Fun fact: when Hammer came out, his brand was a “wholesome and friendly rapper”. Other rappers thought he was soft. They soon found out, he was not as he stepped to many a rapper face to face to ask if they had a problem with him and they backed down. Hammer was nice but absolutely no punk 😩😩

He was also pretty much "acceptable" among audiences who hadn't listened to rap before. Like, there were little girls in the suburbs doing dance routines to this song at their school talent shows, where there was no way a lot of their parents would have considered rap appropriate music even a year earlier, aside from a couple of gimmick songs.

MC Hammer was EVERYTHING for 3 years running. His “Pray” is the greatest. Talent, generosity, faith. He had it all. Ex-military, he hired 100s of dancers to tour with him, all regular kids off the streets. Trained them, work outs, no drugs . . . His generous nature was his downfall - it couldn’t support the weight of all those ppl and he lost millions, tried to go hard core rap, realized he needed to go back to his faith and true self. He’s got a great story - check it out. So very talented.

I was a kid, maybe 12years old, who loved taking dance lessons when this song came out. Hammer popularized the pants, we called them hammer pants and everyone wanted them. For our dance recital that year my class got to choose our costumes and we wore gold sequined hammer pants with neon crop tops. I added a side pony tail and a gold sequin headband- Rambo style, LMOA!!! We had photos taken.
I had long forgot about this till I am visiting my 80year old father a little while back. Even though he has a iPhone and iPad full of current pictures, he tells me he still keeps photos of all his kids in his wallet to show people. So I ask to see mine... it's me, in my hammer pants, pink neon 1/2 top and pony. I just imagined my dad describing me to some stranger, "my youngest, I'm so proud, she is a sales rep for a big company and has traveled extensively. Here's what she looks like"

Yes, we all loved MC Hammer and so many of the early 90s acts. They had energy. I remember trying to dance to this when I was a kid, trying the moves in the video. NOPE. You needed endurance just to be able to do some of the stuff for more than 1 minute. Watch a live MC Hammer performance. He and his crew were doing that for long stretches at a time. The desire to dance to this music gave you reason to keep up your cardio. BTW that side shuffle is iconic. LOL
Also gotta say, I'm not really surprised you young guys haven't heard of this music. Your ears are likely bombarded by the new "pop" music and commercials. Music that's older tends to get relegated to "classics", "oldies", "retro", "old school", "throwback", etc. I get it. That's what radio does, pushes the new. But I'm glad you guys are taking an interest in the old music, even if it's just for developing your channel. If you have a broader perspective, or greater knowledge and experience, and you learn from that, then marketing will have less effect on you and whatever new songs come out, if they suck, you won't be fooled to believe they are good. Good luck.

Gentlemen, thank you for bringing me so much joy. Y’all are hilarious. I’m ready for my 3 wishes had me dying!
I have been a high school teacher for 22 years. Our school has been shut down since March, due to Coronavirus. I know you’re a bit older than my kiddos, but watching you be silly and have fun reminded me of the young adults at school who I miss terribly. I love how you are open to new ideas, and so positive! Most people assume older generations’ music is terrible, but you seem to listen with no assumptions, and even point out the parts you like, and compliment the talent of the artists. Hang onto that attitude! Everyone has something to contribute, not just in music, but in life. If you approach every idea, situation, and person with that same curious and genuine heart, you will lead this world with the excellence we need. Thank you again. Please know there’s a nerdy old white lady out there who adores you.
