Hey everyone, with the final part released I'd like to thank everyone who is watching the series and a special thanks to those who have purchased the course available at blendermarket.com/products/game-character-tutorial-series. The complete course includes videos for download, detailed step-by-step tutorial notes, starting files and the finished character (or you could jump on the Patreon for a month, download what you want and then bounce). Happy Blendering and feel free to leave comments on what game development tutorials you may want to see next!
For naming the meshes, you can use the batch rename tool, by clicking CTRL + F2 and using the suffix option with either "_high" or "_low" written in the text box.
This is an incredible series. From a beginner, I want to say THANK YOU. I do have a question. Do you have any guidance on how to go about making hair? Even if it’s on your Patreon or anything? I’m following the series, but my character is more human-like than you and needs hair and eyebrows. I really don’t know when in the process I should add it, or even the slightest clue how. People are saying for games to use Hair Cards, but I can’t find a proper beginner tutorial for how to do this in Blender, let alone make sure it’s safe for Unity. Any help would be appreciated and thanks again for this amazing series. I can’t believe I have almost a complete character model now, all thanks to you!
Thank you for the kind words. A tutorial for game ready hair is something I'm considering, but currently don't have. However I can give you a few pointers. Game ready hair is a two part process. You need alpha textures for different parts of the hair and you need to model hair cards on your character with those alpha textures applied. Making the textures can be a bit tricky, so if you're just starting out and just want to do the modelling part, have a search for free hair textures like on this website: opengameart.org/content/hair-alphas-for-days To do the modelling, you can make use of splines with the hair cards attached. Splines are used to more easily manipulate geometry as you only need to move a few points to fashion the hair around the character. Most tutorials have a focus on using this spline technique to create stylised hair, but the same process can be used for low poly cards. Have a search for how to create stylised hair in Blender and a bunch of spline tutorials should pop up. Have a good one.
Thanks so much for the quick reply! Since the video isn’t exactly new, I wasn’t expecting a reply at all. So it means a lot! Sincerely. I’ve put my character creation on hold at this part of the series, and googled and asked on forums for the last 3 days for how to approach this, so giving me these search terms is absolute gold! Never came across the term “spline” before so again, thank you! When in the character creation process should I do this? I’m assuming now while I’m doing the low and high poly meshes and completed the head retopo, correct? Before I move onto your baking and rigging videos?
Considering the hair is going to be quite separate from the rest of the character (separate hair texture and no need to make a high poly version), you can pretty much do this process whenever you like, so long as you have your head mesh to use as reference for where the hair goes. But doing it now sounds like a good idea so you have a more complete character when going through the texturing.
Excellent! I can’t thank you enough for this series as well as your replies to my specific questions. I am debating on the Hair Tool Addon for Blender, to hopefully simplify the Hair Card creation process further if making these cards myself ends up being a bit more than I chew. I’ll see how it goes. But all in all you’ve given me enough information to work with and I look forward to finishing up this hair and following along with the next video in the series!
@@ironbarkgames this is just what i was looking for! i'd already made hair cards with textures but i needed to know how to model them onto the head, and you saved my life!! amazing tutorial series, amazing advice and thank you so much for all of this

Amazing tip!
The "Suffix" method can be accessed from this menu when you switch the "Type" to "Set Name".
