I have a ton of patriotic stitching completed and in the works and would love to have a quilt/pillow set like that... and I'm really liking the "beachy" feel!! I wanted to make the heartfelt quilt with my Jane Austen fabric and then stitch the cross stitch in the same colors....but I have fallen in love with your patriotic version! I love Fat Quarter Shop, whether for quilting or cross stitch. They’re always thinking and come up with great projects for lots of skill levels and styles! I’ve been quilting for over 25 years and I went through their learn to quilt series it was a great refresher!
Hi again! Just wanted to pop in and let you know that I've now stitched quite a bit on DMC, Witchelt and hand dyed aida. DMC is definitely the stiffest and had the most uneven "squares" if you will. The hand dyed is the most pliable and the easiest to stitch on too. I don't know what any of this really means other than try different kinds and choose what you like. 😘 Thanks for entertaining my question so many weeks in a row. I'm working on Letters to Santa and Boo Crew. Super excited to see your progress. I hope you're week was great!

As much as I would have hated to rip out all of that from Halloween Rules, the dog is looking much better. I just decided to stitch letters to Santa and waiting on my order with the floss and fabric. It'll be my first mystery stitch and my first SAL. Right now I'm stitching Star Wars Christmas ornaments for my youngest son's tree while I wait. I'm getting ready to start Up On The Rooftop by Stitching w/ the Housewives. I only have 3 I'm doing for Jolly July but ready to start Boo Crew. Can't wait for that one. I didn't get the purple fabric either, it's still sold out. Loving these flosstubes!

For my stitching I just finished Little House Needleworks "Love". I have all the charts and after watching the live decided to do these on one piece of fabric. I also decided to do the Hands on Design Season 2 in the SAL. For quilting I am making Sparklers Freedom Road Charm Quilt by Kansas Troubles. Love it! I am also working on the Wisconsin Shop Hop Quilt. I am ready to sew my blocks together. I did leave a comment on the tutorial about needles. I was asking how often you change the needle on your sewing machine? For that matter is there a point when you use a new needle for your stitching? Thanks have a great week. Letters to Santa, the border is mimicking old Air Mail envelope border. The envelopes were just red, whit and blue stripes. You could always do a couple different shades of red in the border.

I love all of your patriotic finishes especially the big pillow 🤩! I managed to complete one small patriotic project before July 4th but still need to make it into a pillow or something. I started a small Valentine's Day pattern today. I'm waiting for the thread and fabric for Halloween Rules to be delivered... hopefully tomorrow, then I'll get it started. Is there much difference in look and ease of stitching between the different brands of floss and do you have a favorite brand?
Hi Nichol, I bought the kit for Santa's Hat of Holly, Gifts some HoHoHo & Peppermints from the Fat Quarter Shop and have just started it. I changed the fabric for 14 count Aida because I haven't cross stitched in a long time and am more comfortable starting out again on that fabric. I was inspired to do stitch in hand after watching your video too!! I do have a question, how can I find your FlossTube videos each week? I subscribed and clicked the bell but they don't show up in my email like your card-making videos do and I don't want to miss anything!! I'm very impressed with all your beautiful projects!! I have a question about project bags. i believe in one of your first videos you said that you use the SSS bags since you had a lot. Have you ever made one out of fabric? Which do you like better if you have? I have some fabric that I bought because I loved it and thought that they might make pretty bags but I am wondering if the thread knots easier from rubbing on the fabric and if the needles get stuck in the fabric. I am doing the boo crew. I have a light gray 14 count Aida and I waited too long and am waiting on the floss to arrive. I am also going to try to do the letters to Santa and am waiting for my floss for that one too

They are to be made a Ornaments but I want to make them small pillows and Sat and Sunday I'll start a new Christmas from an old Better Homes Cross Stitch magazine but I have not yet chosen. Thank you again Nichol for the pillow tutorial. It was so helpful. Also for the Sew Along video which was so much fun. For my projects, I thought I was doing the mystery Letters to Santa. I prepared the cloth and my floss but I had the wrong pattern. It was last years. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️So today I ordered the floss pack and correct cloth. It’s probably a good thing because like you, I prefer red and white too. I downloaded and printed out the FQS planning calendar too so I won’t get so confused. Have a Happy 4th!
I love doing Christmas in July. It makes me feel cooler in this heat :) As it happened I finished my Feast Frenzy by Dimension a couple of days before The start of July. So I started Believe in Santa, and I’m getting great progress!

