- BIG GUITAR AMPS ARE BACK, BABY! No I'm kidding but not really? I know I sorta change tune on this frequently but I've recently discovered some important things about myself that I think is important to share with the group; namely, how I feel about the size of my guitar amps. If we can't have fun with playing guitar what are we really doing here? That's what I'd like to discuss today and I hope you get something good from this little talk.

Hi there Spencer with Shreducation here. You’ve found me! I’ve been teaching guitar and playing live music for over 15 years, and as of Summer 2021 I now teach guitar over the internet!
I teach beginner to advanced students and everything in between. Some might say I’m mean… Some may even say I’m CRUEL… but hey LOOK, if we can’t make learning guitar fun and easy with a little light-hearted comedy on the way I don’t know how else we’re gonna get through it. It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll!
If you have any questions PLEASE ASK I’m an OPEN BOOK and am HERE TO HELP. Over the course of this channel I will be sharing my knowledge on all things guitar, gear, effects, songwriting, live performance, you name it. Let loose with the questions, if it’s a big topic I’ll make a video about it :)
My ultimate goal for my students is for that you never need me as a guitar teacher again, and that you never have to experience walking into a room with a bunch of musicians and feel dumb. Let’s make that happen starting today.
When i was in high school in the late 80s, a Crate half stack was the absolute MINIMUM that a 15 or 16 year old needed for his bedroom lol
I had 2 full crate stacks for a while. Then they sat in my shed for a decade as I bought a Marshal stack with some G12's in it that I can remember. Not sure anymore. They sounded great, so I never popped it open much. I also had this no brand oversized cabinet I wish I still had but my damn ferret burrowed into it and out of it through the speakers because stupid me wanted to make it a little lighter taking off its full sized metal grill. So that cabinet died. Then I downsized at age 45 to a Marshall 2x12 and stuck a V30 and a Creamback H in it. Sounds beautiful!
yeah and if you invited a date over you had to borrow your friends cab to make it a full stack or youd never get that second date
@@ShreducationNation the good ole days lol
I've never given up my amps and cabinets. They just have what is needed in many aspects. They sound great, they look great on stage, and you can give someone a job to set up the gear for you if you're too weak to do it yourself. People are missing out in this generation of what a concert meant to us back in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's....
Wow how did the algo not catch that blatant classic rock underscore. Hell yeah
i have a man on the inside. Al Gore
Did I see right? You put the head in the iso cab?
No, the cab went into an iso box, the TWO heads had their own custom ATA travel case :(
freakin' SICK Walsh guitar! I'm jealous! 😁
thank you this is currently my second favorite walsh
@@ShreducationNation oh really? Do you have a video about that guitar? I looked at your videos but didn't see anything on it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on your Walsh guitars! I'm seriously considering getting one.
first time viewer first time commenter - i clicked off when you said you recommended a fender blues jr. did you recommend what fire extinguisher you should keep on hand beside it? bye
Are you sure i recommend a blues jr? I own a pro jr and the description doesn't list the blues anywhere
@@ShreducationNation yes I'm sure - around the 30 second mark you state that you've previously recommended a Pro Jr. Blues Jr. & a Vox AC15 - I'm with you on the Vox but the other two are built like fire traps
@@dwaynejessome1728 awesome, I am looking forward to continuing this by telling you my personal experience, my work experience and hopefully (if you believe me) you will change your mind. I know none of this will happen but I'm still gonna do all of the above just for fun! So I own a Divided by 13 obvi, I own a handwired 57 Deluxe, I own a vintage 65 Princeton non-reverb, a 63 Champ, a Matchless, and a Victory Duchess. I've owned multiple Morgans, a bunch of other nice stuff. I have the purple "Plum Crazy" edition of the Pro Jr. I have used it for years and years for many gigs. I have replaced the speaker with a Warehouse Guitar Speakers ET-10 and I upgraded the tubes. It sounds great and it has been super super reliable. I bought it from a teacher at a school I managed for $125. Hell I actually used it the other day for a private party gig. The gig paid a lot more than I paid for the amp. Blues Jr, not my favorite but they are accessible and a fine start for most students in my opinion. I haven't heard of them combusting but I am definitely interested in hearing more!
love your take on it!!
thanks a lot!! I'm spending a lot of time with a Fender 57 Deluxe now, in a really cool Smoking Ace travel case thats made out of SKB material so its really lightweight but super durable. And it just really sounds great and sounds like what I want my guitar to sound like and it feels fun to have an amp and wheel it around again,.
