With no divisions, you INCREASE the chances of teams finishing with tied records who have various amounts of common opponents.

If it goes to 20. The pod scenario with 4 divisions is the only way to keep set rivals and regions. FSU and Clemson are SEC in their investment, history, and passion for football. So, there is no argument that can be made against that. UNC is naturally a fit with a massive brand that is clearly number 3. NC State or Va Tech are the only other 2 that truly make sense. Especially if football is the emphasis. NC State has a ceiling but high floor and great athletics overall, and heated rivalry between UNC. Va Tech with “Enter Sandman” and that environment absolutely would be a fit though.

Your assumption is that conference titles are still relevant. In the age of expanded playoffs it only makes sense to scrap conference playoff games. The SEC should play without divisions. Designate one rivalry game for each school that will be played every year. Play the remaining 18 teams on a rotating basis using a ten game schedule. That way every school gets five conference home games and two non-conference home games each year.

4 games - East Division opponents
Vandy - SE Division (perm. rival)
Alabama - Central Division (perm. rival)
Right there, you've eliminated 2 spots ANNUALLY from their rotation.

Play 3 teams in the division, 2 teams in each of the 3 other divisions and 1 permanent cross rival. Winners of each division would be guaranteed a CFP slot. Play a conference semi-final games. I will prolly get hate for this but I'd love the SEC and Big Ten to both expand to 20 teams and split from the rest and create their own league with them as the two conferences (like AFC and NFC). Then gimme a 14 game regular season with 11 conference games with a 3-8-8 scheduling model. No divisions, 3 protections, and everybody plays everybody over a 2 year span. 1 non con game against a cupcake, and 2 non con games against teams in the other conference that finished around where you finished the previous season like the NFL does it.
Don't have a singular conference title game and instead have an NFL style playoffs with 14 teams qualifying. 7 from each conference with the #1 seed in each conference after the regular season getting a bye. You play through the playoff bracket with postseason games hosted by the higher seed. The conference title games are basically NFC/AFC title games. U can have those in Indy or in Atlanta if you want. Then the champions of those conferences play in the natty (Superbowl) to end the year. The winner is crowned the national champion
This model gets rid of a subjective committee and subjective rankings, takes scheduling out of the hands of the schools, balances schedules every season to make sure the best teams are playing each other consistently, and maintains the purity of CFB rivalries while also having the chance to create new ones.

@@tarheel7406 I hear you, but I think 20 IS deep enough. The +6 I assume would be Notre Dame, Miami, Florida State, and Clemson as locks and in my mind I had UNC and Duke as the other two (that can be debated idrc). In the new 40 team model, every national champ since 1991 would be a member of the new SEC/B1G. Also since the national title game became a thing in 1998, the only participant to not be a part of the new SEC/B1G would be 2022 TCU. And they set records in their margin of defeat.
The best of the best in the country have always come from amongst that new SEC/B1G field so i don't think you need to dilute the conferences more by getting up to 48 teams just for the sake of it. Since those teams provide the best quality, and 40 teams is still a lot imo (the big 4 pro leagues in the US all have 30-32 teams) I believe it will still provide national interest and legitimacy.
