@@trappedinamerica7740 Every young, male shooter that has gone on a killing spree in the United States also has a history of treatment with psychotropic drugs… It was only after psychiatric medicine started targeting young people with mind-altering medica- tions that we witnessed this explosion in violence.”² Another site contains an article with the headline, “Violence in Schools? It’s the Prozac and Ritalin Stupid!”³ Yet another site has an article titled, “Antidepressant Drugs Causing Epidemic of Mania, Mayhem and Murder: America’s addiction to dangerous ’s hits crisis levels.” ( stands for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, a class of antidepressant medications.) The general argument is that in the last two decades the use of psychiatric medications, particularly among young people, has increased drastically, resulting in a dramatic increase in youth violence, including school shootings. This view is ex- pressed by the following passage: It is abundantly clear that the epidemic of craziness and violence we are witnessing in America . . . is being fueled by dangerous psychotropic drugs . . . that are causing normally sane people to fly off the hook and act out with insane acts of mania or violence.⁵ It is true that psychiatric medications, like all drugs, can have side eects. I worked for over ten years in a psychiatric hospi- tal for children and adolescents and have seen this rst-hand. There were clients whose medications made them drowsy, gave them tics, tremors, rashes, or weight-gain, or had other negative eects. Medications can also have withdrawal eects, meaning that people have adverse reactions when they stop taking the medication, particularly if they stop suddenly. What is the evidence supporting the link between psychiatric drugs and school shootings? This article examines the issue from two perspectives: the societal and the individual. The societal perspective considers the overall claim that the rise in medication use has caused a rise in violence, and the individual perspective examines claims about specic shooters going on rampages due to medications. THE INCREASING USE OF PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATIONS The use of psychiatric medications in this country has indeed increased signicantly since the 1980s. Between 1987 and 1996 the use of psycho-stimulants such as Ritalin increased nearly four-fold and the use of antidepressants by adolescents ages 15 to 18 increased over four-fold. Similarly, there was a 75% increase in the use of antidepressants from 1996 to 2005. There is no question that the use of psychiatric medications has grown substantially in the last twenty-ve years. The problem with the argument blaming medications for murder, however, is that though there has been a signicant increase in the use of psychiatric medications, there has not been a corresponding increase in violence. And all because he want to maintain the lie that gun control doesn't work. The data makes it clear it does. What doesn't work is militarizing society.
How far removed from human regard does he need to be before his supporters wake up? The blatant disregard for human life makes me sick. in the United States also has a history of treatment with
psychotropic drugs… It was only after psychiatric medicine
started targeting young people with mind-altering medica-
tions that we witnessed this explosion in violence.”²
Another site contains an article with the headline, “Violence
in Schools? It’s the Prozac and Ritalin Stupid!”³ Yet another site
has an article titled, “Antidepressant Drugs Causing Epidemic of
Mania, Mayhem and Murder: America’s addiction to dangerous
’s hits crisis levels.” ( stands for Selective Serotonin
Reuptake Inhibitors, a class of antidepressant medications.)
The general argument is that in the last two decades the use
of psychiatric medications, particularly among young people,
has increased drastically, resulting in a dramatic increase in
youth violence, including school shootings. This view is ex-
pressed by the following passage:
It is abundantly clear that the epidemic of craziness and
violence we are witnessing in America .
.
. is being fueled by
dangerous psychotropic drugs .
.
. that are causing normally
sane people to fly off the hook and act out with insane acts
of mania or violence.⁵
It is true that psychiatric medications, like all drugs, can have
side eects. I worked for over ten years in a psychiatric hospi-
tal for children and adolescents and have seen this rst-hand.
There were clients whose medications made them drowsy, gave
them tics, tremors, rashes, or weight-gain, or had other negative
eects. Medications can also have withdrawal eects, meaning
that people have adverse reactions when they stop taking the
medication, particularly if they stop suddenly.
What is the evidence supporting the link between psychiatric
drugs and school shootings? This article examines the issue
from two perspectives: the societal and the individual. The
societal perspective considers the overall claim that the rise in
medication use has caused a rise in violence, and the individual
perspective examines claims about specic shooters going on
rampages due to medications.
THE INCREASING USE OF
PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATIONS
The use of psychiatric medications in this country has indeed
increased signicantly since the 1980s. Between 1987 and 1996
the use of psycho-stimulants such as Ritalin increased nearly
four-fold and the use of antidepressants by adolescents ages 15 to
18 increased over four-fold. Similarly, there was a 75% increase
in the use of antidepressants from 1996 to 2005. There is no
question that the use of psychiatric medications has grown
substantially in the last twenty-ve years.
The problem with the argument blaming medications for
murder, however, is that though there has been a signicant
increase in the use of psychiatric medications, there has not
been a corresponding increase in violence. In fact, just the op-
posite has

@@voteformethanks5307 it doesnt have to be a fact of life. gun lobbyists and those shilling for them make it that way.
And now the Republican Party are trying to condition us to accept it as inevitable. And then use it as an excuse for militarizing society for our own protection as Vance does here by suggesting that schools need "security" against people with military style weapons.
❤ to all who lost loved ones.
Thank you, Fred. So sorry for your loss
They weren't a "fact of life" when I was growing up. I thought we were going to "Make America Great Again!"

Because the NRA PUMPs their pockets !
Wait a second, the father that was interviewed here said, "This will happen again" at 2:44. How is that not a fact of life?? And JD said "I hate this is a fact of life".
Now listen to what he actually said...
Not just a gun...an AR! Disgusting!

