey. I can’t get enough of how amazing that little computer is. Also, I’ve used my mini as a portable computer for the past 6 months. Toss it in a backpack, and bring a HDMI cable with you (so you can plug it into a monitor of some kind) and away you go. It’s not a great alternative for a notebook, but if you’re low on funds it’s easy to make the mini work for what you need. 😊 thanks for suggesting it so many months ago Tom.

    It's so wild to think how much has changed since the M1's were launched. Expectations about performance and price are totally different now. Plus the amazing efficiency = better battery life and less heat. I am so glad I got the 14" M1 MacBook Pro Max - it's by far the best computer I've ever owned (and most expensive!) but I enjoy using it so much. Thanks for this perspective on the recent past!

    I use the 13” M1 MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and it’s been a solid workhorse for conducting professional livestreams as well as video editing where my primary camcorders are the Canon XF605 that record in 4k HEVC 10-bit. The M1 MacBook Pro is easily able to handle multicam editing in Final Cut Pro with clips that are more than 2 hours long. The only reason I’ve considered upgrading to the 14” MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro chip is because the system can support multiple displays and has built-in HDMI out, which would eliminate my need for dongles or adapters.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lack of dongles and adapters for the MacBook really is nice! But the hub for the Mini has taken care of that problem for me pretty well too overall.

Really looks like something I could use and thanks for the info about the mac mini which was exactly what I have been trying to figure out. I bought an M1 mini in July 2021 16/512 and it has been a workhorse. I can run my production on it and I'm going to start running a lot of my office stuff. The main limitation on this system for me is that it can't support 3x4k monitors. So I have been running 2x4k on it for quite some time and had two 27 inch iMac for my other two screens. I found several solutions for this problem including Screen Sharing to an iMac using virtual monitors but the solution I have now is using an old MacBook Pro with Monterey and OCLP to drive the third 4k monitor. And performance is smooth - even on full-screen video. I use this with a 2014 iMac 27 which is a beast of a machine and the monitor is just fantastic. My ideal mini would be the M2 chip with 24 GB of RAM. Adding the media hardware on the base M2 chip is really generous of Apple. I have a 2021 MacBook Pro where I get the media hardware so I can run editing on the laptop but putting the media hardware on the cheapest Macs will further democratize content creation. I have been considering a Mac Studio lately. It is complete overkill for what I do but has the four monitor support. It would be a gross expenditure of funds for a relative convenience. I generally avoid Bluetooth for PC accessories because you just get a more responsive feel with wired devices. I use CoolerMaster mechanical keyboards and Logitech wired mice. These mice can be found in ergonomic full size and they are quite light and you don't have to replace the batteries or recharge them. I have used Logitech wireless dongle mice in the past and would use a USB-A extender cable so that they are line-of-sight to the mouse for best performance. If I had to use Bluetooth on a mini, then I might use a USB-Bluetooth device that I could move away from the mini.

    My M1 Mac Mini is awesome. I have the 256 SSD / 16GB RAM version and it performs so well I forget it's on my desk, even with rendering audio and video every day. Yes, I had bluetooth keyboard issues as well (using an Apple keyboard), but in recent months that problem also just seemed to go away. I'm also running a 5K and a 4K monitor together without any issues. I find the iPad Pro now handles all my mobile work. I used to have a 15" intel MBP, but I can't see a reason to buy a new MBP atm.

    I'm interested in trying my hand at editing. The M1 Mac Mini and the M1 Macbook Air are price-wise about the same (with $offers). Would the "heat and subsequent CPU throttling" of the M1 Macbook Air make the M1 mini a better candidate for editing? This would be my first Apple product and I think that I would appreciate the functionality of a portable device like the Macbook, I just don't know if that portability comes with a performance penalty when it comes to editing.

    Hey Tom, i really love your videos, as I am going through whats interesting to me I came across this video.. I wonder, and yes I suppose you're not into gaming really, but I wonder how this would work if I would use the Mac Mini as you have it for Game Streaming (Game would come from a PC), how would it go with Capture cards between Mac and PC when I want to stream the games on the Mac while I am playing on the PC.
    In my case I would use OBS. I hear in other videos, that there are things that seem a problem with the M1 series. Something with recording Desktop audio on the Mac m1 being a problem, and then needing to boot the Mac without certain security settings just to be able to do desktop recording. These things came from videos newer than this one here, so maybe you didnt came across that. If you would have any info on these things, because then I would think about getting the Mac Mini as well. Thanks for your content, Tom. I am really enjoying all of it. :)
    Cheers and greetings from good old Germany.

