Monster Hunter Stories on 3DS is my introduction to Monster Hunter lol. I enjoyed it enough to eventually get Monster Hunter World, and then Monster Hunter Rise. I'll probably pick up this game too.
Clearly can see that you're not a JRPG fan here. But oh well, I like Rise for the gameplay.. I will definitely approach Stories 2 as a JRPG rather than traditional Monster Hunter. Excited for this game!!
it has a ton of the mainline's mechanics adapted to the JRPG format though edit: listed for clarity - part breaks - gathering and item crafting - forging weapons and armor - the 6 weapons available their mainline mechanics translated to turn based combat - armor and weapon skills - status effects and elemental damage
Navirou was always a mixed bag since stories 1 lol you hate him or you like him. Or you deal with him. He's a like a sour punch kid. Sour and sweet lol

@@TheInfinityMaster1 yeaaa true, tho the 3rd trailer seems to have more "special Navirou" in it which is interesting. Wonder if it will play any significant role or not.
I’ll just say, as someone who finished Stories 1, I also don’t like Navirou. However, there is a reason why he looks different and it made me really sad and stuff
When watching them play monster hunter stories 2 on Nintendo treehouse I really was intrigued by the gameplay and art style, I've never played a monster hunter game before but I might get this one since it's an RPG which I enjoy. That navirou cat sounded annoying and was definitely off-putting for me but the pros definitely outweigh the cons from what I see.
the first game in the series was essentially my first MH game ( I actually played Tri on the Wii but hated it after like 5 hours of trying to play it), I got it because I like turn based jrpg's and like the monster designs from the MH series , but I *HATED* how real MH games play, too clunky and no lock on targeting, and quite frankly I loved the first one a lot. It was enough to make me wanna give MH World a try after hearing a lot of better things about the games combat and quality of life changes, now I am a proper fan of the series, it's all thanks to the first Stories game. Also, yes, Navirou sucks but they seem like they might have toned him tone somewhat? His awful football headed design is still very off putting, I wish we got an actually cute palico
Navirou was definitely the worst part of the original stories game as well, but there should be enough fun side characters to detract from the blight that is Navirou. The systems and design of the game are a blast, especially cause every monstie has its own unique kinship attack with a cinematic that fully encompasses the personality of the monster, and it even changes a bit to reflect if you’ve given a monster a lot of elemental genes of a certain type. I strongly recommend that you play the demo.
There is a sort of reason why navirou looks like that, and they did show it in stories 1. If you wanna know, look it up. Or wait just incase they address it again in stories 2.
Alex from Nintendo Life says "That's more than enough waffling, let's dive right into things" for a live audience when? Game looks good, really looking forward to it!
I started playing MH with Tri on Wii, Moga is still my favorite village. I just love how two maps from Tri were revisited in Rise. Also how Stories 2 village has the same vibe as Moga, the people doing the Cha-Cha dance during the beginning ceremonial, even Nua Te's main theme slightly remixes Moga's one.
The demo was amazing, instant pre-order after playing it but I only have 2 concerns that hope get patched or at least optimized: draw distance ... you can see the grass and flowers popping up from nowhere as you run around ... then the frame rate drops in some parts and its super fluid in others. Can't wait for July 9th!
I’m so excited!!! I LOVED the first game. No idea how many hours I put in, but it was extremely fun. Super excited for the second one! Monster collecting games are my thing. I love a good team builder.
MHS on 3DS is AMAZE! It came out at the end of the 3DS’s life and it shows, being one of the better looking titles on the platform. Excellent game and I can guarantee you, the second hand price is going to sky rocket after the Switch release. Now is the time to buy it before the price is ridiculous.
@@arancione8336 Nice man! There are higher res versions on iOS & Android also. My daughter is playing it on her tablet. The only issue with that was that I couldn’t get it to sync with a game controller. Not that the touch controls are bad or anything. Navigating the biomes feels a little bit clumsier. In any case, I’m shocked that they haven’t ported the tablet version to Switch with its higher res textures etc.
