"There a big hole on this one?"..."uh, Yep" | High Water Myrkdal

  • The boys didn't waste any time to get me straight into the stouts for my first day ever in Norway. We put onto the Myrkdal-selva which is one of the sickest runs, but generally done lower. Once on the water the boys made it clear it was higher than they expected, but that didn't stop us. They just gave me beta the whole way with no scouting. After the first big sequence I was definitely gripped, but I started to get more comfortable as the day went on. It was a a hell of a first day, plenty of stout holes, and nothing but good times.

    Dane, you always have the best helmet cam videos. I believe it is because of your great paddling posture, which keeps your head upright and centered over your boat.
    It is so refreshing to watch your videos with whitewater sounds and no music.

    It's really nice to hear Adrian's succinct and to the point descriptions. I remember my first run down the Green Narrows with Leland Davis giving me a very similar set of instructions. Good times! :-)
    I had to smile when I heard Adrian say that with everyone else they would scout the next rapid but that you were just going run it. That Myrkdal-selva sure looks like fun, especially with the crew you ran it with!

      It is somewhat of a skill built up over time, but an important one. It's worth taking the time to try to become good at giving beta, your friends will thank you. The most important thing of beta is not giving too much information, just keep it simple.

    I love all of you guys. your videos are so great, cause they are entertaining but in the same time even a not so epxerienced kayaker like myself, I can actually learn things from your videos. @waynefatguyinakayak7408 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's pretty much a forum for anything you can think of, but your best bet is to look up local businesses in your area that specialize in whitewater, visit them in person, and find out if they offer instruction or can point you towards someone who does. Many can outfit you with all the equipment you'll need for their classes, so you can decide if you want to make the investment to buy your own after trying out the sport.

    What does “beta” refer to? I’m just a fan, not a kayaker.

    • @danejacksonkayak
      @danejacksonkayak  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically information on the run or the rapids or something you need to know about the river. Someone usually gives you beta on where to go, things to look out for etc.
