Come with me and share the experience of crossing the largest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world and get a taste of the famous Passadiços do Paiva (Paiva Walkways).
The 516 Arouca bridge is the largest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world and is located in Arouca, in the Aveiro district, Portugal next to the famous Passadiços do Paiva.. With 516 meters in length, and an elevation of 175 meters, it connects the banks of the Paiva River. While crossing the bridge, you will have a breathtaking view over Garganta do Paiva and Cascata das Aguieiras, both geosites of the UNESCO Arouca Geopark territory.
Crossing 516 Arouca bridge is an incredible experience, but there is so much more to enjoy.Whether from the top of the bridge, or on the footpaths that leads to its entrances, there is a unique surrounding nature, largely in its pure state, which catches the eye.In this area classified as Rede Natura 2000, more attentive visitors can observe several and magnificent species, from the great short-toed eagle to the small strawberry butterfly, in what is also the natural habitat of roe deer, wild rabbits, red squirrels, otters, Iberian wolves, round-winged eagles and more. There are hundreds of animals, some of them at risk of extinction, that find a perfect refuge here. A region where flora is also vast and rich throughout all seasons of the year.A scenario full of charms where the well-known Paiva Walkways are located, the Aguieiras waterfall, the recreational areas of Areinho and Vau, privileged areas for the practice of whitewater sports.A unique environment that makes 516 Arouca even more special.
See and discover every detail by taking a guided walk with Ambience Grid.

Can I ask, how did you get back to your car on the other side? Did you take a taxi or did you walk back on Paiva stairs and across bridge again?

Hi Cheryl, hope everything is well with you. So, if you go early in the morning you can always walk back before they close the bridge (when it’s becoming dark). But in my case I opted for coming back by taxi/jeep. At the end of every side there’s always taxis and jeeps for larger groups to take you to near your car. It’s around 15€ but in my opinion I definitely recommend it. It allows you to go at an easy pace and enjoy the views and experience without being worried with the time or being to tired 👍🏽 I hope this answers your question. Big hug from Portugal 🇵🇹
