    Wow! This deserved millions of views, but YT doesn't reward useful information. Very well done. Your views would increase if you clickbaited a bit. Try words like monolithic, ancient, granite, limestone, Egyptians, Peruvian, giant, aliens (yea, I know - but it sometimes works extremely well) etc... And you should get more views from the archeology ancient building channels. They are always looking for answers to large stonecutting and transportation, but lack a creative stonecutters knowledge.
    Especially, if you do a "Daily Dose Of Internet" logo and send him a link of his logo out of granite, and offer to send it to him. Seriously, your channel deserves much more views, because your content is solid (literally and figuratively). The fact that you didn't go the route of scrapping the existing motors for robotic servos, with the encoders built in, is noteworthy.

    Hi Greg,
    Just wondering how the saw moves up and down? Looking to build one myself for my sandstone business here in Australia.
    Would love more info on up and down travel
    Cheers

      Hi, if you watch at 4:25 on I show the winch. Basically there are two cables, one wrapped around the bottom of the drum, one around the top, so that drum turns both cables, so both will retract (or extend) at the same time. Those cables come out, then turn 90 degrees over a pulley at the top of the frame. The cable then goes down and around a pulley on the carriage, then comes back up and attaches just below the first pulley. So that as the cable is retracted the carriage moves up. May help to draw it out. However after having said all that, instead of using a pulley design your best bet is to look for a used automotive hoist made by either Hofmann or Ravaglioli that use a large threaded rod to move up and down. Use that as the base for your saw. Much easier to control accurately. Alternatively you can buy a complete saw from China rather inexpensively (~25kUS). Check out @vicrockwork, @pyreneesquarries, @australianoutbackmining on instagram. All of them are in Australia and run Chinese saws. vicrockwork will probably be the most willing to offer advice. Other ideas of building a saw include using an old hoist mechanism from a forklift, if you want to go CNC probably not the way to go, if you want to just cut slabs then will work perfectly fine. If you end up building feel free to contact me, greg9504@gmail.com good luck!

    Are the drive pulley smooth? What holds the wire? What HP motor do you use?

    • @GregsStoneYard
      @GregsStoneYard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pulleys have a grove in them and are lined with flat strips of either 40mmx8mm or 42mmx8mm polyurethane with a shore durometer of 75A. The wire is held by the tension in the groves. My saw is 10 hp.

    Certainly impressive. Most of the technology is over my head though, I'm feeling old now. Much prefer the hands-on manual operating of my machine, I need to see and feel what is happening.
    Circular blades have the similar problem of 'popping out' when coming to an edge on an oblique angle, can be a real pain in the arse at times.

    • @GregsStoneYard
      @GregsStoneYard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Geoff, Thanks. Yes I can the appeal of the manual approach. There's not much 'feel' to the diamond wire as it's like cutting with a rubber band. I'm sure you could figure out the CNC part, if you had to.

    • @winkieg1
      @winkieg1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GregsStoneYard I had thought of using a plc to control and interlock the various components of my saw, (I've got boxes of them from work), I would have needed to engage someone to set it up though. Fear of troubleshooting problems when glitches occur had me wiring up the incredible mess of relays and contactors instead though. I'll email you a pic.

    • @GregsStoneYard
      @GregsStoneYard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@winkieg1 With what you have accomplished to this point I'd say just keep using what you are using, because it's clearly working! Although with a good manual for the PLC I'm sure you could work it out. But again, unless it's the type of work that interests you there's probably something else you'd rather work on and I completely understand why.

    Is the wire configured as a bonded loop like a band saw blade (and if so, how were the wire ends joined) or is it just a long wire? If a long wire, it must reciprocate somehow?

    • @GregsStoneYard
      @GregsStoneYard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Paul, The easiest way to build one is to find an old automotive hoist, ideally the type made by Hofmann that use a large threaded rod to lift (same type I used to move the cart). Although the type that use cables and hydraulic cylinders can be made to work. The hoist with the threaded rod will be easier to control the speed on. Typically you can find these used for $500 and up, new hydraulic lifts are around $2-3kUSD. This gives you a way to raise lower that is rated for way more than you need to worry about. Then you can build a carriage to raise/lower that has the wheels on. The 5' (1550mm) wheels can be purchased from China for around $800 each, or use 4 smaller wheels (800mm), cost will be similar for 4. I'd say $5k USD would be a healthy budget. Lower if you are good at finding deals. For my CNC one, with the cart, new 5' wheels, motors, sensors etc I probably have closer to $15k in it. I've never added it all up :) Hope that helps, if you have specific questions just ask.

      Do you want to do CNC or just cut slabs? Do you want to buy a ready made saw or build your own? Build your own? I've seen saws made with trailer wheels to run the wire on and either an old forklift mast or car hoist to move up and down. Saw few thousand dollars. Buy? From China CNC for $30kUS plus shipping/install. Buy non CNC from US $50k and up. Buy CNC from Italy over $100K and up.

      I haven't operated a Chinese one, but the few who own one and I interact with on Instagram are pleased with them. Try either Hercules Abrasives or Xinda. I purchased my large 5' from Hercules, but they sell complete saws. I think shipping right now is bit crazy though.

      Ojalá entienda tu pregunta. La velocidad del cable es de 24 a 25 metros por segundo. La velocidad de avance (velocidad de desplazamiento) varía con el ancho de la piedra. Para piedra de 1,2 metros de ancho, aproximadamente 25 mm por minuto. Si la piedra es dura, es posible que deba ir más despacio. Espero que esto ayude.

      Hi Paul. Sorry I missed these comments. For some reason TH-cam didn't notify me. Anyway cost of wire: For wire made by www.diamant-boart.com/ it is $57US/Meter, this wire is distributed by www.husqvarnacp.com/ , so you have a local sales person. You can get cheaper Chinese wire for about $35-45US /meter. My saw requires 15meters. No generator. I just have 100 Amp 240 v single phase service to my workshop (just regular home electric service). I use a transformer to step up to 600 volts for the main motor. The main motor is 3 phase, I run it off of single phase by using a VFD.
