      Oh wow, that's one of the most heart-warming and constructive comments I've gotton recently, so thank you!!! It was not necessarily meant to be a tutorial (although it could certainly serve as a visual aid to the process), but if it helps you figure out some steps of the process, I'm glad!!

    Thank you for including a time stamp to skip the holiday traditions section. Your consideration is noted and appreciated. I'm one of those people for whom the holidays are "iffy". But cultivating traditions that evoke fond memories and evolve to meet the needs and wants of those involved - is certainly the way to go.
    CW: The rest is about food, and dirt. Except not really the dirt part.
    My family tradition is shortbread. Including yearly jokes (and some that weren't actually joking) about it tasting the way it did because my Dad's hands are filthy. He's a (now retired) diesel truck mechanic. And other than the year he was off work for 6 weeks recovering from surgery, the cracks in his hands, held the stains. They're stains. They're not coming out in the cookies. But hey, if some people can't handle that, more cookies for the rest of us.
    One year, after I moved out, I made the cookies at my place. I was working in renovations and the week I did the baking, I'd been doing caulking and painting. My nails were crusted with oil paint, as it's not worth getting out the chemicals to remove the oil paint, only to add more the next day. But I had of course, cleaned my hands fully the weekend I baked.
    The cookies tasted different that year. And of course the jokes flew that my Dad hadn't imbued them with diesel. I ran with it and informed them that no, this year they were imbued with oil paint.
    Thing is, they actually did taste different. And I only realized it the next year.
    My partner talked me into buying unsalted butter. Because it MUST be unsalted butter for baking. And I took their word for it.
    My family uses salted butter. Always has. That's why there's no salt in the recipe.
    Also family dinner is lasagna. Because when we re-made our traditions, there was no sense in cooking a bird, and sides none of us enjoy all that much. And we all very much enjoy lasagna - we all make it differently, but we can each make an enjoyable one. So it can be made by whoever has the time and energy that year.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LOVE IT!! And we fully run by the "can't handle the thought of germs? Well all the more dessert for us" motto too, in my household too. If it doesn't wash off in the sink, then it's not gonna come off in the cookies (also, a little dirt and grime never killed anyone).
      10/10 for making holiday dinners and traditions your own, rather than sticking with "the norm" just because it's "the norm" ...I personally love bird, but we used to get wild goose that my grandfather shot with his friends. Except then we all had to watch out for left over bits of metal from the bullets... 😳 These days, we just do a nice chicken marsala recipe because my grandfather's no longer with us, and it's just as tasty and everyone loves it!

    I laughed out loud when you did that spin, it was so funny, and you looked like you were really enjoying it. I'm a professional pet sitter, so my holiday tradition is to work on Christmas day. Here's hoping you and yours have a safe and fun holiday season. 🎅 🎄 🎁

    Happy Holidays! What a beautiful dress and Blouse, suits you great!
    Because you ask about traditions: I dont like baking cookies but I make crunchy chocolate crisps every year to gift them to my loved ones. I started about 20 years ago, didnt do it one year because I thought they all were bored by getting the same every year, but everyone was so sad that I now make sure I make them xD.
    If I have the spoons I craft boxes or bags to wrap them too.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why thank you 😊 That's such a fun story about the crisps, and so fulfilling to see that, in fact, everybody loves them and has added receiving them to *their* list of holiday traditions!! (and yes, I also usually have lofty goals to make my presents pretty, but don't always manage to follow through

    Making little iced gingerbread goats and pigs is my family baking tradition. Though the cookies have to be allowed to cure at least a week for best flavor, which was torture on us as kids.