Getting rid of a Matchless borders on unforgiveable.
I still have it! I just don't bring it everywhere to get destroyed
@@ShreducationNation Ok, I forgive you then! 😁
People should also consider running a stereo wet/dry/wet setup that uses at least 14 cables, has three combo amps (or head/cabinet pairs), and a giant pedal board. It gives you an opportunity to have as much bullshit as your drummer and gets you out of helping haul/set up their stuff. It also sounds 3% better to someone who knows what to listen for.
i endorse this message!
today i have a marshall 20w head with a oversized 1x12" (sized close to a 2x12) for bigger sounds an a laney cub cube for practicity and lower volumes
i love a laney
I remember that 2015 rig, it was impressive.
hahahah that is a really nice euphemism for "annoying"
The amplifier doesn’t make the guitar player. The guitar player makes the amplifier.
Only if you like soldering.
@@mooseymooseI see what you did there
@@mooseymoose hahahahaha
Actually, the manufacturer makes the amp and the amp makes noise if you plug n play it…
If you think a head and 2x12 is big… let me introduce you to 80’s peavey cabs where they literally made every configuration of speakers possible. Want 2 15’s and 2 12’s in a cab? There’s a peavey out there in someone’s garage. You want an 18, 15 and a 12 in a cab, there’s a model peavey made just for you… you want the giant speaker from dr browns garage from bttf? It’s probably a peavey scorpion speaker 😂
i recommend a marshall 1974x 1x12 combo with the matching 1x12 cab beneath at 8 ohms .it's only 18 watts, not heavy but has a big sound.
upgrades: speakers to fane or celestion alnicos, tubes to vintage mullards
enjoy!
this is great advice!!!! i like the Fane's a lot!
Feel matters because if the player can feel it then the audience can too.
Phones are getting smaller ?
Compared to a telephone booth?
Phones are getting bigger, again...🤔
all the better to view amps with my dear
If your running DI or FOH you can go the lunch box route. But if your an ally cat. Or strait up metal feind like me. There is no compromise for a certain fridge sized half stack.
You gotta have 100watts and 4 12s in an X pattern and 120 decibels....can't do that with a shoebox ....
Well, they say "2x12 is the new full stack bc you'll just mic into the house monitors......but, when a band is starting out, there's lots of bday parties , and friends houses, and "Jesse's dirt floor bar" ya know places that don't have house speakers really. I definitely recommend that every guitar player that's serious about being in a band atleast get a 4x12.
I appreciate your sentiment, but the logic of your first statement means a 1x12 would work just fine or even a 1x10 or if you really wanna go down the rabbit hole then even a Roland Cube 15 or just a Line 6 HX Stomp or whatever digital thing if its just gonna be DI'd or mic'd. I think a 2x12 at a house party not being mic'd would be fine and tbh whenever I bring my pro jr anywhere people make me turn it down cuz its loud as shit.
Cost seems like the hurdle to big more than anything else for most people, but also size and weight are factors.
I wanna push back on that a big, a lot of people get rid of big stuff allllllmost like getting rid of pianos? you're just downsizing cuz you dont want this huge shit anymore.
Since when is a 2x12 big amps? Sheeit, I've seen combos bigger than this. Turn that 2x12 into a 2x15 and throw a 4x12 on top, and then I'll be impressed.
well a 2x12 and a loud head is big for me considering I've spent the last like 5 years gigging with a 1x10.
