Are you rocking an M1 Mac mini? If so, what's your favourite and least favourite thing about it?

I agree Mark, I’m also very pleased with it. I can’t believe what the Mini M1 does with only 8 GB ram. It’s a game changer.

After thirty years of Microsoft, I switched over to a M1 Mac Mini (8Gb/512Gb) and are quite satisfied about it. I am NOT a video-editor or music creator, and use it as a desktop machine for office applications, email and browsing the web. I had a problem with the occasional beachballing, but after installing Cleaner One Pro, that is less of a problem. The 512 Gb SSD is handy for my many digitised music files, and also I have a Hagibis USB-C hub with two slots for external harddrives, boosting my disk space to 6.5 Tb - for the many legally downloaded movies I have. After acquiring the Mac Mini, I also ordered and received a MacBook Air M1 (8Gb/512Gb) and am very satisfied about the permanent syncing via Icloud. My only problems were: 1) MacOs and the M1 chip cannot run some legacy programmes which still run on my Intel laptop with Windows 11 and 2) Getting used to the different way MacOs commands work compared to Windows. Remember, I used MSDOS/Windows computers for over thirty years!

I bought the 16/2 version because I got loaned an 8/256 version by a friend and had quite a few crashes when it ran out of memory. I still get at least one or two memory crashes a month, so at some point when I can gather enough money together I will be upgrading to a Studio with at least 64gb of ram.

@@timgorr4387 but the inside has been greatly improved with the M1 chip. I can’t believe how much faster it is compared to my Windows 10 machine. The color is just a personal preference.

I am also still using the M1 Mac Mini for design and development. I thought I needed a faster machine that's why I bought the 14" MBP base model, now it ended up as a watching videos machine. LOL. I realized that the m1 mac mini with 16gb ram is just all i need in simultaneously using photoshop, xd, sometimes premiere and media encoder.

Very happy with our Mac Mini 8gig ram, 512gig memory. Used mainly for general use, family use, university studies, light media making for Uni submissions… we’re not 100% into the Apple ecosystem though (android phones, windows laptop for work), we could go any way in the future - but this will do us for the next several years, at least. Dongle required for dual screen set-up, have had no issues with a 3rd party Bluetooth keyboard, still use our old wired Microsoft mouse and wired Microsoft keyboard on standby because relying on battery life is risky when you have deadlines…

I scared myself yesterday while using my dust covered MacBook Air mid 2013. Hadn’t used it in a while so thought “why not”. Dusted it off, and loaded up a website, then a screen recorder. I heard a noise, had forgotten about fan noise, scared me.
I’m so used to my M1 Mac Mini and Galaxy Book S not making a sound.
Experiment done, going to sell the Air just to get rid of it.
Thanks for another great reminder video.

Hi Mark thanks for the update on your review of the Mac mini. I use the Mac mini as my daily machine for everything from web browsing and entertainment as well as personal banking and email and messenger communications As a consumer the Mac mini is my favourite desktop computer. MAC OS is my preferred operating system over windows and even Linux.

Thanks for another honest opinion. I’ve had mine for 6 months now and I too love it.
I notice that you have your mini mounted atop a supporting accessory which provides more ports - and still looks cool. Is your choice still valid or are you looking to upgrade that accessory?

    Another Great Video Mark!
The M1 Mac Mini has been the daily driver supporting my work issued Lenovo computer for the last year and it has been a fantastic device. It has more than ample power to complete all of my research work, do high level analysis and data calculations, and just about anything else I can throw at the device. It is truly a little performer.
It does have some kinks that Apple must address. The Bluetooth is terrible and sporadically just goes TITSUP just because it can. The wifi connection is a little skittish as well which is also disappointing, but I have a network port on the back of the computer so that is not an issue. If you plug in too many SSDs to the computer, kernel panics abound which leads to the horrible pink screen of death. Finally, the M1 MacMini does not natively support dual 4K monitors which is a PITA to setup a piece of software to get these beasts running and completing my workflow.
So where does this little MacMini really shine??? On my power bill! Once I dumped my Windows PC with an Intel Core i7, mid range graphics card, and 800 watt power supply for this MacMini, I have seen a solid $10 USD drop in my electric bill each month. This little 16GB Ram MacMini sips electricity compared to my 64GB PC and it completes my work just as quickly. It is a phenomenal little machine that I grabbed on a whim because of an excessive markdown at my local MicroCenter. It is so good, I finally broke down an purchased a 10 CPU Core M1 Pro MacBook Pro three months ago to slide into my desktop stack so the Mini could go to another part of my house and do "fun" computer things, but the MacMini is still setting here as my daily. I don't have the heart to move it from its job because it is doing so well at everything I throw at it. It is a shame the bluetooth issues prevent it from working with Universal Control, but the Bluetooth is the only flaw on this computer that would warrant a "think about it before you purchase" warning. The issues with the USB induced kernel panics is also another item to consider that would prevent a purchaser from using this device to control a drive array for a home server. And that last item of not being able to use the M1MacMini as an electric sipping file server is the greatest flaw, but would only impact a very few of the purchasers of this wonderful computer.

