I couldn't remember the name of this film for years, genuinely 20+ years aswell for myself since I watched it still comedy gold.
All I could think of is , "come and knock on my door". I asked google a million questions and I finally found it. I almost cried while watching the trailer 😭😫😂. Love this movie as a kid!
27 years later and it still holds up. Actually funnier watching it as an adult.

As the two above me said...Chuck Jones was in charge of the animation sequence (which production of started 6 months before any live action work started). If you look carefully during the sequence, when "Roy" mails the letter/order request to ACME, the stamp is Chuck Jones' face as an homage.

@@Gravydog316 It's honestly very clever and it gave me a big laugh and this is coming from someone who's never saw the series that made John Ritter famous, this film was a real treat to discover and has become one of my favorites.
I wish John had lived and made a sequel with Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers.
I can't believe that they gave away the gag of him appearing on three's company!!

I watched this movie so many times just recently found the name of it, so I could look it up along with Nothing but Trouble, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead, and Mom and Dad Save the World

@@socialmedianotfunanymore John Ritter (who plays the main character in this movie and is in that scene) originally starred on the TV show Three's Company, which is the show he ends up in in that scene. The very meta joke there is (even though he's not technically playing himself) him being back in that show again.
@Futuredynamo, I get that but I'm not getting the creepy/spooky part, which I've seen in some comments about that scene? Why is that creepy/spooky or am I missing something? lol
@@socialmedianotfunanymore The joke is a knock at the television show. The actor actually played the main character on that show. As if the show is so incredibly horrible that it's the last place he'd want to be. Many ways to interpret it. The show isn't actually scary but just arguably horrible.

I completely forgot about this film until today. I rented it from Blockbuster videos in the early '90s. I need to watch it again. I've forgotten the entire plot.
I thought I was losing my mind! I thought this was an episode of Honey I Shrunk The Kids the Series for years. Nobody ever talks about this film! Must watch now!
To think it took The Nostalgia Critic referencing this movie during his review of "The Ring" at the 12:15 mark of it, for me to finally remember the name of this movie I saw only 2 or 3 times as a kid, let alone fully remember the synopsis of it that I only had a partial memory of in my head for almost 30 years.
I remember this trailer from 28 years ago. I probably have never seen it since. This was the time when a new video store chain opened up. I liked this trailer and idea (did not get the Three's Company reference, was too young) I don't think I ever saw this film. Time to fix that.

AMC is making a television adaptation of Stay Tuned, it's in early development.
A pc game was inspired by this in 1996
You could but it would pale in comparison to the nostalgia of dish network, cable, PPV, and pre-streaming internet television in general. A good title could Streaming or Trending.
I remember seeing this when I was 10 years old. I saw wayne's World in theatre when I was like 8 or 9. Plus, my Father paid more attention to the T.V. than me, so it made a lot of sense.
This and Mom & Dad Save The World are classics.

This is a seriously underrated film. I wonder what kind of satire would be made these days now that you have the likes of HBO, Netflix, Disney+ and so on?
29 years before WandaVision
This was released in theatres on August 14, 1992 when I was 11 and a 6th grader and on vhs on January 7, 1993 when I was still 11 and a 6th grader.
Fascinating.
Tom S. Parker and Jim Jennewein would go on to write the script for the 1994 Flintstones and even wrote the original “Fantasy” script for the live action Super Mario Bros movie.
I hope the television show adaptation of Stay Tuned will be good, I hope that it can have some horror elements and of course don't forget the clever dark comedy.
Don't screw this up AMC, I want to see your take on Stay Tuned.

This movie is on Amazon Prime and I saw it the first time in years and I forgot how much I loved it.
It seems quaint that there was a time when you just flipped through channels looking for something to watch
Now we flick through shows on a streaming app, still arguing.
"Not that one, I'm not in the mood. We saw *that* series already. No, not that one, I don't like (insert actors name here)"
In my opinion, I think this movie might have been the inspiration for Treehouse of Horror IX's second segment.

The message of this movie is not to watch to much tv. The irony is in order to get most of the references you have to have seen a lot of TV. Also the only way to watch it is on TV

this movie did interdimensional tv before rick and morty.
Re-watched it recently and noticed a pretty big mistake in one scene. At one point the son, Darryl Knable, is hanging onto a post in the backyard to keep from being sucked into the giant satellite and at that point you can see a pair of adult hands, clear as day, on screen holding him up. Hard to believe it was missed in editing.

Ok this would KINDA be up Tim Burton's alley (he was offered the chance to dirext but did Batman Returns instead)
Also i cant see Richard Dreyfuss and Tracey Ullman as Roy and Helen (Morgan Creek wanted them originally but it would have bumped up the film's budget by half a million dollars)
They could do a remake with better effects and a satire on streaming services.

Underrated movie
Dear God......I don't know how old I was, I was born in 87, but somehow I've seen bits and pieces of this movie because I remember them being a mouse. And I remember I thought the girl mouse was really cute.

I know John Ritter was on Three's Company but why did he scream as if it was a nightmare being back on that show? Am I missing something about that particular scene?
Because it was fluff tv. Not like a prolific role, or shattering character that moved cinematic mountains or had some critical message, or had him enacting a role to portray an actual pivotal person in some epic retelling of a life. He played a clumsy funny didnt always get the girl, or the job he wanted chef. It was eye appealing slap stick comedy. That went on for a good many years. But nothing bringing any real accolades to speak of. Full circle now?
It was a "nightmare". Not only was he now trapped in TV but at the moment he was back on his old show.
It was a joke for fans of the show. Spike is not present, so it was just for Ritter to parody himself and they nailed it.
When I first watched this on tv, they called it ‘Hell-O-Vision’. I then spent the next ten years searching for a movie that didn’t exist, and only came across it again on a random top ten list.
In the movie, They watch you and listen to you. Just like voice to skull technology/ microwave auditory effect. You have to go to library research what some people call voice to skull technology/ microwave auditory effect.

Can someone help me out? Is the opening and reoccurring theme used for this trailer used in other trailers of the time or is it actually used in the film? Im not sure why I need to know this, but it would make me very happy to find out its origin :)
