yeah they can be. however i dont think they are supposed to determine ones strength with the functions but rather the priority in which we place the functions, which incidentally often times correlates with proficiency in their usage but this isnt always the case.

Very helpful. I'd been borderline distrustful of MBTI, but knowing that Ne is a demon to the INTP makes everything seem like it could finally fit together. I do, quite automatically, use my Ne a lot, but the process of it feels very turbulent, unsettling and, sometimes, even distracting. It's not until I can narrow down the options and envision them coming together with my Ti logical framewok that I actually feel at peace, and even then, only until some future situation arises which might shake this structure, rendering me extremely uneasy until I'm done going over the painful process of taking everything apart and reconsidering.

      Ne example:
You have too write an essay, you need an interesting subject. You pick the first subjects out the top of your head. You know a lot about it, and your mind starts racing to create a framework. In your head you start to collect and connect all the data available in that big mellon. Open to all possibilities and corners of the imagination, you turn the data around inside your mind, like a giant puzzle, looking if something fits.
Suddenly you think of an unrelated subject you always wanted too write about. Excited you come up with three more subcategories. Which shall you pick? You go wild, your brain is going 200 mph, you noticed a pattern, these subjects could be written into one single master piece. They are interconnected , you notice the pattern crearly.
You start checking your framework for logic fallacies, sadly your theory collapsed like a house of cards. You must start all over again, but get side tracked with unrelated stuff. Before you know it two hours have passed. The subject your thinking of, ain't even closely related with what you've started with.
Unsadisfied, you give in. You decide to Ti the first subject and finish it in 20 min sharp, and be done with it.
      Sounds fimiliar?

I gather gather gather facts but dump them as soon as I figure out what pattern they work in. Most facts just get lost with all short-term memory, except the few keystone ones. But do I gather gather gather? definitely. I just don't save. I have no idea what that means about my functional system, but it is definitely my life. details plug into T to make N patterns and then, like wrapping paper on gifts, get discarded. Don't ask me to defend my N patterns using real facts. Just give me facts as examples and I will tell you the pattern they fit. All facts fit a pattern, pretty much. Just a matter of which pattern. The FUN facts are the ones which do not fit a pattern yet. They are a puzzle to solve (yay!). Oh, and sorry, I already forgot your name, but I will never forget YOU.

Here's a test I did on myself (ESTP). Take a walk in an interesting place you are not familiar with. Has to be a new place, because a familiar place will probably get you dropping into Ti because a it will not be stimulating enough.
Observe and turn off the internal chatter. When you look at building say, what strikes you? Do you perceive it shape, mass, color, shadows? Or do you sense other things, like it's function, who works there, what do they do, etc?
What you are doing here is trying to discern is if your perception is mainly photographic or impressionistic, and how consistently it stays that way. Try to think up other experiments to test this. Have fun with it.

Hello brother, INTP here. I have been going through a existential crisis in the last couple of years, so I know very well how this nihilism feels and how poisonous it can really be. I would love to talk to your friend, I believe I can help him. Please send me a private message and we can talk more in depth about it, but basically this is what I think:
My Experience with nihilism came from not understanding my goal in life, what mission do I have to accomplish in this world and for what purpose. It also came from questioning if there is in fact, such a thing as being able to really "know" something. The cure for all that ? Two things: For the problem with my objective, I had to really dig deep into my soul for months to realize that what I really felt like it was my lifes purpose is to do Philosophy and to show people a pathway to truth and enlightment. Philosophy is the search for truth, and it also is the cure for the second problem, wich says if there is really something we can know for sure. We INTPs are truth seekers, and if we do not activelly engage in this activity, we get depressed. I would tell your friend to engage with himself, and look for his deepest motivations, wich I believe this Nihilism is already a sign, and I also believe he will come to a similar conclusion that I came, namelly: WE HAVE TO SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH, TILL THE DAY WE DIE, OR WE ARE USELESS IN THIS WORLD.
Sorry for my not so good english.
      Cheers.

Mystery223Guy Hi, and thanks for asking. I'm an INTJ. I thought if I'd act like an ESTP it'll be great for social events like partying. Maybe not all the time like an ESTP but only for social situations
