    I just heard Julie's story about becoming a royal commentator. She was teaching yoga in London when contacted from someone working at the BBC. She was asked to do an interview because she was an American who married into the British Aristocracy at the time Harry and Meghan were about to announce their engagement. She had no prior experience as a journalist but that interview went worldwide. Within hours her phone started blowing up and she was asked to do several interviews as well as being a commentator for the BBC on the day of Harry and Meagan's wedding. It is an incredible story and amazing how well spoken she is. She also has her own youtube channel called American Viscountess.

      The Kardashians have their own youtube channels too. Yes, a person can speak in her native tongue - it's a miracle. Actually, I find everything she does to be pretty kitschy. And yes, English is my 7th language (in order of acquisition - to a various degree). Oh, the advantage of conquering the world. Then completing a sentence in the only language one knows is considered to be a major achievement, a pompous style is admired and chintzes and idiotic flower dresses are required. I am grateful to our founders for the fact that I don't have to have chintzes and wear idiotic dresses. The jeans are just fine.

    This is the way we eat in Europe not just in England! And you don't have to be royal!!! We all eat like that.

    • @kari8187
      @kari8187 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s how children are taught to eat here until they have better coordination then they use only one hand, usually the right to feed themselves. It keeps elbows off the table and less noise from cutlery . Butter knives are used for spreading things on bread and not much else.

      Not being mean but what's the difference between royal and aristocratic?

    • @sinogarcon
      @sinogarcon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Being a royal, one normally wouldn't pop in a talk show, particularly a gossipy one. So an aristocrat is the next best thing as a guest, being still know the basic high-class etiquette.

    • @sinogarcon
      @sinogarcon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      A royal is someone descended (within recent generations) down from a present or previous nation-ruling family. Someone who has prince/princess title in their name is a sure thing for a royal, but not all royals have the prince/princess title, like Prince Edward's son and daughter do not have the prince and princess title, though they have lordship and ladyship prefix in their names, because Prince Edward was also awarded with an aristocratic peerage title: Earl of Wessex. Also with no titles are Princess Anne's son and daughter, though they even do not have lordship and lady prefix because their mother does not have a peerage, whilst their father refused a peerage. Now peerage is the one you would call aristocracy, like Duke, Marguess, Earl, Viscount (the guest woman's husband is a one), and Baron. Usually they can be inherited through limitless generations as long as they have legal and blood descendants (mostly sons to sons, rarely daughters but still exist), rather like family's special heirloom. In a hierarchy society, a peer is usually a class below only to the royals and above all the other commoners, and enjoy certain legal previleges but nowadays mostly abolished even in Britain. The current only state previleges for a peer in UK is sitting in legislatures (with limited rights and not all of them) and possibly take part in the King's or Queen's one and only coronation state ceremony (the last time was more than 60 years ago and time has changed a lot). Of course, other kudoos are more to specific individuals and commericial venues, like a hot restaurant may get one a table if one is an aristocrat etc.

    • @sinogarcon
      @sinogarcon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think it's a cultural thing. Americans tend to cut the food, then leave the knife alone

    • @tanjacavalli885
      @tanjacavalli885 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      which is perfectly ok, but she makes it sound like something sooooo classy and difficult, done only by aristocrats, which is BS. It's no big deal in Europe, and it's not difficult if you learn it by four. Like eating with chopsticks, I struggle ... but for Chinese children it's just normal.

    • @sinogarcon
      @sinogarcon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nevertheless, it is still a cultural difference. And given her background, the transition may even steeper than the then young Lady Diana who after all came from a very posh and old British noble family. Even for her, I've heard that some relative or friend warned her before marriage that the royal family wasn't like any other family, even for aristocratic ones.

    For everyone so concerned about how to hold one's eating implements, consider this: keeping one's fork in the left hand and knife in the right is usually referred to as the European or Continental style and its use is not restricted to the British Isles. Many Canadians and Australians, especially if both their parents' families originated in the U.K or Europe, continue to eat this way or use a modified version in that they will use the Continental system for food that requires cutting but will put the knife down and transfer the fork to the right hand to eat food that is already bite-sized like peas or cut green beans, etc. People ate with just a knife and their fingers before forks were invented. If you were adding a utensil (the fork) to your eating kit, it makes sense to keep the knife where you've always held it and add the fork in the left hand. Most people are right-handed and have more difficulty using a knife in their left hand, but a fork can be managed by most in either hand. So, it really does make sense to keep the knife in the right hand and move the food to your mouth with the left. Different places, different customs. In this day and age, it shouldn't make much difference which system one employs as long as basic manners, courtesy, and respect rule the table.
    I have a secret for you unitiated Americans: Europeans tend to eat their salad after the main course because it acts as a palate cleanser. Egad! and Horrors!

