Corset Hoodie: Wearability, Tips & Tricks, and SEW-ALONG?!

  • Want to make a corset hoodie of your own? This is the video where I share some of the more mundane yet useful parts of the sewing process, for those of you who are interested in recreating this garment for yourself!
    Also, I’m travelling atm, and don’t have time to write a whole lengthy description, so here’s a cut-and-paste from the original video: Take that, Facebook: I'll make it myself! Cider's CORSET HOODIE ads have been popping up left and right in my targeted ads lately (if your algorithm is anything like mine, I am sure you can relate) and I was intrigued by the concept of combining fashion's least and most restrictive garments into one single item, so, well here we are.
    Now naturally I had to make my OWN corset hoodie, because why would I give Cider my money when I can make something of higher quality for faster than it'd take to ship to me?! So I start out by looking at what other corset hoodies are out there on the market, which elements I like and which I would rather leave on the cutting room floor (literally, lol) and then I proceed to sew this ridiculous piece of clothing from a combination of two FREE Mood patterns, which I will link below.
    What is the resulting garment? Is it historical clothing? Well, obviously not, although with the quasi click-baity title, just wait for all the Historical Costuming folks to jump in to point out that no, my corset hoodie is NOT historically accurate, which, like... duh? It's more along the lines of history-bounding inspired comfort clothing than it is actual historical costuming, although to be fair, I did bind the bottom edge AND floss my corset with a fairly traditional embroidery pattern, so like... 4% Historically Accurate?
    If YOU want to recreate your OWN corset hoodie, be sure to check out my Behind the Seams video for this project, I'll be sure to go over my thoughts on several... interesting... steps of the sewing journey, some tips and tricks, stuff like that which will hopefully make your own journey a bit smoother.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I mean, that's fair, for sure! If you can find a good deal on some fabric, so you're not sinking too much money on it, it could be a fun project to try your skills at! It's not THAT complicated, but also, you gotta know yourself and if you will enjoy the challenge, or get frustrated if you hit snags (plus, adding a zipper does definitely add another little step in there, and one which I won't be spending too much time on in the Sew-Along)

  • @TheMagnoliaWitch

    Sew-along for a corset hoodie? Absolutely! I will admit that when I make the hoodie for myself, I probably will leave that extra ease in the front above the cups just because with my measurements I'm going to need it. 😂 And I absolutely want to turn it into a dress, though perhaps not with sweatshirt fabric for the skirt. Maybe a Jersey knit, keeping with the soft and cozy theme but having it a bit lighter and more swooshy? We'll see what I have in my fabric stash!

    • @ShannonMakes

      Sounds like a great game plan! And better to have (possibly) too much fabric, because you can always trim it off later if it ends up being too baggy!

    Hey Shannon! The algorithm hit on your hoodie-video for me and I binged through your channel in the last week. I think you deserve way more subscribers, the quality of your videos is awesome! I’m a knitter, not a sewist, so my favourite was your knit vest, but I now want to know how to sew to make a) a Bilbo Baggins Housecoat and b) this hoodie. @@ShannonMakes I already watched the wartime knitting video! It was awesome, and also really interesting to see a part of the cultural memory from WWII. I‘m German, so our rememberance of wartime propaganda is way different. On a lighter note: the Corgi is called Watson, but also „the dog“ when talking about hin casually so he doesn’t get excited just because we said we still need dog food and - of course - everything that rhymes with it. Also „röggelchen“, german for „little bread roll“ - nobody remembers why :D

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I mean, half of Cannelle's nicknames are variations on pastries (little toaster strudel, croissant, etc), so.... I feel ya there. And yes, I can bet there was a whole different version of wartime propaganda on your end, I'd love to learn about it at some point, it must be quite interesting.

    Hi. A suggestion: If you don't need the width in the bust, you can slash to the seam line creating a triangle to give more width at bottom and not lengthen the shoulder seam.
    The sizing issues for the corset might come from the change in fabric. Your terry at 5% stretch compared to their t-shirting at 30-40%.
    Your finished sweater looks great and congratulations on working it through.- the tough ones are always great when you come out the otherside

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, their ribbed knit does definitely stretch more than my sweatshirt fleece, but even so, it does seem incredibly small… and short?! I have the worlds shortest torso and still had to add some height, so I think it’s a combo of fabric choice and pattern peculiarities!!

    I've had similar fit/lack of instruction issues with the Mood patterns before. But they're free, so I guess that's the trade 🤷‍♀️ I'm in for the sew along. What pattern did you use as a base for yardage?

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, exactly what I figured - free and fairly size inclusive, so I can't complain.... too much XD I did NOT use a pattern as a base for yardage, I just bought what looked right at the time... I'd say to look at the hoodie yardage and then add just a bit more for the back part of the corset bodice. And if you're planning on doing the inner and outer fabric of the SAME fabric, then add even a bit more again? Great question, sorry I have a crap answer for it atm!!

  • @erinrockwell8490
    @erinrockwell8490 ปีที่แล้ว

    3:35 Yeah I had issues with it fitting for a different mood pattern as well. I sewed one of their dress patterns and it did not claim to need a zipper but it most certainly does. It fits but is a bit tight and hard to get on. I did measure and round up just in case and yet still. I guess maybe it's just a common issue with their patterns? I don't know, it was my first time using one.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had someone who uses a lot of Mood patterns say that the quality of the patterns really depends heavily on who wrote it, because they have several people on their team who do patterns, and my friend even knows who's patterns she likes, and who's patterns she needs to be a bit wary/skeptical of!!

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I strongly think that you could, but it would probably have to be fairly big, and you might need to add a bit of extra fabric in the back, because the back part has two layers - the back of the corset AND the back of the sweatshirt panel (the “modesty panel” as it were), which might eat up too much fabric if you're only using a thrifted sweatshirt, but you could definitely find a way to be creative about it and do some piecing in a complimentary color!

    I really enjoyed this, and your other ‘corset’ video, count me in for the sewalong! For the lacing, is there any reason why you wouldn’t use non elasticated laces? I know I won’t be tight lacing the corset part, but it seems like maybe you wouldn’t get as much hold with elastic.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the elastic allows me to slip it on over my head and not need to adjust the laces afterwards. If it was non-elastic lace, I'd need to keep them very loose to get them on, and then retighten them after was all settled on my body, and that's more work than I'm looking for in a hoodie!!

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't tend to wash my hoodies very often, which definitely factored into my thought process in the construction, but I am in fact planning on washing it with the boning in there - it IS just plastic after all, so it shouldn't damage the boning. And the flossing should help hold it in place so it doesn't wiggle around and damage the fabric. BUT I am planning on putting it in one of those mesh bags for protection in the wash, plus I air dry most of my clothing anyways, so it won't go through the dryer!
