Very interesting, one of the things I like is the care you take when placing tools on engine covers etc, handling delicate items not to cause any damage, attention to detail...nice!
I started watching mat Armstrong then seen some of your videos then seen the interview with the fish boy ..and the story you told off how you got to where you are.... fantastic I think you're a inspiration to all... keep it up... brilliant
So much fun watching your diagnoses and repairs, thanks for it. Here is suggestion Ricky, put your meter in Kohm range and measure resistance between one of the pins and metal body of injector. I bet one of them is shorted to ground. Also, jut ohm reading will not show full story, you would need to measure inductance to see health of the coil, since injector pin is driven by inductor winding.
Top job diagnosing this. Goes to show that you guys are definitely worth your salt. I totally get your comment about how ruined your body is. Years of body building followed by martial arts has left me damaged. The guys at work now refer to me as Mr Glass as something else is pretty much broken every week.
Same here I started work at 17 as an apprentice bricklayer. Working 6 and 7 days by the age of 42 I’d left myself disabled through sheer hard work. I loved working till I dropped but ultimately paid the price.
I have the exact same model 2008 R8 so I've watched this mysterious misfire diagnosis with more interest than normal. Excellent work. As it happens, I recently diagnosed a similar misfire problem on a customers Golf GTI TFSi. Real pain to pinpoint & damn expensive for a single genuine injector. Hope you all have a great wknd ahead 🍻
Always great to watch a professional doing their job. Added bonus is the really good commentary that explains what you are seeing. Workshop humour is a bonus.
Bla bla bla... yeah, the cars etc are all great and that but ...... Mitch, showing such kindness to that little bird?? Wonderful. you were brought up well my friend. God bless you!
Well I did not expect what you found as a root cause since it tested good. Just goes to show why you make the big bucks mate! You also went further as a next step than just bypassing the loom.... Great job sir! I'd have waisted time with a compression check after bypassing the loom looking for a collapsed/broken valve spring... I get to blame you for mentioning the valve and being a real mechanic....
Worked in aviation ( Aero Engine Test Bed ) and this procedure reminds me exactly what we used to do with a a suspect component. Check continuity and resistance against the Maint. Manual figures. Check to see if pins in the connector plugs haven't pushed back and if all ok run a 'hard wire' in to eliminate the harness. Nine times out of ten it would be a component failure
I pulled intake manifold on my 4.2L last month to carbon clean and flaw matching the injectors among other misc things. I just saw Rickey's comment about fuel injector's seal and car catching fire. That reminded me that I had to pull out fuel rail little bit to adjust few things but then I pushed it back in place without making sure that injector seals are not dislodged. Now I am going to remove fuel rail tomorrow to make sure everything is in place. Thanks Rickey.
Great video, a lot of so called engineers give up too easily. Nothing better than when you find the problem. It’s getting the same in most areas of engineering now where if the fault code doesn’t point directly to the fix then people are stumped.
@38:22 Have you considered building a wooden platform that straddles both sides of the car with suitable foam padding on the inside to protect the paint on the rear panels. You could build in rungs so you can climb up safely. Build a prototype, perfect the size then add hinges so the legs fold in, so it won’t take up too much room when not in use. Once your happy make a foam comfort cushion for the top and jobs done.
Enjoyed that job. Always interesting to see the diag process. I noticed the repair wires you used to make your test harness have the wee blue silicon seals on them. My local TPS keep telling me you can’t get wires with those seals pre-fitted. Are they talking shite?
Great fault finding videos! I know this is 5 months ago but I’m just working my way through all your old videos… I’m future could you not carry out an insulation resistance test at the injection loom wiring connector closest to the engine. I’m a commercial electrician, we would put either 250v or 500v through a wire or a pair of wires (usually live and neutral together if worried about sensitive components on the circuit that we aren’t able to isolate or remove before testing) and check the continuity to earth (ground in this case) I’m guessing the ecu has a current limiting device internally for each injector circuit and will shut down once a higher than expected current is drawn due to low resistance or a dead short in the injector coil. I remember getting my injectors tested before rebuilding my engine when my transit blew a hole in the top of the piston a few years back and watched the guy test them with a specialist meter just for this purpose ( I think it tested at 100v) you could possibly use me of these but just modify the test leads to use to probe the pins at the loom connector. Easy to work out with hindsight but possibly a useful fault finding process going forward. Keep doing the diagnostic/wiring fault videos as they are a good watch 👍