Really liked the first one on the new3DS and I think it was the only game I played with the 3d effect always enabled: FPS suffered a little, but was well worth it. I'm a bit sad that this time I haven't the option.
We'll see how Navirou is with his voice and such in this. I didn't dislike him in the first game since all you hear is grunting and meowing like sounds out of him. I just hope I can dress him up as a cheerleader again and the talking scenes keep the costumes on him.
There is a reason behind Navirou's differences to other felynes. And I loved him in the first game, but his new voice here is off putting for sure. I'll probably play with Japanese voice acting.
I bought the first game on 3ds on a whim and was SHOOK at how much I loved it. I loved it so much I beat the whole game again when it released on mobile. I never thought a second one would be made so I am beyond excited!
Monster Hunter Stories was one of the final 3DS game I bought and it was a great spin-off of a franchise that was known for a completely different genre. It had its own unique identity, while being simple (a bit too simple). This looks like the team listened and expanded the game from the ground up! I hope this takes off, because Pokemon has become diluted and dry of its former self, while Stories 2 seems to be upping the ante
I love that Stories 2 is getting some more love because I’ve been so excited for it since it was originally revealed! I poured way too many hours into Stories 1 and I thoroughly enjoyed the demo for Stories 2, so I can’t wait for this one to release!
I'm so glad this spin off is getting the attention it deserves. I got out my old trusted friend the 3ds xl this year to play the first one and i loved it! So hyped for the second and played the demo for ages before getting to the end cutscene which ends the demo. Can't wait til release day
Navirou is like the Navi from Ocarina of Time. He is supposed to be annoying ;). There is a reason he looks different. It was explained in MHS1 and there are others like him. And yes, his voice is annoying in English, that is why I prefer it in Japanise like in the Anime.
I really like the demo. My one criticism would be the lack of control your given over you party during battles. I like building synergy when RPGs afford me a party to use and I wasn’t a fan of the slight sense of randomness beyond controlling your avatar. Synergy certainly isn’t absent here, and when it happens it’s super satisfying. But it did make the “combo attacks” (I can’t remember exactly what they’re called.) feel more like opportunities you needed to jump on rather than an opportunity you made for yourself. It doesn’t always feel that way, but I do lament not having total control over what my party does. Its probably a more personal gripe than an objective issue with the game. Since the battles are clearly tuned with this in mind. Still had a ton of fun and would recommend this game to any RPG fans out there.
The first monster hunter stories game was amazing and I enjoy this more than the other monster hunter games. The eggs you find are extremely important, which you just glanced over, and you need to watch what Navirou says because it can lead to a really good egg. Those better eggs will have more combat abilities and they will help you with pvp, assuming it is in this version of the game.
I WAS NOT expecting to honestly like this game, I tried the demo and not only did I enjoy it I had fun! It's not often that this happens and whenever it does you know you have to get the game when you get a chance. I will definitely be picking up a copy next time at at a Walmart!
I was enjoy the video until I saw his gammoth plush behind him. I've been trying to find one for years and it breaks my heart that it hasn't happened yet..
4:38 This is incorrect, the enemy DOES attack still, you just take less damage and they take the full assault of the attack, increasing your kinship gauge.
I love the graphics, especially after playing the first one back in 2017. And I’m so glad it’s voice acted in English now, I’m surprised but happy about it. His look is explained in the first game, he has special powers. The game so far seems pretty similar to the first aside from changing weapons mid battle, which is really cool
So glad to see there's some interest growing about this game! The first one definitely flew under the radar, and I think a lot of people have shrugged this one off too. I made a little video on why people should consider it, and it's great to see people like Alex (who aren't super big on turn based JRPGs) really enjoying it as well!
This one has gotten MUCH better promotional material and attention. I'm expecting this to sale very well, especially since Rise is still going strong and creating more fans. Really hope Stories becomes a long-running series!