Bought one last year. The goal was to use it for consolidating Linux (Debian server), Windows 11 and use it as a general purpose machine. In all departments it's great! It replaced 2 power zipping computers and an old iMac and the mini runs it all on its 16GB memory without using much power.

My Mac Mini is my home desk top. It runs with an LG 32” 4k Display, MX Keys and MX Master 3 and links down through Universal control to my iPad Mini which doubles as my portable office computer. Most of my work is web based and it runs multiple windows including chats, calendar and video conferences with the greatest of ease. My old Intel MacBook Pro would sound like a Harrier jet taking off about 5 minutes into my first zoom call. I love this thing.

  • @andyabajo

The reason why I havent got the M1 Mac mini is mainly because of the bluetooth issue. I mean I live in a busy apartment with lots of wifi and devices that could interfere with one another, moreover most of our peripherals nowadays are connected wirelessly. not much of a meaningful experience if you constantly have your keyboard or mouse disconnecting randomly. M1 is powerful but if they had put an M1 Pro in there I might have been tempted to get one, but they did not so... M2 Mac mini it is.

    • @NicBox
      @NicBox 2 ปีที่แล้ว

If I recall the Bluetooth issues only occur if you have a device plugged into a USB A port, or at least that’s the case on my mini, and if I plug the same device into a USB hub connected to a USB C port it’s fine - but a workaround is not a fix! Bluetooth is still broken.

    • @Boitaoutix
      @Boitaoutix 2 ปีที่แล้ว

If you want to solve the Bluetooth problem, banish any USB 3 connection on the USB A connectors.
An easy test: Connect USB 3 devices via a USB 2 hub and you'll see Bluetooth working again.
USB 3 spectral noise is responsible for the Bluetooth problem. Take a look at Intel's "USB 3 White Paper" released in 2012.

Thanks for another honest review that’s respectful of the little machine that Steve Jobs introduced all those years ago. The Mac Mini allows value buyers (second tier to Apple purists?) to build systems that are the best bang for your buck. A used 27” Apple Thunderbolt Display (that also charges any MacBook) and the Logi MX for Mac Keys and Mouse could be the perfect budget setup for £1000? Not quite, the 8GB crumbles slightly with multitasking Office application, but it’s a gem nonetheless.

Still using, and will continue to, use my M1 full spec, Mini that I bought as soon as it came out. Its never missed a beat and as my computer use has declined on retirement to growing, download movies etc and the odd game its more than I need. So I'll be keeping it for a fair while use. It's just superb and has an enormous amount of power. I lose my bluetooth magic mouse connection once a week or so but no big deal. But yes, Apple, fix it. I actually prefer my magic mouse for its sleekness and ease of use. Especially for the uses I have for it. My keyboard is a Logitech MX Keys which looks and feels like an Apple keyboard with numerals.
I love my Samsung 28" 4K screen as well at around £350. So sadly I'm happy with my setup as the Mac Mini is so damned good. No purchases for me...for now

I replaces my PC with an M1 Mac Mini, I use a M1 Pro 14 inch laptop for my daily dev work, M1 Macbook pro is a personal machine for no Dev use. And I balance it all of with a Synology NAS for storage that works just perfectly. Home office has 1x ultrawide minitor (for macbook) mounted above my 2x main monitors (mainly used for Mac Mini but 1 can service my pc when required)

I can’t afford all your multiple macs. I had a slowing un-updatable 2010 iMac & briefly bought a MacBook Pro 16” before realising I both hated it & couldn’t afford it, when I already had an M1 iPad Pro 16GB 1TB. So I got rid of the old iMac & got a refurbed Mac Mini 16GB 1TB (I like that they match). I’ve got the very best I can afford or need, at home or on the move. I like to feel I’ve got more than I need, to last me years. I’ve got that and I’m happy. Some bells & whistles really are a waste. My machines are stunningly good. Thanks for your helpful content. 👍

Mark, Great video. I have two and use them for very different purposes. One holds my entire audio library and integrates Tidal into an audiophile program called Roon. Roon displays cover art, lyrics, and plays lossless music. The other M1 Mac Mini is used for live streaming via Ecamm. The M1 doesn’t break a sweat running either application.

