Located directly north of Coimbra, the Bussaco Palace is idyllically perched high on a hill in the heart of the Bussaco National Park, a 250 acres of lush forest planted by the Barefoot Carmelites in the 17th century and one of the most spectacular Portuguese landscapes. Resplendent in its overwhelming Manueline-gothic architecture, this legendary castle was built between 1888 and 1912 for the last Kings of Portugal and converted into a deluxe hotel in 1917.
Its impeccable service, imposing period façade, unmistakably romantic grand interiors and magnificent state rooms brimming with Portuguese charm. Its exquisite collection of artworks and fine “azulejos”, Moorish style royal dining room offering award wining gourmet cuisine and world famous Buçaco house wines, make it one of the world’s most beautiful and historic Portuguese hotels.
Its walking paths, chapels, belvederes, viewpoints, stations-of-the-Cross and Monastery of the Holly Cross still exemplify the rarefied atmosphere of serenity and peace of a very special place.