    I don't think Meghan Markle will have to set her own table. Also, this woman's husband is not royal but comes from an aristocrat family.

    • @paulanthony8080
      @paulanthony8080 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Her husband is a member of a noble family, which is below royalty. Her husband isn't related to the royal family, in order to be a royal. You have to be a member of the royal family which her husband is not. Aristocrats belong to the upper class and often in Europe have hereditary titles like her husband. They also used to have privileges but now not anymore.

    • @paulanthony8080
      @paulanthony8080 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +casal14 It was incredibly cringey especially watching as a Brit. She should know this since she has been married for more than 10 years. Most of the things she said was pure nonsense, since she isn't royal I doubt that she has ever curtsied, let alone to any member of the royal family. And I am pretty sure Meghan isn't ever going to have to set up her own table, I mean they have servants for that.

    • @Deborah-kz1bv

      Paul Anthony
      On Ladies Of London, she said her husband is thirty third ( if I remember correctly ),
      in line to the throne. So, if that's true, then I am confused. Is her husband still an aristocrat, if that is the case?

    • @paulanthony8080
      @paulanthony8080 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Autumn Season I just looked up the sucession list and her husbands name isn't on it at place thirty third is Lyla Gylman granddaughter of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. So I don't know what she's talking about, as far as I know her husband isn't related to the royal family at all.
      Okay now I know what she's talking about, her husband is number 340 something in line to the throne lol. That does not make him a royal, he is at best distantly related to probably a past member of the royal family. But to go around saying her husband is royalty is grossly exaggerated.

    • @sinogarcon
      @sinogarcon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's not cringey. I don't think a royal will just pop around to an entertainment talk show, so one had to make do with the next best thing, an aristocrat. And even though she's not royal, being married into an aristocratic family from outside, the learning experience is kind similar, though less steep. Anyway basic highclass etiquette will be similar, like curtsy, etc.

    The knife and fork eating and surprisingly not hard to get used to---yes, I can attest to this having had a British boyfriend. I'm from CA and I eat what is the natural way of eating in CA. Another one---though not a huge surprise--is the manner of speaking. My British BF command of English and the manner in which he spoke, communicated is articulate, eloquent, witty, clear, and precise. His/their vocabulary and the care he/they to put in effective communication is just refreshing. The British speaking English versus Americans speaking English is, for the most part, not a fair comparison. I think the British educational system, though not perfect, is far better than the American public school system.

    Julie earned her stripes accordingly by staying with Luke, even through his addiction caused by wrong prescription, even when she ended up being the bread winner of their family. They've been married since 2005 - and going strong until today. She got welcomed because she respected the family tradition and fully intent to keep it. Unlike a certain actress who bolted because she couldn't handle not being the star of the RF.

    Julie Montague is a member of the aristocracy (by marriage) and even then only a middle ranking one (when her husband becomes the Earl of Sandwich he will still be outranked by a Marquess or a Duke).She is NOT a royal and neither is her husband. The Royal Family is confined to the Monarch (and spouse) and their immediate blood relatives. The aristocracy are merely what you might call landed gentry.

      their family is extremely important historically. far more than just the sandwich. also, the person the order of the garter was inspired by in the legend of the founding was a montagu as well, same family... the king tied a garter around her leg after it fell to the floor saying 'honi soit qui mal y pense' shame on him who thinks evil of it and now you have the queen and the knights of the garter dressing up in blue velvet robes and hats with ostrich feathers every year and parading in windsor... they have also been aristocrats long before the windsors arrived in the uk. remember, the royals were virtually nobodies until they came to england. they are from a minor german family.

      HAHAHAHAHA "the royals were virtually nobodies until they came to England. They are from a minor German family. Prince Philip's grandfather was the King of Greece and the royal house was House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha which is a cadet branch of the House of Wettin founded in the 10th century. the greek royals were penniless from the start. from a good family, the danish royals yeah but sent to dirty athens with no money, have you ever seen the 'palaces' the greek royals used...villas. the house of saxe coburg and gotha is a cadet branch of a better house, yes but at the time of the marriage to queen victoria it wasn't very prestigious and it was still more noble than royal. prince alberts style was serene highness wasnt it...thats one of the lowest styles in the 'highness' ranks and its not considered royalty, its aristocracy...prob the equivalent of a british duke, not equivalent to a british prince, russian grand duke or austrian archduke etc.

When I see women over extending the leg cross like Julie Monetgue, my mind immediately goes back to that lesson.