I use my M1 Mini as a headless remote desktop, Plex media server, and video processor. I was previously using an old 2011 Mac Mini for this purpose, but it was really starting to struggle with basic tasks. So after winning a gen 8 iPad in a raffle from a local volunteer fire department, I traded it in at my local Best Buy (had been purchased at a Best Buy, and thus could not be exchanged at an Apple store), and spotted a used 8GB/512GB M1 Mini at a steep discount. It wound up only costing me about $200 between exchange and discount.
I was concerned that even for my modest usage the 8GB RAM might be inadequate. I've wound up using swap occasionally, and remote desktop usage slows down a fair bit when running Handbrake to convert video to x265, but the Plex server functionality never skips a beat (nVidia Shield streamers are amazing), and the limited RAM isn't generally a problem.
I've been quite pleased with the M1 Mini overall. Streamable media stays on a bus-powered portable USB HDD, and the whole thing stays hidden in the basement. Great stuff. I wish I could expand the RAM to extend its longevity, but if heavy processing gets annoying, I can just start doing that on my recently acquired 16GB/1TB M1 MacBook Air. Ideally the heavier processing power would be better on the Mini than the Air, but things just worked out this way. Love the low power draw of the M1 Mini that makes it a minimal issue to keep it running 24/7. Great device.

Yeah, I love my Mac mini.
For the first time in decades, I'm now switching between a MBP for couch/cafe use, and a Mac mini M1 as my work machine, instead of being MBP-only.
Transferring files between the two machines, and keeping things in sync is a bit of a pain, but the mini is a very nice performer.
    It just needs more ports.
Attaching two monitors can be painful (and expensive). You need to mix-and-match HDMI and USB-C.

I have a Mac Mini with 1GB storage, an old 27" Dell monitor and a 9-year old wired full-size Mac keyboard. My mouse is an old Logitech M557, bluetooth, on which I have only had one drop out, about a year ago. Perhaps a software upgrade contained a bluetooth tweak. The mouse is used on the desk on which the Mini sits.
The computer is only used for spreadsheets, Pages , etc. along with a few films and playing online bridge, nightly. I also have a pair of powered speakers plugged in the audio socket. So it is nowhere near pushed. An excellent buy, replacing a 15-inch 2013 MacBook Pro, which was always used , with the lid down.

well i’m using a mac mini but not an M1; it is a late 2009 core 2 duo which received maxed out ram and an ssd in 2015. never thought i will still be using it after 10 years it is still fine for browsing, mails, docs and even for basic home audio projects.
the main reason i have not jumped to the M1 mini are the lack of ports, the old chassis with the bluetooth problem and that better mini product line where you still see an intel based machine. that is where an M2 pro based mini modell shall come i suppose, or i just need to splash the cash and go for the base M1max studio instead and never look back.

Hi Mark, I absolutely hate my M1 Mac Mini. I purchased it about 2 years ago and as of late I have had nothing but issues with it crashing constantly. Today for instance it crashed and froze at least 15 times in an hours time while trying to use Adobe Lightroom Classic. It is defiantly the M1 because the same program runs perfectly on my old iMac running the same MacOS Ventura. I stumbled upon your channel while looking for answers to my problem. I started out loving the M1 Mac Mini but now that love affair has gone sour. Trying to complete a simple task of moving photos from one external drive to another from within Lightroom has become so nightmarish that I just want to throw it out the window.

I’m wondering would you recommend buying refurbished? I’m getting the M1 Air but I’m not sure if I I should get some Sabino by just getting it refurbished

    Good video, as always, mate.
If you look at the 16“ Pros, pretty sure they have some sort of shorting issue that fries the SSD. Check Louis Ross man's channel.

I have to say, I do not like the premise of this video. The M1 Mac Mini is still extremely relevant. I don’t see why anyone would stop using it if they own one.
