Recreating Cider’s Corset Hoodie But *HiStOriCaLLy aCcUrAte* (from FREE patterns)

  • Take that, Facebook: I'll make it myself! Cider's CORSET HOODIE ads have been popping up left and right in my targeted ads lately (if your algorithm is anything like mine, I am sure you can relate) and I was intrigued by the concept of combining fashion's least and most restrictive garments into one single item, so, well here we are.
    Now naturally I had to make my OWN corset hoodie, because why would I give Cider my money when I can make something of higher quality for faster than it'd take to ship to me?! So I start out by looking at what other corset hoodies are out there on the market, which elements I like and which I would rather leave on the cutting room floor (literally, lol) and then I proceed to sew this ridiculous piece of clothing from a combination of two FREE Mood patterns, which I will link below.
    What is the resulting garment? Is it historical clothing? Well, obviously not, although with the quasi click-baity title, just wait for all the Historical Costuming folks to jump in to point out that no, my corset hoodie is NOT historically accurate, which, like... duh? It's more along the lines of history-bounding inspired comfort clothing than it is actual historical costuming, although to be fair, I did bind the bottom edge AND floss my corset with a fairly traditional embroidery pattern, so like... 4% Historically Accurate?
    If YOU want to recreate your OWN corset hoodie, be sure to check out my Behind the Seams video for this project, I'll be sure to go over my thoughts on several... interesting... steps of the sewing journey, some tips and tricks, stuff like that which will hopefully make your own journey a bit smoother.

    This looks so good! * ___ * I recently made a Edwardian princess skirt (pattern Truly Victorian) and now I can't help but think how to combine the pattern for that skirt with this hoodie, given it also features boning to hold up the part above the waist more nicely ^^
    Extra warm winter dress with lots of swoosh and a hoodie ?! YES!

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      haha, it's funny because I chose that lining color (bright red versus a more cranberry option I had) because I don't particularly like fire engine red!! 🤣🤣However I also agree that it would look nice on the inside of the hoodie, just maybe not quite in line with my own personal aesthetic!

      i'm a teenager and my mom taught me how to sew when i was maybe 3 or 4 but i've never made anything as cool as this. when i was 6 my mom and i made a dress for me. i made a small blanket (the first project i worked on by myself i think, i was around 4 probably?) and i would bring it to school when i was around 10 to use as a "tablecloth" to not get our precious animal erasers dirty. i left the blanket there one day because eraser trading was still going on and i haven't seen it since. oops.

    This is so cute. I am wondering how silly I might look in one at my age, but then again, I could make one for the granddaughters? Cannelle looks so happy, I love how she smiles, even with a stick in her mouth, running in the snow.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I definitely think that this works with any age; that is to say, if you feel great, I think you look great (and those who might want to judge don't deserve your attention anyways)!
      IF you're still questioning the decision, thought, you can always make it slightly less "in-your-face-CORSET"...Don't floss it. Or floss it, but don't add bones. Consider cording instead of boning, for a softer look (honestly, mine was wearable even without boning). Do the zippered version instead of the version with laces in the back.
      OR MAKE MATCHING ONES FOR YOU AND YOUR GRANDDAUGHTERS BECAUSE THAT'D BE THE CUTEST THING EVER! (ok, I'll stop exclaiming now) :-D

    While obviously it would've been preferable not to have the "Oh dear god no ;_;" moment in the project it's also great because it provoked that moment where one starts trusting oneself as opposed to trying to trust someone else's pattern. I could see the way the first iteration was going and was a little worried but once that sewing-phoenix-moment emerged it was amazing, seriously well done! ❤‍🔥

    I think using a thinner fabric, making the top half oversized instead of longer, and adding back the zipper(at least at the top) would've given you the look you were going for.

      @@ShannonMakes I want several more thing of cozy hoodie fabric in my fall/winter/spring wardrobe, It's not the easiest thing to pull off without looking frumpy, as much as I love my Dad's old firehouse work shirts. This solves that problem. Now now the only problems I have is a lack of overlock machine or access to good quality fleecy hoodie fabric in my aria, but that will come when it will.
      Ps. I accidentally turned my whole wardrobe into a Hobbity wardrobe. Or at least I'm working on it, I haven't had any time to sew this summer/fall. But I have collected the fabric for it.