Navirou is part of a small group of felines from story 1 that received superpowers. They have a small story arc about this and explained his back story there. Gist is: he just looks like that but is unique across felines
I have never really played any Monster Hunter related games besides MHRise. But when I was playing Monster Hunter Stories 2's demo I forgot it was even a demo! I had a blast and I am actually waiting for my Switch to charge a bit so I can go back to playing it :D.
I'm not a big fan of turn-based JRPGs aside from Pokemon, I'm a massive Pokemon fan, but I've been really excited for this game being a massive Monster Hunter fan. I'm glad to hear the combat is a lot more going on under the hood and it looks like a lot of fun. Also, they have Astalos in the game so I have to play it for that reason alone! I would love it if they brought Astalos over to Rise too.
I hope Quarpeco and Ketchawatcha come back... i did the entirety of stories 1 with them as well as a nercyllla as soon as I could as they're some of my favourite monsters (especially because Quarpeco is on the hat or mail box of every mail feline since tri and yet he's never come back and I miss the tricky bird!)
Hunters: they kill monsters Riders: they kill monsters with monsters.. Yeah, that’s probably it, haha! And also they bond with their monsters, they’re like family! 😆
@God Slayer Exactly! MHSTORIES 2 is for all ages, but doesn’t mean that can’t be enjoyed by younger and older alike. And I like that this game is focused more on the story and the world than Rise. Rise is focused on gameplay more & I like Rise too. Also I like that Nintendo has a different ‘formula’ than Sony or Xbox. This is that makes Nintendo unique. :))
Don't stress hating Navirou, most of us over the age of 8 did in the first one, too. He basically acted as the surrogate for the silent protagonist's lack of dialogue in 1, which turned the whole game into a smaltzy Pokémon kid's plot about friendship and bonds...it was horrid. Also, as for his different appearance, yeah that's a lore thing: he is basically a genetically modified mutant felyne created as a weapon to fight monsters. He was made by a "mad scientist" like character in Stories 1.
This game is my ideal pokemon game. If Sword & Shield was completely like this in terms of gameplay I wouldn't care about the national dex (honestly i still don't care about national dex) but radical soda's review extravaganza on it rlly did show alot of holes in it's production that feel like they shouldn't be there at this point. I'm defintely grabbing this over the diamond/pearl remakes
I'll buy the game and I'm interested to see how the game develops late game. In the first MH Stories, mid to late game, the monster patterns went out the window and it was more blind guessing if you could guess what attack was used. Navirou was definitely a mixed bag for me also. He did have a story arc in the first game that explains why he's different. I'm more glad that I won't be restricted to the MH language like in the 3DS. I didn't enjoy hearing when hearing characters speak in the first game.
I played the first one (it's rare and expensive on 3DS and there's a more affordable mobile version) and, in general, it's friendly as Ever Oasis, that doesn't mean that both games are bad, on the contrary that are pretty good, especially MHS, it's like playing MH3U or MH4U but an RPG version (and with less definition)
I wonder if the framerate is uncapped on the switch version because of a switch pro release later this year? No other reason really to have it uncapped, devs usually cap at 30 if the fps fluctuates THAT much between like 25-35 and upwards of 60.
there is a reason why navirou looks diferent, i wont spoil much since it seems they will talk about it in the story of stories 2. but basically in stories 1 things were done to navirou
I think it is completely fair to say that MH:Stories is a Pokomen-clone with an MH-Skin, however it is also fair to say imho after playing the first game and the Demo that it has more love & care put into it, than any pokemon in a whiiillle, but i am also being biased since I care more about Rathalos than Pikachu....
THIS! Although if were comparing wyverns to pikachu, i'd think a tobi kadachi would fit more, being a lighting squirrel is closer to the lighting mouse, but yeah, Rathalos>Charizard in my books
Was playing rise so much I wanted to step away from anything MH related, so I picked up BD2. Would probably try the demo after and think about picking it up after. I did really enjoy the 1st one especially the min maxing, but the rng was horrendous. I saw on one gameplay that it seems a bit easier this time, so in the far future I might still pick this up
The framerate was too choppy and uneven, and the camera controls feel really weird to me that I'm going to pass. The framerate is mostly around 20fps, and I've seen it go as low as 14fps and higher in rare situations. I wish it wasn't a switch exclusive. Would probably look gorgeous on my xbox series x.

