In 1996 there was a mass school shooting in Scotland, UK. By the following year, Parliament had banned private ownership of most handguns, as well as semi-automatic weapons, and required mandatory registration for shotgun owners. There have been no school shootings in the U.K since then…28 years later. Scotland still has people with mental health issues, kids still bully other kids in school, bad parenting still goes on, there’s social injustices etc. But what they don’t have is easy access to guns, and almost like magic, no mass shootings. If America can’t grasp that logic, I guess there’s always thoughts and prayers. RIP to all the kids that have lost their lives unnecessarily.

@@trappedinamerica7740 Every young, male shooter that has gone on a killing spree
in the United States also has a history of treatment with
psychotropic drugs… It was only after psychiatric medicine
started targeting young people with mind-altering medica-
tions that we witnessed this explosion in violence.”²
Another site contains an article with the headline, “Violence
in Schools? It’s the Prozac and Ritalin Stupid!”³ Yet another site
has an article titled, “Antidepressant Drugs Causing Epidemic of
Mania, Mayhem and Murder: America’s addiction to dangerous
’s hits crisis levels.” ( stands for Selective Serotonin
Reuptake Inhibitors, a class of antidepressant medications.)
The general argument is that in the last two decades the use
of psychiatric medications, particularly among young people,
has increased drastically, resulting in a dramatic increase in
youth violence, including school shootings. This view is ex-
      pressed by the following passage:
It is abundantly clear that the epidemic of craziness and
violence we are witnessing in America .

      .

      . is being fueled by
      dangerous psychotropic drugs .

      .

      . that are causing normally
sane people to fly off the hook and act out with insane acts
      of mania or violence.⁵
It is true that psychiatric medications, like all drugs, can have
side eects. I worked for over ten years in a psychiatric hospi-
tal for children and adolescents and have seen this rst-hand.
There were clients whose medications made them drowsy, gave
them tics, tremors, rashes, or weight-gain, or had other negative
eects. Medications can also have withdrawal eects, meaning
that people have adverse reactions when they stop taking the
medication, particularly if they stop suddenly.
What is the evidence supporting the link between psychiatric
drugs and school shootings? This article examines the issue
from two perspectives: the societal and the individual. The
societal perspective considers the overall claim that the rise in
medication use has caused a rise in violence, and the individual
perspective examines claims about specic shooters going on
      rampages due to medications.
      THE INCREASING USE OF
      PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATIONS
The use of psychiatric medications in this country has indeed
      increased signicantly since the 1980s. Between 1987 and 1996
the use of psycho-stimulants such as Ritalin increased nearly
four-fold and the use of antidepressants by adolescents ages 15 to
18 increased over four-fold. Similarly, there was a 75% increase
in the use of antidepressants from 1996 to 2005. There is no
question that the use of psychiatric medications has grown
substantially in the last twenty-ve years.
The problem with the argument blaming medications for
murder, however, is that though there has been a signicant
increase in the use of psychiatric medications, there has not
been a corresponding increase in violence. In fact, just the op-
      posite has

And rather than deal with the problem that the US is flooded with guns, not just AR guns, he wants to militarize schools. I guess that means we have to do it to malls as well. And gymnasiums and restaurants and basically everywhere because nowhere can be safe in Vance's vision of America without trained soldiers "protecting" everyone. The blatant disregard for human life makes me sick.
Americans have the right to life over the right to a well regulated militia. We have a well REGULATED militia. We don't need citizens to take up arms for our country, but they can join the forces if they desire. No where does the constitution say its OK to kill children, anyone, but especially children. In school no less!!!
Hold the parents accountable. In this case, like the Crumbly parents, are responsible. Especially the father. Why didnt Colt call or tell his Dad how he was feeling? Or did he?
Maybe the parents handing their kids access to gunz will take the well regulated part more seriously.
We must work towards common sense solutions. It should be multi layered.

Guess what? We haven't had a mass shooting in this country since. We took action after one school shooting, and so it baffles and infuriates me that it happens time after time after time in the US, obstinate Republican politicians beholden to the NRA refuse to carry out basic measures to protect people in the country. I admire Mr Guttenberg so much for the fact, that despite the unimaginable pain he suffered having lost his daughter to gun violence, a pain that no parent should ever have to go through, he is a relentless campaigner for gun safety. Having survived a sh00ting myself and having to recover and live with the injuries, and being that there was also a sh00ting back in '06 at my own high school, I can confirm that every new situation like this brings the survivors so much pain and a major increase in their PTSD symptoms, because you end up having a whole new level of empathy. No KID should have to experience being in fear for their lives, feeling like they're being hunted down, possibly getting wounded themselves, having to possibly see people they care about lose their lives, and then having to deal with the PTSD, survivors guilt, plus recovering from any physical wounds. It's a life sentence for anyone who goes through it. It CANNOT BE TOLERATED for it to be a "fact of life". Vance would probably feel a lot differently if it happened to him or his kids.

Thankfully there are others Canadians like myself who have not been brainwashed by the media, politicizing these tragic deaths for political gains right before the election. This man just twisted Vance's words and you just swallowed it, gullibly. Where did Vance say "we need to accept"? No matter how tough the law is there will always be Psychopaths. Just look at the states with red flag laws, there are still shootings. One option is to repeal the Second Amendment, good luck with that. A more sensible option like Vance said is to protect the schools. We do that for banks so we can invest that money for our children

My thanks to Mr. Guttenberg for speaking out. He knows the horrors of losing an innocent child to gun violence in school. We all need to listen to his message. We have 400 million guns (or more) in the US. That is crazy! We have a war right here on our own soil, but we don’t call it that.

Vance is nuts, security guards are not a guarantee against shootings at schools or anywhere else. Security guards respond only after the act happens. More guns are not the answer. Removing the AR15 style from the USA is the answer. The NRA wanted to give every teacher a gun. Can you imagine a 60-year-old teacher with a gun?

    • @arthurjamesaltmann729
      @arthurjamesaltmann729 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

and of course there is absolutely no chance that a student might get their hands on the gun--or that the teacher themself goes "postal" As usual the money made on guns by the manufacturers (wonder if they have a lobby? mmm) far outweighs any meaningful reform. Will never stop the demand for guns but you attack the supply. Make buying and owning weaponry so expensive that most folks wouldn't be able to afford them.

This kid's background checked every box on the "mentally disturbed, do not give them a firearm" criteria, but daddy being the fanatical rube that he is, felt that 2nd amendment rights should prevail.