People don't even think about this. No amount of money will help. Bending over an engine bay is probably the worst possible punishment. I admire your dedication and stamina. Who's going to win at Knockhill?
Continuity between the coil (either terminal) & body of the injector is where you're needing to check. I did suggest that it was most likely a ground leakage issue as the injectors are fired at high(ish) voltage.
Good old fashioned fault finding, great episode and I know how hard it can be while being watched it does make things more difficult! I'd love to visit for a day to see behind the scenes ! Having worked in skylines and supras making the exhausts and intercooler pipework I think I could learn more from you ! We need more fabbing episodes ! Keep em coming stay real !!
I used to run around europe and the uk fixing things. Once the list of possibilities is known, you can rule 80% of the casues in 20% of the time. A lot of people make the mistake of going for a complex solution to the problem when 80% of the time it is a simple cause.
Nice job! As for the injector, it probably failed on impedance or impedance change under load. The first being easy to test but the second, no so much.
This is why I'm glad to be old and retired from the trade.. spent 10 years as a Diagnostic tech in Honda delatership.. fault diagnostics is a nightmare sometimes
good work as always, would it not of been better to change all the injectors depending on ages and mileage of course, also a carbon clean being FSI and the inlet manifold being off.
A couple of great videos, watching you diagnose a problem and rebuilding engines is great to watch and you really know your shit, definitely one of the best techs I’ve seen around. A quick question regarding the injectors, seeing as they are relatively cheap is it worth replacing all of them as a bit of preventative maintenance and in case any of the old ones have slightly different flow rates considering their age? Love the videos
Makes me thankful I dont have one of these! Nightmare to work on by the looks of it. I also wonder how much more it would have cost going to a main stealer? Replacing parts until they get lucky...
You're right 100%. Having a laugh while working is important, as long as it doesn't affect your work. Lee Evans, what a legend, remember the missing woman gag, "Shelia if you're out there love, please get in touch" 'it was fkin him!' hahaha brilliant And dropping your toast after you've buttered it and it landing butter side down every fkin time! Fk it... just butter the floor instead!!
Yeah man, all you have to do to get that MI setup you need is rig up the sex swing you've already got at home to the engine hoist, and job's a good'un. Great couple videos Ricky! I definitely like the longer format. Are you still working with Carly on getting them set for Lamborghini? I thought I heard that in a video somewhere.
How many hours did you put into that one Rickey? Great to watch the methodology!.. Did you see the Sheepy Race R8 give away car catch fire a few months back the day after it was handed over?! They sacked the technician who last worked on it, possibly the injector seals. Do you have a check list of things to be ticked off when going back together??
Brilliant video as always. You don't need to own a suoercar to benefit from the info in these videos as the same logic can be used for most fuel injection cars. Random question ( only asking as I also spilt fuel over my engine removing fuel lines to pull plenum on my 300zx). How long does fuel take to evaporate before its safe to get the engine warm?
Man. Even from working on my humble A4, I know how bloody uncomfortable it is to be leaning across an engine like that. That looks like a right pain of a job, that sounds like it should be easy. "Replace the injectors" 😂 Get an engine lift and put it through the hoop on the back of your jeans, then dangle yourself over the engine 😂😂😂
Could you have put the injector from 1 into 2, and then 3 into 5? It then would have moved the faulty injector from driver A to either B or C indicating which was the faulty one 👍🏻
Only caught last part of this 1,he so reminds me of a younger 2 generation, s ago "me" except more honest, as I wouldn't have shown were I 4got to plug in exhaust sensor plug 😂
I do like these fault finding videos, it's more entertaining and educational. I don't understand why the ECU or the loom was suspected faulty without eliminating the injectors first? Seems like you went the wrong way round 🤔
Loving the vids, keep up the good work. I have a gen 1 v8. Is there anyway to reset anual service with carly. Annoying every time ignition switched on.
Just wot the doctor ordered, a decent video to watch while I'm laid up in bed 😢 2nd knee now fitted, just need a hot nurse now (not that I'd be any use, lol)
"We will listen to the viewers and create 20 minute videos"... *Bumps the length from 30 to 60 minute videos*. I like the stubbornness! I really enjoy these videos with diagnosing. You could edit them a bit though and trim to 20-30 mins ;-)