When it comes to stitching with white thread, do you have a favorite? I have seen in different FB groups where people say some types/colors seem to lay better for them than others so I was wondering if you had a preference.

How do you purchase the fabric you use? Do you buy really large pieces and cut them down, or do you have a craft store cut them for you? And how do you choose what fabric to use, does the pattern tell you? I’m just jumping in to cross stitch. I bought a couple kits from Fat Quarter Shop after your live, but am curious about buying everything separately.
Cross Stitch fabric is sold in different sized pieces. I use the cross stitch calculator to figure out how big of a piece I need before purchasing. If you're buying from FQS, they usually link or show you under the pattern what you need. If you're just starting out I would buy and use the recommended fabric until you get comfortable stitching and picking your own.

Card making and video content is my full time job that I work on M-F during "work hours" so quilting and cross stitch are my hobbies that I do evenings/weekends.

So, another excellent video! I'm hoping to get started on the Lizzy Kate Christmas rules, do some more on my grandson's Christmas stockings, and knock out a couple pin pillows this month. Oh, and I did sign up for the FQS SAL of the months -- Season 2. That should all be appearing soon so I'll try to get the frame done too and July -- though maybe not before your next video or sew along if you do another one! :) I have not done a quilt with multiple blocks since my very first sampler quilt! Your fabric selections are so summery on these quilts! That quilt is going to be amazing -- it already is but the finished product is going to be just incredible! I'm excited about your SAL, I love fall, I think something on the small side is a good idea for newbies (and people coming back to stitching after 35 years) who already have tons of stuff they are getting back into. :) Have a great Fourth!

I am going to do the FQS Boo Crew SAL, also my first SAL, and I also love Halloween decor. I have downloaded the first section and the supply list. I will use DMC floss but will have to use plain white AIDA cloth since I was too late to get the purple and I don't want to dye my AIDA. Hope it works out. Or I do have a piece of White Birch Heatherfield, 26 count (it looks like birch bark, with grey flecks mixed into a cream background) What do you think? I am just worried the ghost won't look good against the white AIDA. BTW, finished "Visit a Haunted House" on my Halloween Rules.
I wouldn't stitch the Boo Crew on white because the letters are outlined in white as well as the ghost unless you want to change your floss colors. I would pick a colored fabric. I'm not using the purple, but a gray aida: shrsl.com/3lmrs

I'm not experienced at sewing. It's been a very long time. You say you zig zag flossing fabric. Do you always have to cut it and prep it yourself or can you buy it already done?

I love your FlossTube videos! You are amazing, Nichol! ❤ Here's my question - say you see a fabric collection that makes you drool, so you HAVE to have it, but you don't yet have a plan for its use. How do you determine how much of it to get? And do you usually get some yardage of each of the designs in the collection, or just a handful of the designs?
If I like the majority of the designs in a collection and I don't have a specific quilt in mind I will buy the fat quarter bundle. If I only like some of the collection I will buy 1/2 yards (usually) of the fabrics I like or that I know will go with other fabric I own. If there are good stripes I will buy 1 -2 yards for future bindings. Great backings, I will buy 5-6 yards.

I started a small Valentine's Day pattern today. I'm waiting for the thread and fabric for Halloween Rules to be delivered... hopefully tomorrow, then I'll get it started. Is there much difference in look and ease of stitching between the different brands of floss and do you have a favorite brand?
I prefer DMC for basic floss and Classic Colorworks or Week's Dye for fancy floss.

Hi Nichol, I bought the kit for Santa's Hat of Holly, Gifts some HoHoHo & Peppermints from the Fat Quarter Shop and have just started it. I changed the fabric for 14 count Aida because I haven't cross stitched in a long time and am more comfortable starting out again on that fabric. I was inspired to do stitch in hand after watching your video too!! I do have a question, how can I find your FlossTube videos each week? I subscribed and clicked the bell but they don't show up in my email like your card-making videos do and I don't want to miss anything!! I'm very impressed with all your beautiful projects!! I have a question about project bags. i believe in one of your first videos you said that you use the SSS bags since you had a lot. Have you ever made one out of fabric? Which do you like better if you have? I have some fabric that I bought because I loved it and thought that they might make pretty bags but I am wondering if the thread knots easier from rubbing on the fabric and if the needles get stuck in the fabric. Anyway, sorry for the long post but I would appreciate your thoughts!

Railroading refers to placing your needle between 2 strands of floss when going down through the fabric, to help with twisting. I can demo this in the next Flosstube.

