Friend had problems with one of these (2007 B7 Avant) on lease from Audi UK …on delivery from new EPC light would randomly come on intermittently anything from a few days to weeks (50% time when light load sat cruising on motorway)…very odd. Engine was stripped and few things remediated like cracked vacuum hose etc but EPC problem not resolved. Was in the shop for a few months testing and ultimately didn’t solve the issue. Other problem was ESP taking power off on moderate/hard cornering…talking to guys on enthusiasts forum it was solved by disabling ESP stage 1 (when dry) - saloon variant seamed less prone to this problem so we figured firmware physics tables probably over cautious on avant 🤪 Friend was offered the car end of 3yr lease for a song but sent it back instead 😵💫 Aside from that amazing car… the 2nd stage induction and rev ranges were insane fun but stopping every ~160 miles for fuel not so much 😎😂

Once again a great watch, what your talking about most of the time is over my head but you're a natural at explaining stuff regardless of what language your using :). Just one question, why do people insist on modifying already fast cars to drive on the road, I could understand it if it was a Ford Fiesta but an Audi RS4?? By the way did you fix it? Stupid question I know
I took my RS4 and modified it heavily. The valves were replaced with Mary Quant 2CV6's, Terry and June camshafts. Fitted a dry sump system made from a royal Dalton toilet cistern. It took the fire service four hours to put the fire out. It left a bigger stain on the M6 than a Tesla.
Having similar issues currently with 08 S6 v10, but only at idle. Battery died, then car developed small kinda back fires from driver's bank. New MAF sensors and now does it from both banks. This is actually a somewhat common issue with double ECU engines from Audi usually after carbon cleaning...
Ironically there is a tsb from Audi for this issue on double ECU v10 R8s and the remedy in the tsb is to update the firmware on the ecus to correct problem...
I am actually taking out all 4 VVT solenoids to resistance check and clean them. In my instance these make sense as after carbon cleaning I never removed and checked these... Wish me luck.
Thank you for this video and your time and effort making this vid. I'd LOVE an RS4, but they are a super car and need looking after, oh boy I don't have the funds.
I have had a jolly good time finding out that I had a split (literally) hose somewhere in my vacuum/boost circuit that would only leak on pressure difference. Smoke didn't find it, I had to take things apart and inspect them before I found the root cause of this car. Mind you, I bought it for next to nothing because three workshops fired the parts cannon on it for two previous owners and it took me over a day to solve it, *after* I undid all the butchery and chinesium parts that were thrown on. It could be the things Ricky said on the end of the video, but if not, look for the hose/pipe that only leaks under actual pressure/vacuum.
Yesss Ricky and Dav... Fixed my issue on a same era Audi, unplugged runs so much better 😂... I thought it'd just identifed as a firework on boost I'll get you both a pint if ever I see you 😄
Had a stuck wastegate on my RS turbo in the 90s and ran like shit under full load. Took it to my Ford dealer who took it out and stuck the conrod out the side of the block. All the engineers mulling around when i came in and they said they hadnt driven it at all. Luckily I always log milage when I leave my car somewhere…
I laughed at the anti-lag joke more than I should have. Is VCDS sort of the go-to for the normal person for VW/Audi/Lambo/ etc? Seems a lot easier (read: cheaper) to get a hold of than ODIS. Cheers for another good one, Rick.
Tunes will be the death of us. The lessons have not been learned. Most tuners defeat the engine protection features to squeeze out a little more power. If you're lucky, you just pop a head-gasket. In other cases, you hammer your ring lands or cook your pistons. It's a mess.
I had this, was chasing a rich off idle bank 1-2 on my b7 rs4 again a aftermarket bosh maf was found to be the culprit between 2-3k would wobble but not to the extent of this 👍
Could it be the downstream o2 sensors. Are they unplugged or cheap aftermarket garbage. I had a car running super rich turns out the after cat sensor was not in the pipe. It was plugged in and stuffed up in the heat shield.
Hi Ricky, I spoke to you a few times on insta, love the vids keep them coming. Question....Ive got a bmw m2 and am taking it to the nurburgring at the end of the month. What brake pads would you recommend putting in it? It's got oem atm and could do with being changed. Im going to do the usual service and tyres etc too
When you put the smoke up the exhaust it was exiting throttle body when you applied throttle. 24min 34sec. Not sure how you edited video as in whether smoke was still being sent up exhaust at this point. Would that suggest that there's a valve issue allowing air to cross from exhaust and intake?
Hi Ricky, I emailed you the other day about Carley going to a subscription model, do you recommend any other software that isn’t subscription. Also, Audi TTS 2010, second hand headlight fitted, now both Xenon headlights don’t work, DRL’s do still work. Does the new Xenon need coding to the car (base level set etc), then both will work again. I could always fit the old control box off the broken headlight, would this then fix the issue. Final question, can you reprogram the Haldex to give a more traditional 4x4 experience, i.e. power to all wheels all the time, rather than the front wheels are slipping so bring in the rear wheels just until the front wheels stop spipping? Love the videos, hope they pay dividend as I look forward to them, especially like the engine builds and fault finding ones. Thanks Marty
Audi's - as you know so much better than me - use the flow of air, to decide how much fuel to inject. I think this is a MAF sensor problem, and also with the exhaust being filthy, I'd be looking at the condition of - or if there even is - a DPF.
It's broken that is. But you will fix it. So... if the air mass sensor reading is breaking down and both ecu's use the reading to tweak the fuel demand, why would it be different across the two banks if that measure is used for both fuel pumps that as you say are effectively working as a single fuel pump? I don't understand how one bank would have an incorrect fueling. Hope that makes sense... I know what I'm trying to say. Maybe one Lambda is faulty..... or a broken valve spring😂😂😂 great head scratching video.
I see the issue, if you look on the front, just below the bonnet. It has those four circles. Theres your issue. In all serioysness its usually the intercooler pipes and clips and a worn out plastic intercooler connection tooobs,
When the car is adding 25% fuel this doesn't mean something in the closed loop fueling is at fault. Step one should be does it need the 25% (or maybe even more, because +25% is the short term limit). It almost seems like low pressure fuel pump issues, but im skeptical because your long term fuel trims weren't too bad. Given both banks are adding near enough to the same amount under load then i would rule out oxygen sensor reading wrong. I would log lambda control both banks and lambda actual to see if the 25% additional is enough to meet its lamda target. Another little side thing to check is someone hasn't mixed the oxygen sensors up when doing the downpipes, seen people mix banks and cause dramas doing these
If you swap probes one will go +25% and the other -25% as they wind up the closed loop control. I went to the MOT station to check exhaust output to see if the +25% was achieving lambda aim….if so then it’s air control or fuel pressure. It’s not, it’s at .86 lambda so now we have a measurement problem.

I'm going for carbon build up on the valves
Leaky toobs and intercooler or a crank or cam sensor are the other candidates.
Oh he just ruled out the toobs though mass airflow he says looks proper
Any update on this, been a month now. Just want to know if Proper Factory MAF sensor was the fix?
I have to ask. Why didn’t you use a scope to test the MAF sensor? Nice and easy test, it’s analogue. Peak voltage should be approx 4v