Same here,
Best couple of videos I’ve seen. Thanks for the explanation along this journey.
Glad you enjoyed them. Thanks for watching

Excellent video. Appreciate your logic and working practice, especially whilst being filmed.👍

you cant beat a skilled engineer or mechanic and they are both worth their eight in gold.
Possibly even nine! 😁
SEVEN!!!!!!!
And they will never be replaced by AI !

Absolutely engrossing work! You just cannot beat skill, dedication, experience!!!
Nice to know my sofa mechanic diagnosis was correct. Also nice to see someone with the same paranoia as me checking the last wire for continuity.
Always great to watch a professional doing their job. Added bonus is the really good commentary that explains what you are seeing. Workshop humour is a bonus.
These long videos are great I find really interesting and informative
Bla bla bla... yeah, the cars etc are all great and that but ...... Mitch, showing such kindness to that little bird?? Wonderful. you were brought up well my friend. God bless you!
Couldn't agree more!

Enjoyed that job. Always interesting to see the diag process. I noticed the repair wires you used to make your test harness have the wee blue silicon seals on them. My local TPS keep telling me you can’t get wires with those seals pre-fitted. Are they talking shite?
That Sir, was both amazing and wow! I know it's your day to day stuff, but brill to watch, thank you :)
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching

That bird was from your competitor lol great vid. Thoroughly enjoyed

This guys technical knowledge must be reassuring to his customers, great vids guys.
I enjoyed the video and gained some knowledge, what a back ache .❤
Great diagnoses, we'll sorted, great vid to see the whole process
13:57 That sound was a bird? I thought it was a turbo 😄 maybe the bird came to fix his twin turbo
How nice to see an expert doing an in depth diagnosis well done hope you do many more nice one mate
Just got to know about you. Great job really enjoyable and very educational. Consummate professional.
good job mate
Thanks
good work as always, would it not of been better to change all the injectors depending on ages and mileage of course, also a carbon clean being FSI and the inlet manifold being off.
I so much like all your videos definitely you are the best pro R8 engineer.
My R8 is in europe and no one can found issue ...
Love the plate 4321 Go
At least it was spaced correctly....

Why would you trust anyone else to work on your car, Ricky is da man
How lovely....... Great video everyone, many thanks.
Why am I clicking on an hour long video at 00:41AM.
Because FBS is interesting. Love this channel
Thank you mate! 🙌🏼
Best video yet more mechanics and information keep it up thanks
Makes me thankful I dont have one of these! Nightmare to work on by the looks of it.
I also wonder how much more it would have cost going to a main stealer? Replacing parts until they get lucky...
Great video again, please, what do you use for you floor surface? Looks like it’s holding up extremely well!
You're right 100%. Having a laugh while working is important, as long as it doesn't affect your work.
Lee Evans, what a legend, remember the missing woman gag, "Shelia if you're out there love, please get in touch" 'it was fkin him!' hahaha brilliant

