  • The strawman fallacy is a common fallacy that occurs when a person oversimplifies or distorts another person's claim in order show that it's a ridiculous or negative take, and therefore should be readily dismissed.
A blatant example of the straw man fallacy occurred in an interview between Cathy Newman and Jordan Peterson--where Cathy employed this tactical fallacy in order to discredit Dr. Peterson.

Yes, all things being equal. That is when BOTH parties know the rules of debate having been educated on how debates work. I’ve been in lots of debates with talented folks who know this is a logical fallacy but, as a tactic, try to sneak it in anyway. The problem of calling ALL responses that LOOK like a mischaracterization “straw man” is it leaves no room for realizing the person simply misunderstands your point. Pointing out logical fallacies on debate stages is excellent. Targeting them in interpersonal relationships is simply sabotaging. I’m getting more and more clients - thank you very much - who use videos such as this to lambast their spouses. Please don’t do this. Interpersonal communication is engineered to be messy. This should encourage us to work harder and dig deeper to both explain and be understood NOT point out logical fallacies as if we were debating a resurrected Sir Antony Flew (my favorite philosopher). The JP video used here is a great example of how wrong it is to point out a logical fallacy for this is like a 1:1 hoops tournament between Lebron James & Danny Devito. How do you know the reporter is intentionally misconstruing. That’s mind reading on your part by the way (i.e., a cognitive distortion). She disagrees but may actually no know why. Reporters aren’t often the most skilled in debate. Their hired to look good on camera. Bottom line: Leave targeting of logical fallacies for the debate stage and out of your personal relationships. #DocHeath #TherapyBitesPodcast

It's misrepresentation or mischaracterization of the interlocutor's argument.

One example: any argument for social democratic policies (or even Democrat policies) being presented as an argument for communism!
