While genre bending is pretty common in K-pop they somehow manage to always make Dreamcatcher songs FEEL like Dreamcatcher songs. Even their b-sides that don't have rock elements still have that same feeling. I think a lot of it is how they use dynamics in their production. Almost all of their songs have these push and pulls in the song structure that make you feel like you're on a journey rather than just listening to music. Six cool facts about BEcause: 1. It's based on Jordan Peele's horror movie Us. The girls went together to watch it and loved it so much they decided to make a horror song out of it. The main theme is the myth of Doppelgangers, the evil identical twins who live in the Underworld. They want to replace the Originals and become them, but they're mere dolls without feelings or love. The shrouded figures are in fact the Originals they replaced. aka Dami's personal collection. 2. The name of the song BEcause has two parts. The first is the Chinese character Bi which means Sadness + Because = Because of Sadness. The evil twins do what they do because they're sad. 3. BEcause is a puzzle. To understand what's happening you have to watch the MV, read the lyrics, watch the Dance MV, observe the cinematography, in order to get the clues. Also, one has to watch Us to get some clues. BEcause is not just a song, it's a whole Art Project. It took fans months to understand it better. 4. Everything is hidden in plain sight. 5. When the song was release in July 2021, it took Dreamcatcher Company 9 days to release the English subtitles. The result was that many people this was a Summer love song! When they read the lyrics, they were so shocked! 6. BEcause was released in the mini album Summer Holiday, which has the cutest, lightest and popiest Dreamcatcher songs ever. BEcause is hidden in plain sight, posing as a cute Summer love song. "BEcause I love you". Summer is the season for watching horror movies with your loved ones in Korea. Dreamcatcher are outdoing themselves here once again. Musically, the song is a fantastic journey. There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu. The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's backing vocals is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done. About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. They noted that if you look at "BE" as a written Chinese character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (or her doppelganger!). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". And I didn't even touch on the references to the movie "Us" yet, there is so much going on. The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "Your face turns blue, blue. Your expression is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art.
