Hey Steve. Thanks again for helping me out with your thoughts. I am so happy that this works now. I even had the nerves to film the process... :) It turned out that the diameter of the top wheels was too small. This caused the crimped section of the wire to bend too much and slowly broke up the individual metal strands. Anyway... It is all up and running now.

I would like to see a close up of the wire saw with a description of which harder material is used and how it is integrated with the wire to cut the granite or basalt stone? It is about 7 on the Mohs-scale I guess. Also I would like to know about the actual speed at which the saw can be advanced through a given square unit at a hardness of 7 without breaking? - plus, how long time the wire saw can work continuously with the shown cooling without being worn down? Further, how wide is the cut relative to the diameter of the wire, and not least - how did you get rid of the last piece of stone that broke off due to the tension you applied from the top? Finally I would have liked to see you put a straight tool against the cut to show the flatness immediately after the cut. I am asking all these questions motivated by the ongoing discussion raised by the established scientists in history who claim that such cuts could be made in ancient time using cobber or bronze chisels.

And nobody has yet demonstrated a way to cut and polish granite with a precision as we can observe it done in e.g. the boxes in Serapeum in Egypt - AND with the claimed tools for the historical period.
Looks great. You could probably modify your machine to cut same rock in 1/2 the time if you cut from both sides simultaneously, but if you 'r not in a pinch what you have is great as is.

The two top wheels need a diameter of at least 480mm. Don't go smaller because the stronger the curvature is the more your wire will fray at the part where it is crimped. I learned this the hard way and it took me a long time to find out. The two bottom wheels got a diameter of 700. The friction is measured by an anmeter with a relay switch that is connected to the motor that runs the wire.

Hi Joe. The cheapest stationary wire saw will be around USD 20,000 if you buy it from China. The parts I used were around $3000 plus a lot of my time. What I want to say is that it depends on your own calculation. You will have to have good welding skills and a basic understanding of electrics.

I am interested in buying a small rock saw. Wondering if you would know about them. It’s a 16” Covington saw. Is it a good brand name for a green horn. I have no experience but I will learn probably the hard way. Just looking for some advice.
Covington does have a good reputation. Does this mean you are buying a circular bladed saw? I don't think they make a small wire saw. Are you sawing slabs for cabbing, or for what other use? I think the circular blades in the lower horse powers are more accurate (saw a more consistent slab thickness) than a wire saw, unless you get into the expensive wire saws used for sawing high quality quartz for electronics. For a 16" saw, (cuts less than 8" thick material) you might consider modifying a simple band saw (14" band saw plus 6" or higher riser block inserted in column) You can then buy custom length band saw blades, use sealed bearings, add a coolant system and add a carriage for the table with counterweight for automatic feeding, and so on. Ukam might have blades for you. You might look into a horizontal wood band saw, used, or a kit, or homemade as seen on TH-cam, and modify it with blade and new bearings, and so on, depending on what you are doing. I hope that helps! BTW I think Covington sells kits of a husk or mandrel for a circular saw set up to save you some money. Good luck with it, and I hope you find success at it!
band saw blades are much thinner than a common segmented wire saw, so if your material is expensive (like semi-precious stone), you will get higher yields with a thinner blade (circular or band saw) Depending on the stone, you might also try a wire saw and add loose cutting grit like corundum, instead of diamond segments.
Any idea how you would cut 2 foot circles in large boulders? Approximately 2 to 3 feet(1 meter)thick granite rocks and holes are about 2 foot(60 centimeters in diameter)

I think you need something like a two or three motor sphere machine or gear motors which use cups and loose abrasive, or scintered diamond cups or core drills. Look up 'sphere machine' on here, and also try Covington Engineering. I saw a cheap homemade set-up on here years ago.Now there are more! Try this one: th-cam.com/video/9GK5eFOgOWs/w-d-xo.html these are for spheres, and will polish to a shiny finish. not sure yet how to get the ellipse geometry of an egg, those that information exists, and is not terribly hard to find I imagine.

The big issue I have in planning to cut stone is how to deal with all the water and slurry.
Dry it. The water is gone and you are left with rock dust which you can sell to organic farmers.

Hi Daryl. I don't think it matters much if it is single or 3 phase motor as long as it has around 10 hp.

I think the circular blades in the lower horse powers are more accurate (saw a more consistent slab thickness) than a wire saw, unless you get into the expensive wire saws used for sawing high quality quartz for electronics. For a 16" saw, (cuts less than 8" thick material) you might consider modifying a simple band saw (14" band saw plus 6" or higher riser block inserted in column) You can then buy custom length band saw blades, use sealed bearings, add a coolant system and add a carriage for the table with counterweight for automatic feeding, and so on. Ukam might have blades for you. You might look into a horizontal wood band saw, used, or a kit, or homemade as seen on TH-cam, and modify it with blade and new bearings, and so on, depending on what you are doing. I hope that helps! BTW I think Covington sells kits of a husk or mandrel for a circular saw set up to save you some money. Good luck with it, and I hope you find success at it!
band saw blades are much thinner than a common segmented wire saw, so if your material is expensive (like semi-precious stone), you will get higher yields with a thinner blade (circular or band saw) Depending on the stone, you might also try a wire saw and add loose cutting grit like corundum, instead of diamond segments.

I think you need something like a two or three motor sphere machine or gear motors which use cups and loose abrasive, or scintered diamond cups or core drills. Look up 'sphere machine' on here, and also try Covington Engineering. I saw a cheap homemade set-up on here years ago.Now there are more! Try this one: th-cam.com/video/9GK5eFOgOWs/w-d-xo.html these are for spheres, and will polish to a shiny finish. not sure yet how to get the ellipse geometry of an egg, those that information exists, and is not terribly hard to find I imagine.
Yeah, to tell you the truth I hate cutting cold butter. Even your sharpest knife takes 3 hands. 1 to hold the butter, 2 to press really hard