Adam K This is nothing like pokemon besides the monster collecting. The gameplay mechanics in this is completely different from Pokemon, you clown.
Not too happy with diamond and pearl remake
@@Aggro224 Lol I bet you’re real fun at parties
I'm glad you loved MHS2 Alex and I'm very excited to try out the demo when it comes out! :D
(Also, Alex, *Navirou had a backstory in the 1st MHS of why he looks like that and the abilities he has,* so I feel you might've appreciated him more if you finished the 1st MHS game)
Monster Hunter Stories on 3DS is my introduction to Monster Hunter lol. I enjoyed it enough to eventually get Monster Hunter World, and then Monster Hunter Rise. I'll probably pick up this game too.
Well I was already looking at buying this but you really sold me. I love games like this.
Clearly can see that you're not a JRPG fan here. But oh well, I like Rise for the gameplay.. I will definitely approach Stories 2 as a JRPG rather than traditional Monster Hunter. Excited for this game!!
it has a ton of the mainline's mechanics adapted to the JRPG format though
edit: listed for clarity
- part breaks
- gathering and item crafting
- forging weapons and armor
- the 6 weapons available their mainline mechanics translated to turn based combat
- armor and weapon skills
- status effects and elemental damage
Navirou was always a mixed bag since stories 1 lol you hate him or you like him. Or you deal with him. He's a like a sour punch kid. Sour and sweet lol
Apparently his Japanese voice was really good and well liked. I don't know whst they did to him in the english version to make him unlikeable.
@@meikahidenori I'm switching to Japanese audio just because of that. (English Navirou sounds terrible. I much prefer the Japanese voice actor for him IMO)
@@TheInfinityMaster1 I played the demo with the japanese audio and I think he has the same voice as MHS1 and its reaaaally good, haven't heard him in english, but reading you all I don't think I'll switch hahahaha
Yea theres a reson why naviru is different from other felynes
Wish he finished the first MHS game to learn more about Navirou's backstory!
@@TheInfinityMaster1 yeaaa true, tho the 3rd trailer seems to have more "special Navirou" in it which is interesting. Wonder if it will play any significant role or not.
I can't fucking wait to play MHS2
as long as i can still customize my armor im gonna try playing it
You can, in the first one you could even just change the coloring for free of all the different armours
I’ll just say, as someone who finished Stories 1, I also don’t like Navirou. However, there is a reason why he looks different and it made me really sad and stuff
I understand I played it to

I highly recommend *Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition* in addition to Monster Hunter Stories 2 as well! :D
Navirou was pretty annoying in the first Stories, don't be surprised if he gets in your nerves.
There is a sort of reason why navirou looks like that, and they did show it in stories 1. If you wanna know, look it up. Or wait just incase they address it again in stories 2.
I have the first game on my phone and I'm actually looking forward to this one.
Alex from Nintendo Life says "That's more than enough waffling, let's dive right into things" for a live audience when?
Game looks good, really looking forward to it!
You'd hate being in my house, you'd hear cat puns all the time. That is just my house. Lol
This game looks totally up my ally. Great game to play with my kids!
After hearing Navirou's voice, I might just play the game with the Japanese voices. I'm used to this from the first game anyway.
When he erased the name and went straight to D
"Fuckin doshin lol"
I’m so excited!!! I LOVED the first game. No idea how many hours I put in, but it was extremely fun. Super excited for the second one! Monster collecting games are my thing. I love a good team builder.
MHS on 3DS is AMAZE! It came out at the end of the 3DS’s life and it shows, being one of the better looking titles on the platform. Excellent game and I can guarantee you, the second hand price is going to sky rocket after the Switch release. Now is the time to buy it before the price is ridiculous.
US copies on eBay have already been high for a while. I was lucky to get a new copy from PlayAsia for $45 a few months back.