    This is such a liberating video from the standpoint of "check what you've already got before you buy new stuff".... I was seriously considering the Mac Studio for a while, settling on the price point at some $4000 for the option of Max processor, 32 core GPU , 64 GB RAM and 2TB SSD. This price is for Scandinavia, but in the US, the same config. is $3.199, go figure.. But I try to ask myself this same question every time I want to upgrade something - do you, or do you not, manage to do the work with what you've already got --> and what is the bottleneck, if any... And I realise that my M1 Mac Mini with 16GB RAM is as tough as when I bought it, and it was meant for livestreaming (works incredibly well) and simple video editing. I'm doing my client work mostly through recording with Atem Mini Pro that's in 1080 anyway. Even when I record instructional guitar playing videos in 4K in Ecamm (with three cameras at the same time), the source coming in from the cameras is 1080 50p. That all just flies through Final Cut Pro even when I sometimes add plugins, transitions, titles etc. Thanks!!!

      Yep, I agree 100%. Aside from making a video like this, I pretty much forget my Mac Mini exists, which means it’s doing its job really well! The 14” MacBook solved the problem of needing portability and a bit more power, but beyond that, there hasn’t been any reason to change or upgrade yet.

I use it for video editing in final cut, fx work in motion, audio processing in logic, 3D animation in maya and lightwave 3D and just about anything else. only regret I have is that I decided to be cheap and go for 512GB SSD instead of 1TB (could use the extra internal space.. the TB3 SSD takes up a plug that I could use for something else.). replacing it is not in my pipeline for the foreseeable future. I did my first edit on the M2 (1080P) and it did ok it still can't keep up with my maxed-out Intel iMac PRO but that cost 4X as much. I rarely edit on my laptop, you know I'm OLD and can't see those little screens! I'm kinda waiting for the M2 Ultra (2nd Generation) of the Studio before I update my desktop. I know this is super off topic from this current video, but I figured I'd ask on a recent upload. As a video production company that offers livestreaming, what do you think is the best approach in offering livestreaming services for things like sports, graduations, etc.? Who is the ideal person to go to? Should this approach be done through email, phone, or physically going to the school?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it varies by school and district quite a bit. For public schools, the district will make the final decision, but they’ll also probably be too busy to listen/care when you need them to. Going straight to a school site and speaking with a principal might be more effective, but they’ll also likely be busy too (but they’ll probably give you an email address where you can follow up, so that first quick in-person intro is helpful).
      If the school has a media program or ASB, you could also try reaching out to the person in charge of that since they’ll likely be involved in those events already. Most school websites will have a staff directory you can use👍

    I agree with you, the M1 Mac mini is a solid little machine. This is the one place I'm happy to agree to disagree with you (as you pointed out) 8gb can be great for many situations, but really struggles very quickly for others, the difference 16 gb leaps better overall, some apps like After Effects, DaVinci, Premeire, Cinema 4D just perform better with more ram. Even on my 32gb Mac studio After effects poops the bed. Final cut is designed to work well on any system these days. I know my computer needs differ greatly than most, so maybe I'm just out of touch with reality. ;)
    Apple has done a great job with swap memory (stored on the SSD) to compensate for the low ram, but ram is measured in nanoseconds and the ssd is measured in milliseconds. Knowing your needs before committing to a system, even a small upgrade (ram) could make a gigantic difference!

Like Apple continuing the M1 MacBook Air after release of new M2 model, I think Apple will continue selling the M1 Mac mini (maybe at even lower price) after M2. I'm no Apple rumors pro, but I'd bet there will be one before the end of the year. They usually do a computer refresh around October it seems.

    I thought my Bluetooth issues were over. Keyboard mouse and other stuff working fine. The only issue I had was that my printer would NEVER print wirelessly. I have changed printers and reinstalled software a million times with no luck. I’ve been so mad at my HP printer. I kept saying if Apple made a printer I’d pay $10000 for it. Until one day I grabbed my MacBook Air and tried to print it was fine!!! I realized it wasn’t a HP problem, it wasn’t a Mac problem, it wasn’t an M1 problem it was the MAc Mini M1 wireless problem rearing it ugly head.

      Oh no I’m sorry to hear that. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to some of these issues- I’ve printed fine to my HP printer from both my M1 computers. You and I have the same equipment and get different results- always frustrating.