Thank you for this interview, CNN. Fred Gutenberg is an American hero - a hero in our unending tragedy of gun violence.
No such thing as"gun violence".Try people violence.
He’s great. I have 2 of his books. Amazing.
Yes but removing the word from > gun violence < still leaves violence which will go on just with a new word before violence
No more thoughts and prayers!!

Heartbreaking that we see these heartbroken parents having to speak up about the worst day of their lives 💔

JD Vance has children, but he doesn't seem particularly invested in the future of this country
Or the future of his own children
His kids will go to a private school I’m sure.
The NRA OWNS the GOP. That's why
One of the species that eats their young.
Guns are not the problems is mental health are you blind. It is a huge problem here in USA and people just blame a person.

For Christmas yet! Makes me want to throw up.
Its happening in grocery stores, too.
Well said, Mr. Guttenberg. Thank you for all you are doing to advocate gun violence in our country.
Advocate AGAINST gun violence.
People problem. Not a gun problem
Why aren't we looking into mental health issues? It's not a gun issue
Just what is "gun violence"? It's criminal violence that uses a gun as the tool. Just like stabbings and DUI deaths use knives and alcohol. Quit blaming the object and learn to blame the criminal.
@@willa.1093every country has mental health problems, this is a gun issue
Marjorie Taylor Green is the congresswoman for the district where this shooting took place. This gun-toting, fervent gun advocate has been strangely silent this week.
Yup.
Lord.
She's probably hiding in her basement to wait for the coast to clear
… because there isn’t a trace of blue on this tragedy. And now we have to listen to some MAGA bot trying to turn our public schools into actual battlegrounds between MAGA supporters and the “psychos” who benefit from the MAGA position on gun laws.
Marjorie has blood on her hands
Thanks JD for giving up on our kids.
He is a bully & an idiot
And the facts he has children of his own
I'm from Europe and school shootings is something I only know from American news channels...
Yup, with that attitude, it def is. The only time ppl like jd Vance will change their minds about trying to do anything different is if it personally affects his family.
Truth 🌝
Agreed
I agree..Canadians would not respect a politician like Shady Vance
Thank heavens no to Canadian version Vance.
😂. Canadian government is literally like a communist country now. Idiots.
Thankfully there are others Canadians like myself who have not been brainwashed by the media, politicizing these tragic deaths for political gains right before the election. This man just twisted Vance's words and you just swallowed it, gullibly. Where did Vance say "we need to accept"? No matter how tough the law is there will always be Psychopaths. Just look at the states with red flag laws, there are still shootings. One option is to repeal the Second Amendment, good luck with that. A more sensible option like Vance said is to protect the schools. We do that for banks so we can invest that money for our children
I hope you are correct, bc right now the polls are saying that PP is way ahead, and he is a trumper jd wanna be. We will be dealing with similar crap if he wins.
No, you respect a politician like Trudeau! 🤔
My thanks to Mr. Guttenberg for speaking out. He knows the horrors of losing an innocent child to gun violence in school. We all need to listen to his message. We have 400 million guns (or more) in the US. That is crazy! We have a war right here on our own soil, but we don’t call it that.
JD Vance is a sick human being for saying that. Being gunned down at such a young age is not a fact of life at all.
There has not been a school shooting in my country, ever. Private ownership of guns is basically illegal. I cannot think of any freedom that I might not have that you have in the US except owning a gun. Our schools are open, kids are free.
Dad is right. Harris walked the school with him; makes me like her even more. I didn’t realize that.
I listened to all of Vance on this subject. Again he is out of touch with reality.
Fact of life???
No. It's not.
Hi from Australia.
JD 'just dumb' Vance is too ignorant for words.

Harris did say she wanted to remove all police from schools. Just look it up. I say keep the police in school and remove tampon machines from boys restrooms and locker rooms from schools. Because that is deranged and disgusting.
He went to Yale due to good grades… he is 70000 times more intelligent than you 😂
@@janycebrown4071 weird like putting tampon machines in boys restrooms.
Vance is nuts, security guards are not a guarantee against shootings at schools or anywhere else. Security guards respond only after the act happens. More guns are not the answer. Removing the AR15 style from the USA is the answer. The NRA wanted to give every teacher a gun. Can you imagine a 60-year-old teacher with a gun?
and of course there is absolutely no chance that a student might get their hands on the gun--or that the teacher themself goes "postal" As usual the money made on guns by the manufacturers (wonder if they have a lobby? mmm) far outweighs any meaningful reform. Will never stop the demand for guns but you attack the supply. Make buying and owning weaponry so expensive that most folks wouldn't be able to afford them.
Is anyone surprised by this, seriously. We need to do better by voting better. Blue across the board
Really respected this interview. Great responses from both. GOD bless you sir, and thank you for letting me in on so many wrongs going on concerning gun violence. More people need to see this.

I really don’t understand the fascination with guns, it seems like some Americans are so paranoid about giving up their weapons.
An American guy came to live in Canada. He wanted to keep his gun while walking. Well, we said no. Since that time, the American fellow walks on the street and feels safe, knowing that nobody else has a gun in his pocket.
Cowards with guilty conscience scared their deeds are coming for them. 😮
I learned a few years ago why some people keep an arsenal. A right wing friend has weapons for when the GOVERNMENT comes for him!
they are scared rabbits and the guns are their security blankets. I'm speaking of the fanatics.

"Gave his son a firearm with knowledge that he was a threat to himself and others"... So the people suggesting that there needs to be access to mental healthcare must be lost on this one. This kid's background checked every box on the "mentally disturbed, do not give them a firearm" criteria, but daddy being the fanatical rube that he is, felt that 2nd amendment rights should prevail.