The style is really cool it looks like a anime cartoon from the 2010's
Considering I thought stories 1 was pretty good. And stories 2 already looks better. I'm pretty sure the answer is yes.
Really liked the first one on the new3DS and I think it was the only game I played with the 3d effect always enabled: FPS suffered a little, but was well worth it. I'm a bit sad that this time I haven't the option.
Well the 3ds is dead
@@notimeforcreativenamesjust3034 well I still play mine. People still buy them. Still alive in my book.
This game wasn't even on my radar until I played it. I love it!!!
Lol the embargo really lifted on this before the big Nintendo game releasing on Friday
It's out in 2 weeks with a demo out on friday. Reviews are expected if a demo is about to drop.
They should go with this visual style for any other game they make in the future
Absolutely not
For more mh stories games? Yes
For main games like Rise? HELL NO
ew no what the fuck nice troll
This visual art style works for MHS. But in the main line....yeah no
We'll see how Navirou is with his voice and such in this.
It's coming to PC day 1, by the way.
Alex is with out a doubt my fav part of this channel
The first monster hunter stories game was amazing and I enjoy this more than the other monster hunter games. The eggs you find are extremely important, which you just glanced over, and you need to watch what Navirou says because it can lead to a really good egg. Those better eggs will have more combat abilities and they will help you with pvp, assuming it is in this version of the game.
Navirou’s English voice is awful to my ears, but his Japanese voice is thankfully very cute.
He sounds like a Horrible Mickey Mouse
I WAS NOT expecting to honestly like this game, I tried the demo and not only did I enjoy it I had fun! It's not often that this happens and whenever it does you know you have to get the game when you get a chance. I will definitely be picking up a copy next time at at a Walmart!
I was enjoy the video until I saw his gammoth plush behind him. I've been trying to find one for years and it breaks my heart that it hasn't happened yet..
4:38
This is incorrect, the enemy DOES attack still, you just take less damage and they take the full assault of the attack, increasing your kinship gauge.
This game looks really pretty. I like the bright colors on the monsters
I’m so happy that mhs 2 has more fame and is more known around the monster hunter community and ultimately the gaming community
I actually love navirou I’m 25 years old and for some reason still love little sidekick characters like this
Title should be edited from "Is it any good?" to "Listen to me sort out my personal feelings about an animated cat"
Hunters: they kill monsters
Riders: they kill monsters with monsters..
Yeah, that’s probably it, haha! And also they bond with their monsters, they’re like family! 😆
however, with rise out now, you can kill monsters with monsters too xD done it several times
Are the frame rate skips in the actual game/demo as bad as they were in this TH-cam video?
I played the first one (it's rare and expensive on 3DS and there's a more affordable mobile version) and, in general, it's friendly as Ever Oasis, that doesn't mean that both games are bad, on the contrary that are pretty good, especially MHS, it's like playing MH3U or MH4U but an RPG version (and with less definition)
There is also rite of chanelling where you can transfer one monster ability to another so you can basically make a fire breathing aptonoth
I wonder if the framerate is uncapped on the switch version because of a switch pro release later this year? No other reason really to have it uncapped, devs usually cap at 30 if the fps fluctuates THAT much between like 25-35 and upwards of 60.
So excited for this release and the demo's a blast! Navirou needs a mute or 'text only' option is all.
Can you get the Kamura Garb layered armor in the demo? I have a monster Hunter Rise save file
there is a reason why navirou looks diferent, i wont spoil much since it seems they will talk about it in the story of stories 2. but basically in stories 1 things were done to navirou
Definitely willing to give this a try at some point. Not any time soon though for I have way too many games to play at the moment
I'm torn between PC and Switch version... Which one should I buy!?
Oh my god, I hope they cap that framerate. 30 to 60 fluctuations drive me nuts
And wastes battery too.
THIS! Although if were comparing wyverns to pikachu, i'd think a tobi kadachi would fit more, being a lighting squirrel is closer to the lighting mouse, but yeah,
Rathalos>Charizard in my books
@@lewa3910 get what u mean, i was going more for the most recognisable monsters from each series!