      Oh yea, I could *absolutely* see that! What an interesting recipe though, I’ve never heard of curing gingerbread for a week! 🎄🍪🎅

    There were several hacks in here that I think will be useful, the cardboard pressing trick for curved seams in particular. You look very festive! Thank you for sharing.
    I don’t celebrate Christmas, but my sister and I are slowly building up new traditions now we’ve the freedom to do so. Last season we burned a log with little notes of the things we were grateful for with oranges, pine cones, and cinnamon. While we shared hot cider, and toasty blankets of course.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, that sounds absolutely lovely, and like it smells delicious too!! (and somehow simultaneously reminds me of burning my notebooks with my friends at the end of the school year 🤣🤣🔥).
      I don't celebrate Christmas religiously --much to my grandparents' chagrin 🙄-- but we enjoy the non-religious aspects of the holiday. Or we take similar traditions and celebrate but without the Christian aspect? I don't know how to say it, because I know that some people see it as literally impossible to separate Christmas from Christianity, but all I know is that I enjoy time with my parents, baking, listening to fun, wintery music, filling the house with the smell of pine trees, and opening presents on the 25th, and Jesus has nothing to do with any of it!

    • @tiffanytomasino335
      @tiffanytomasino335 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShannonMakes the only thing that matters is your interpretation. Jesus actually had nothing to do with it in the first place. It was an appropriation of many other religions end of year celebrations. So enjoy it as Winter Festivity and let the others with their own. That’s how I see it at least. Thank you for your kind comments and also the shared pyromania 😂 I prefer burning tress to decorating

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha, so very true (I should clarify: the "hahah" was still me laughing from the pyromania comment🤣🔥) Winter Festivity indeed!!
      Actually the city my parents live in (Saint Paul) has the oldest winter festival in the United States... the story goes that several Eastern newspaper correspondents kindled the start of the carnival by visiting in the fall of 1885, and returning home to report that the whole state was "another Siberia and unfit for human habitation"
      So in retaliation, a group of business owners created a wintertime festival which would showcase all the beauty of Minnesota winters, and they actually worked with the City of Montreal to figure it out, because we already had a winter carnival running at that time!! So winter festivities is very much in line with many aspects of my life!

    Shannon! I am rewatching this, following your work in progress (and the results) is always such a joy! My grandmother (german: Omi) and my aunt taught me how to sew and their clothes were almost all handsewn, so were my childhood clothings. They mean so much to me and i still keep a lot of them and I sometimes gift special items to my friends kids- they love them. Also I love your awareness of the impact of fast fashion an giving a really inspiring advice of using scraps and buying everything second hand or altering older pieces. So good! Thank you very much for sharing❤ have a very happy most beautiful time of the year! Live from Germany, Veronika

      Oh, I am usually a huge fan of Tetris - I LOVE to eek out every little spare scrap of fabric, and I'm usually quite good at it, but standing one legged is quite tiresome on my good leg/hip, and it was a smidge too large of a pattern to be crawling around on the floor either, so in this case, I made an exception ;-)

I am also supposed to be keeping it elevated as much as possible -- and am generally doing so off-camera -- but fortunately at this point, I'm a month out from the moment of injury, so I have a bit of leeway in what all I can do with it. • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I will go digging for that recipe...it's basically corn syrup, sugar and water boiled and added to fluffed egg whites, and the trick is to add it to cookies that aren't particularly sweet by themselves, otherwise it gets (IMO) a bit overwhelming. Very Christmas-y outfit. Love it.
    Our Christmas tradition, or at least one of them, is to open one gift on Christmas Eve together. We used to do this when we got back from midnight mass but I've not attended the last few years so now we just exchange a gift whenever we're all in the kitchen having a nightcap before bed.
    Hope you have a great holiday and mind the foot. 😁🎄

    • @ShannonMakes

      Ooooh, we added that tradition to our Christmas too, when I was maybe 8 or 9, and had argued that the children in A Christmas Carol get to open their presents on Christmas Eve, and so shouldn't we also get to open *at least one* then too?! The argument worked, since we still do it to this day (1 small-ish gift each), which means that you and I both will be opening something fun tonight!! 🎄🎄Hope it's a good one (maybe wool, and not just in the form of socks?!)