I definitely like the longer format. Are you still working with Carly on getting them set for Lamborghini? I thought I heard that in a video somewhere.
Excellent work!!!!
Could you have swapped out the leads to the injectors and listened if the injector sound itself changes with a mechanics stephoscope?
How many hours did you put into that one Rickey? Great to watch the methodology!..
Did you see the Sheepy Race R8 give away car catch fire a few months back the day after it was handed over?! They sacked the technician who last worked on it, possibly the injector seals. Do you have a check list of things to be ticked off when going back together??
Great work.
Wonder if you’d have more views with some of this done on time laps? I’d definitely be watching more if the videos were shorter
Nice work Ric & Dav! Cheers, Doug
If the injector was disconnected would the output from the ECU be visible on the Pico ?
Looks like you need some sheet rock / chipy stilts
Great work, do we know why the injectiors fail in the first place? Do they just get Shit Hot?
4,3,2,1, GO numberplate is quite cheeky :)
😂😂 It belongs to our long time client and now good friend.
Can you just have a look at how many times launch control has been activated? 😂@@REPerformanceUK
So pleased that even professionals struggle with them bloody connectors 🤣
What ever you are charging it’s not enough great video very interesting thank you
My original comment was 'something simple but impossible to get at'...😅
Great vid.
Nice professional job Ricky ( including the swearing lol KEEP in Davla!)
Nicely done. Good video.
Thank you
Brilliant video as always.
Does this sort of work cost more on an R8 Spyder due to worse access to engine bay?
Top watch
Eye spy a little scania at the workshop entrance. You branching out into 6&8 cylinder diesels?😂
The 'Kate not got one' comment (mission impossible harness) went over everyone head 😂
Really enjoyed this, just wish were closer to where i am 😢
Man. Even from working on my humble A4, I know how bloody uncomfortable it is to be leaning across an engine like that. That looks like a right pain of a job, that sounds like it should be easy. "Replace the injectors" 😂
Get an engine lift and put it through the hoop on the back of your jeans, then dangle yourself over the engine 😂😂😂
You mentioned Ben Raynes R8. I rebuilt it I think you have had it back for work. What did you think of the repairs?
My wife says I’m always wrong !!!😂
The r8 messiah.👌
I expect that Bird crashed within 5 mins.
those orange handle pliers, snap on? got a link pls
Could you have put the injector from 1 into 2, and then 3 into 5?
It then would have moved the faulty injector from driver A to either B or C indicating which was the faulty one 👍🏻
29:12 you missed that joke!!!
I was bang on the money.
Closure!
when you you scoped it and saw the very first pulse and then shutdown. i thought right then its an injector fault or shorted loom
Yeah I knew it wouldn’t be loom but getting the manifold off is such a huge job it’s better to work through everything first then swap the injector.
Ricky are you racing at brands on the 22nd/23rd in the NG road racing club championship. If you are I will pop down and see you it's my local track.
Yes mate I’ll be there! Drop me a mail and I’ll sort you tickets!!
Leaning over that R8 engine bay looked crippling. My back is chalked I wouldn't be able to walk for a week. I'll stick to my Motorcycles 😂
Only caught last part of this 1,he so reminds me of a younger 2 generation, s ago "me" except more honest, as I wouldn't have shown were I 4got to plug in exhaust sensor plug 😂
It’s only the exhaust solenoid……wouldn’t have affected running.
I do like these fault finding videos, it's more entertaining and educational.
I don't understand why the ECU or the loom was suspected faulty without eliminating the injectors first?
Seems like you went the wrong way round 🤔
Takes 4 hours to get to the injectors….so start at the easiest bit to rule out first!
You also can’t test them as we showed….
Great work but what a pig to do. Love the channel
Loving the vids, keep up the good work. I have a gen 1 v8. Is there anyway to reset anual service with carly. Annoying every time ignition switched on.
Firstly come on Scotland and have u fixed it yet 😂😂
This aged like milk in the sun 😅
So probably waaata has gotten on to the coil and shorts to ground😢
Well over my head but worth the journey.
Thanks for watching.
Red rubber grease
I like learning from other peoples mistakes 😈 The first thing you would always do in this situation is swap the injector to a new position.
You don't need Carly... You need Karly... 😅
Just wot the doctor ordered, a decent video to watch while I'm laid up in bed 😢 2nd knee now fitted, just need a hot nurse now (not that I'd be any use, lol)
Wishing you a speedy recovery Andy.
@REPerformanceUK cheers, R1 gonna be in the garage for a while now, lol 😆
Hiya Kate 👋 hope you're all well x
...Super...
Hard fought victory.
"We will listen to the viewers and create 20 minute videos"... *Bumps the length from 30 to 60 minute videos*.
I like the stubbornness!
I really enjoy these videos with diagnosing. You could edit them a bit though and trim to 20-30 mins ;-)
lads its friday 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
They probably filmed on Tuesday and released video on Friday. No way it took 2 weeks for them to diagnose this R8.
Whats point use shity carly as you have rossi vcds
Because they will be paying him, more than likely. Get that money son.
What's happening with the RS4 gents?