More waffling please ❤ 😆
So…it should have been monster rider ( a monster hunter story) wings of ruin?
🤔 you know, pretty good analysis
In head to heads, your enemy still attacks you. Its just a regular attack (I think). Your health decreases so something happens
The camera settings you do need to change before entering the game
Turn based?? Omg, Yes 😱😱
I highly recommend *Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition* in addition to Monster Hunter Stories 2 as well! :D
the turn based combat kinda blows it for me. i'd just like to play a monster hunter game with the hefty combat but with an actual story and characters
Cat from Mario maker 3 ideas:
camera block:
This detects when a enemy or Mario appears in it's sight and sends an electrical current
It can be flipped, have wings and be placed on tracks it has two variations in one it can be flipped by jumping on it and in the other it flips automatically
Electric cables:
If a object is activated by Mario, a shell or something and it is connected by a cable to another block(s), that block(s) gets activated also it can be connected like a track (available in 3dw)
Electric block:
When powered this can be touched (available in 3dw)
Plugshroom:
When touching the ZL button you switch everything from on to off or vice versa
Ice flower:
It is a fire flower that shots ice balls that turn enemies into blocks, The blocks can be passed through by Mario but not by enemies and the ice balls have some different effects on other enemies also ice blocks can be placed separately
Anti block:
This block can be placed on anything, tracks pipes bullet bill blasters etc, they act like a boo that doesn't deal damage in all of these. But it makes holes inside ground which Mario can be in and they have a deletion variation that deletes ground, destroys enemies and platforms (available in 3dw)
Robo Mario:
This has the same physics as a player, it can be picked up and given power ups, at night it presses the y button every second (available in 3dw)
Platform pad:
You can change the position of this platform depending on where you stand
3d world:
Potted Pirhana plant:
It's a pot which you can carry with a Pirhana plant that eats people, can shoot fire and has a tiny flutter
Skating shoe:
It acts like a koopa car, with a little twirl when you jump, if you don't move it on ice or the snow them,
Conkdor:
It swing it's head automatically which can hit blocks and items
Ports:
Stone blocks and toads can be used outside story mode
All 3d world masks are in the other game styles
New non obvious clear conditions:
Get to the end with the p switch timer still going
Get to the end with the level being OFF
Only jump ( ) times
Destroy ( ) robo Mario's
Get to the end with ( ) robo Mario's
There are also NOT clear conditions that are the same as different clear conditions but you lose the clear condition if you clear them
Extra stuff:
You can apply a "respawn" trait to things that can respawn in vs mode
You can move the end and start goals
And where multiplayer players start
Goomba shoes and Yoshis can be ridden by making them go up below the player
Clear pipes can fuse
You unlock items by default but you can immediately get a truck to give you some items at demand
And you can costumize ALL editor ui
Randomness is based on your clock
You can let your levels be downloaded and edit or not
New modes:
Ninja training, all courses get ninjis so you can train for new ninji courses
Mario challenge, you can participate in these level making competitions in which a theme for the courses is chosen and you need to make a course around that
Levels can also be cleared in separate clear conditions and those clears will be categorized differently
Trailer and game plan:
First, there's a teaser trailer with ONLY the ice flower and no new features
Then there's a trailer with every little detail about the ice flower with some new features (no new items) in plain sight and near the direct ends It is announced that the game will be updated weekly (which it will) and the direct ends with some random people saying this direct sucked and some other stuff
So then new items are unlocked to everyone weekly with the ice flower unlocked at the start and then everyone is happy
Yeah there’s a reason in monster hunter story 1 for why Navirou looks like that. He was also less annoying because he spoke in Gibberish and not in English
Awesome!! The combat looks really good
I actually dont like the monster hunter games, but loved the demo of stories 2 and agree pretty much with everything said in the video, ive pre ordered it now and looking forward to the release date. I like turn based combat and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.