They are to be made a Ornaments but I want to make them small pillows and Sat and Sunday I'll start a new Christmas from an old Better Homes Cross Stitch magazine but I have not yet chosen. Thank you again Nichol for the pillow tutorial. It was so helpful. Also for the Sew Along video which was so much fun. For my projects, I thought I was doing the mystery Letters to Santa. I prepared the cloth and my floss but I had the wrong pattern. It was last years. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️So today I ordered the floss pack and correct cloth. It’s probably a good thing because like you, I prefer red and white too. I downloaded and printed out the FQS planning calendar too so I won’t get so confused. Have a Happy 4th!

I'm not sure yet if I will frame it or finish it myself. I think as I stitch more months I will get a better feel for how I will finish it.

I love doing Christmas in July. It makes me feel cooler in this heat :) As it happened I finished my Feast Frenzy by Dimension a couple of days before The start of July. So I started Believe in Santa, and I’m getting great progress!

What fabric did you use for your flag pillow?
How do you purchase the fabric you use? Do you buy really large pieces and cut them down, or do you have a craft store cut them for you? And how do you choose what fabric to use, does the pattern tell you? I’m just jumping in to cross stitch. I bought a couple kits from Fat Quarter Shop after your live, but am curious about buying everything separately.
Cross Stitch fabric is sold in different sized pieces. I use the cross stitch calculator to figure out how big of a piece I need before purchasing. If you're buying from FQS, they usually link or show you under the pattern what you need. If you're just starting out I would buy and use the recommended fabric until you get comfortable stitching and picking your own.

Card making and video content is my full time job that I work on M-F during "work hours" so quilting and cross stitch are my hobbies that I do evenings/weekends.

Railroading with cross stitch refers to placing your needle through the 2 strands of floss, splitting them, before going back down through your fabric. This can be helpful when you feel like your floss is twisty or your stitches aren't looking as nice. I can demo this next week. :)

So, another excellent video! I'm hoping to get started on the Lizzy Kate Christmas rules, do some more on my grandson's Christmas stockings, and knock out a couple pin pillows this month. Oh, and I did sign up for the FQS SAL of the months -- Season 2. That should all be appearing soon so I'll try to get the frame done too and July -- though maybe not before your next video or sew along if you do another one! :) I have not done a quilt with multiple blocks since my very first sampler quilt! Your fabric selections are so summery on these quilts! That quilt is going to be amazing -- it already is but the finished product is going to be just incredible! I'm excited about your SAL, I love fall, I think something on the small side is a good idea for newbies (and people coming back to stitching after 35 years) who already have tons of stuff they are getting back into. :) Have a great Fourth!
Another great flosstube - thank you. I’m hoping to take part in the mystery Letters to Santa stitch along. Got the first week’s pattern. Now I’m just waiting on the fabric arriving. Had trouble sourcing Chalkboard Aida in the UK.
I am going to do the FQS Boo Crew SAL, also my first SAL, and I also love Halloween decor. I have downloaded the first section and the supply list. I will use DMC floss but will have to use plain white AIDA cloth since I was too late to get the purple and I don't want to dye my AIDA. Hope it works out. Or I do have a piece of White Birch Heatherfield, 26 count (it looks like birch bark, with grey flecks mixed into a cream background) What do you think? I am just worried the ghost won't look good against the white AIDA. BTW, finished "Visit a Haunted House" on my Halloween Rules.
I wouldn't stitch the Boo Crew on white because the letters are outlined in white as well as the ghost unless you want to change your floss colors. I would pick a colored fabric. I'm not using the purple, but a gray aida: shrsl.com/3lmrs

I'm not experienced at sewing. It's been a very long time. You say you zig zag flossing fabric. Do you always have to cut it and prep it yourself or can you buy it already done?

Railroading refers to placing your needle between 2 strands of floss when going down through the fabric, to help with twisting. I can demo this in the next Flosstube. Needle minders are magnetic to hold your needle. I actually don't use them, but collect them. ha!

I love your FlossTube videos! You are amazing, Nichol! ❤ Here's my question - say you see a fabric collection that makes you drool, so you HAVE to have it, but you don't yet have a plan for its use. How do you determine how much of it to get? And do you usually get some yardage of each of the designs in the collection, or just a handful of the designs?
If I like the majority of the designs in a collection and I don't have a specific quilt in mind I will buy the fat quarter bundle. If I only like some of the collection I will buy 1/2 yards (usually) of the fabrics I like or that I know will go with other fabric I own. If there are good stripes I will buy 1 -2 yards for future bindings. Great backings, I will buy 5-6 yards.