While this could be normal in the north, or in desert country, I live on the South West Coast! My Christmas will consist of cold salads and meats, eaten inside with the air conditioner on!
    Also, I too have been known to deliberately stab myself and press a finger to an inside seam, to make sure I bleed on my clothes and costumes.

    as a thought depending on how comfortable you are using a sewing machine holding the fabric with only one hand, you could use your right hand as if you would for a crank machine, if you go slowly, then feed the fabric in with your left hand. This might help you if your ankle doesn't want to do any sewing on a day you really want to.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good thought. I also DO have a hand-crank machine that I have been meaning to start tinkering with, and perhaps this is the moment! All things considered, though, I'm pleasantly surprised how well my left foot handled the pedal 😃

      Thank you, will do! It's super comfortable and has a very lovely weight and drape for the skirt!

    The corgi excited dance while waiting for you to throw, tho! So cute! This looks lovely and your instructions are clear and funny (and I'm glad you kept that broken foot elevated xD). This style isn't the most friendly for plus size people like me, but I'm already brainstorming how to change it, or maybe combining the upper part of this dress (cause it's so cute) with a different skirt 🤔
    Oh, and your subtitles are hilarious, Thank you for those!
    As for holiday traditions, I celebrate Christmas in the southern hemisphere, so we do a late dinner on Christmas eve (usually some sort of BBQ) and exchange gifts then. Christmas day is a little less established. My great grandmother used to do a TON of many types of cookies for Christmas, she spent basically the whole month baking. She passed some years ago, and no one has even tried to bake as much, but we still do at least some cookies each year.
    Hope this year's Christmas is better without a broken foot! 🎄

      Yes, the tippy-tappy toes are absolutely the best!!! I'm glad you enjoyed this video and perhaps found some inspiration for modifying this pattern into a garment that you will feel comfortable and beautiful in!! I do think that the top could be hacked off around the waist and a different skirt put on fairly easily, and it'd avoid some of the funky pleating.
      I don't know if this style would be what you're looking for, but if you do switch out the skirt, you could also consider (because that would get eliminate of the bottom V portion that mirrors the V-neck) making a self-fabric belt that has a slight V shape (I'm inspired a bit by the Edwardian dip waist belts here), and that way you can have a different skirt but also maybe have the mirrored V's?? I dunno, maybe that's not the style you're going for, so feel free to disregard, just a random thought!
      I'm glad you enjoy the subtitles, I do try to take the time to at least correct/tweak the auto-generated ones, because they're so crap, and when I can find time to add in my own little touches I do... although admittedly sometimes videos fall through the cracks and I forget 😢😢 Thanks for watching!!

    I wish I saw this video before I started making this dress! I fried a few brain cells trying to figure everything out 😂😂 yours looks so much better than mine though. I added a patch pocket to the skirt and then a side seam pocket as well. Though as a new sewer I did make the mistake of opting for French seams

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh no, sorry for your brain cells!! I did consider adding a pocket as well, but this fabric would just sag too much under the weight of pocket contents unless I added a belt or waistband (which I *also* thought about adding, but alas... time constraints).
      I feel like French seams could be great for a few seams (the main side and back ones, for example) and less than ideal for others (anything that intercepts the neckline or pleats), but massive props to you for attempting them as a novice sewer 💪💪

    You cut your knotches in? You might run into a problem down the road if you want to let out a seam( make bigger) there would be a hole . I loved the garments and they looked great on you! Enjoyed hearing your cookies tradition too 💝

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, I'm just entirely too lazy to cut the notches in. Honestly, I've been wearing the same size for the past 20 years, so generally speaking my taste in clothing changes faster than my body size (or the fabric just plain wears out), but if I needed to make larger, it'd just require some creative piecing! Thanks for watching

    Late best of the season to you. That is a lovely set - well done.
    Love your spin test. My only trick for the spins is to do one rotation in the other direction to stop the fluid in my ear to stop swishing about.

      Yes, the classic spin/un-spin often does the job! I generally spin for a living, so it's not usually a problem, but since I hadn't been spinning (or honestly even walking much) for the month prior to filming, my tolerance for it had significantly decreased!! Funny how fast the tolerance fades XD
