    Listen dude: I've never used a fountain pen and I have no plans to use one... but I'm watching your reviews. Because they are excelent pieces of media, your voice is nice, soft and well recorded and your transitions and video composition are great.
    So yeah, just wanted to say that. Excelent job.

      i do this same thing with Peter Draws even though i don't draw. you should actually get into fountain pens because they're loads of fun. they've only got a few day's learning curve and then it's just like using a normal pen

    Very clean video. Succinct and to the point. Not like the videos that waste a lot of time, don't stay on point, have extraneous background noise, wobbly cameras, don't get in tight for shots when needed, etc., etc. You know to what I am referring. We've all seen them.
    This was the first of your videos that I watched. Looking forward to watching others.
    Thank you for excellent quality in "fit and finish".

    I have small hands and this is absolute heaven to write with because of that - much better than any other fountain pen I’ve tried. I also love that it has the fine and extra-fine options, which is what I really need :)

    I'm looking to get another pen myself, and having looked at a LOT of pens, I'm kinda fixated on the 3776 Borgogne. I love the colour, and design, and have seen quite a few glowing reviews of it. I definitely think I've found my next pen.

    Great review, as always, thanks. I really like the colour of that body.
    The 3776 is a little thin for my giant paws, but I still find myself reaching for it again and again from my collection because the nib is so wonderful (mine is the medium), the size fits well in a suit pocket so I can always have it with me (important consideration for us besuited office workers), and it is big enough and light enough for longer writing sessions during meetings or workshops. The special editions are often very interesting (mine is the Shikkoku Aneitaketoraouzu). And the nib. Oh the nib. (sighs)
    They are really good pens. Thank you again for the review.

    I just bought a 3776 with an Ultra Fine Nib. It’s an exceptional nib for those who want a very fine nib. It’s smooth with a bit of feedback - which I like - but is not scratchy.

    One of my favorite pen designs, blows everything else out of the water for around $80 on Amazon. I have the UEF, SF, B, and C. I think the B is a little boring, more like a fatter western medium, but the C is a big honking double broad by any measure, perfect for custom grinds.
    The massive gold nib just dwarfs the sailor and pilot offerings in the price range. But platinum is asking way, way, way too much money in the US. This thing sells for eighty bucks in japan, with the Music nib coming in at 150.

    Lovely pen, almost bought one at the DC show but all I could find was the Chartres Blue or Black. I love the slightly dry flow of the music nib on this. I have other nibs of a similar ilk that are just plain garden hoses. Great review, thank you.

    Nibsmith, thank you for such an interesting video with history. I am back from a short hiatus using fountain pens. I have owned many ballpoints, rollerballs, mechanical pencils, and fountain pens. So, I went to my favorites, Cross Pens .I recently received my Cross Bailey Fountain pen. It is red lacquer with silver trim. It truly is a classic looking fountain pen. It has a nice grip for those who like a nice girth. The ink flows well from the nib (medium) and dry's really fast, before you finish the next word on the paper. For those of you who are first time users of FP's, will have to get used to writing with a fountain pen. It can be done with practice. The posting for this FP (Posting is when you put the cap on the back
    of the pen while you write, regardless of whether it pushes on or screws on with threads) is horrible. . It does not stay on and becomes loose and won't stay posted. I am an author and have owned and still own over 12 cross pens from ball points, roller ball,mechanical pencils, and fountain pens. I don't know why cross can't fix this. I did send it to their repair dep't. If it wasn't for the loose posting, this would be one classic fountain pen for the price and earn 5 stars. I hope Cross can fix this problem.I eagerly await the return of my fixed FP.

    • @sajjadhusain4146
      @sajjadhusain4146 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have two of these pens in medium and one C (double broad). The medium has definite, but very pleasant feedback. Not at all scratchy whatsoever. Very slightly ‘toothy’ if you’re very sensitive to that kind of thing. As for the F nib, I haven’t heard anybody yet complain about ‘scratchiness, only feedback. ’ This 14k nib is an absolute pleasure to write with, no kidding.

    I recently noticed that my #3776 Century seemed to have some ink trapped in between the white ring and the end of the grip where the nib begins. It shows pretty well since it's right underneath the resin and in front of the plastic white ring that separates the nib from the grip. I was wondering if you had any problems like this?

    Hey Dan. I've got two of these pens. One medium and one extra fine. What's your opinion on smoothing out the feedback on these nibs? Or is it a characteristic that should be enjoyed as is that distinguishes it from other manufacturers?

    I just can't get past the fact that it is a full plastic pen. So I go with the Waterman Carene which doubles the price. Wonderful writer and the best thing is it's metal!

    • @thenibsmith
      @thenibsmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      alan mail A majority of pens are made from mostly plastic. Metal doesn’t inherently make a pen better, especially when someone prefers a lighter pen.

    • @ZoneCrasher
      @ZoneCrasher 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know. That's why I don't understand what makes the pens so expensive. Even the ones with gold nibs have just $20 worth of gold in it. Metal at least feel expensive and more durable. Plastic would degrade overtime.

    Hello Nibsmith, platinum 3776,Waterman Perspective Black GT Fountain Pen which one of these two pens has very smoothest nib,there will be no skipping,no feedback. If these pens have these issues then kindly suggest a JAPANESE PEN in same price range which is devoid of these issues.

    • @thenibsmith

      Any pen purchased at nibsmith.com is eligible for free nib tuning and smoothing, so ANY pen can be smooth with no skipping. Pick the pen because you like the way it looks and feels. The nib can be adjusted to your preference.

      @@azylee I know this is an old old comment now, but while music nibs tend to have three tines, many only have the standard two (eg Sailor). A music nib is a broad stub nib with smooth edges, for producing thin and thick lines for music notation.

    I liked a friends Platinum 3776 (nib as adjusted by him) enough to order some of my own. As much as I really like the 3776's pen bodies, I absolutely hate the nibs on both of the pens I received. I had the medium worked on by Linda Kennedy of "Indy-Pen-Dance" with no improvement and find the "Soft Fine" on the second pen to be as unpleasant and unusable as the medium nib. Are Platinum nibs just not for me? Did I luck into 2 duds? Or are Platinum nibs unbelievably overrated? I don't know, but I'll certainly not spend my hard earned money on anything else from the brand given my experience so far. I say take the same money and buy yourself a truly excellent Japanese pen from Pilot.
