    Will's sword passed the kill test with a single hit, completely cutting the pig carcass in twine. Even though it broke on the strength test, the fact that he forged it by hand, with broken tools, and no advanced power equipment is a huge accomplishment in and of itself, and it still killed as impressively as Bobby's sword. @Noyce Gaming Stock removal is a perfectly valid way to make a knife, and even a sword. Albion makes them this way, Jay Fisher, John Lewis Jensen, and I think even Bob Loveless made them that way. They are regarded as some of the best in the industry. There's many ways to do it, and one way is not necessarily better than the other.

      @Cervando 5 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      @TheSkyWhale Hey Big Man, I know that. But cutting out steel is not forging, which is why I questioned the title. It would need to be hardened in a forge at least. Cutting out a shape and then sharpening the edge is not forging in fire. Cutting with water would be a more appropriate title in some cases.

      This question literally answered the question in my mind about this series for a long time now. Almost every blade in this series has been thin for something that you would expect to be used and abused. You would think some of them would make thicker and properly forged blades for the purpose. It reminds me of how the older Japanese swords made during the era when they were still often used to kill are apparently historically thicker than modern forged practice swords with an actual cutting edge. Perhaps they are now too overconfident in the better quality of steel they can use nowadays?

    It's great to see people finding interest in forging through this series, however, anyone wishing to learn this trade would be well advised NOT to follow what you are seeing on Forged in Fire as an accurate representation of proper forging procedures and practices. Having spent over 40 years as a trained Professional Smith ( retired), It's difficult for me to watch this show without noticing some serious errors in procedures that are fundamental to a properly forged piece of work. e.g no attention is given to stress relief, post forging, by way of normalizing and annealing, which should be done prior to a quench; this as well as over-heating carbon steels, uneven forging techniques leads to warping and cracking which we see often on the show. Omitting critical practices will only lead to immediate or eventual failures in a blade, which can lead to a serious injury. A good piece of reference material is an old book called " The Complete Bladesmith' by Jim Hrsoulas~Still available.

      @Dean McAndrew, you're very welcome Dean, any time! I still operate a forge from time to time, (coal), which by the way, is superior to propane in a number of ways, if you know how to use it properly, and not those dinky coal forges I've seen on the show. I built forged sculptures, and gates weighing over a ton, all with a coal forge and a large power-hammer, the one on the show is a toy by comparison. Here's a good example of what I was talking about earlier...In the 70s I would recondition jackhammer bits, sometimes up to 80 in a day, My rate of failure was typically 3 in 80. Another shop in the area was doing similar and was experiencing many failures. They ask me for an opinion and it was clear that after forging they were going straight to a quench to save time and they were breaking at the point in the bar, just above where the forging took place, resulting in natural stress point. The same holds true for forging any high carbon products, we also made a lot of stone tools.
      As well, you have to know the carbon content, and basic makeup of high carbons in order to know the heat tolerance. E.g, O1, popular tool steel will not tolerate forging above a bright red heat, and in the case of a knife should be evenly forged, not beat to death!
      Hamming below a certain heat will also result in a failure. Most high carbon steels are subject to this, so one must be careful and know your steels. 5160 ( spring steel) is a very forgiving mid-range steel that you can go a little higher, but better be careful with the higher end stuff like O1, Wi, W2, and others. O1 is oil-hardened steel, The (W series) is high-end water hardened steel, that in most cases is better hardened in Oil unless you really know what you're doing. Water steels can be hardened in Oil , while Oil steels can only be hardened in Oil. Cheers:)

      I can appreciate that. I have yet to find a TH-cam channel that really goes into the chemistry and physics of forging in any detail. I don't think people are coming here to really learn about the craft though. They are in love with the finished product, more than the painstaking process of producing it right. You have to know your stuff, and invest in the right stock steels to produce anything decent in 4 days. For example, it's only having to investigate using steel wire in jewellery that I discovered the vast range and different characteristics of the steels made. So I salute your lifetime of knowledge and skills you acquired throughout your career. Thank you for your insight.

    Rule of thumb I've learned from cases like this: If there's even a single crack you CAN see, there's always more that you CAN'T see. A band-aid on a small laceration won't help with the internal bleeding in other areas. Don't try to save a blade that has a visible crack, because it's the ones you didn't see and didn't expect that will ruin you.
