  • The 300th video on the channel. St Michael's church in Aslacton has a ring of five bells that are hung in the round tower. The bell frame was made in c1614 by Thomas Dymee (or Dymond), of which he made only two recorded bell frames, the other being at St Stephen's in Norwich which houses the unringable ring of three.
Aslacton bells are particularly special, however, with them all having been cast by William Brend. These are one of only three complete rings of bells cast by William Brend, and the only ringable peal (the others being 2 unringable 3's). The treble, 2nd and tenor were cast in 1607, the 4th being the oldest having been cast in 1604 and the 3rd being the youngest having been cast in 1614. All of the bells are recorded as being 'listed' for preservation. The bells are hung with an anticlockwise rope circle, and were last rehung in 1978 by Local labour/guild/association, before then last being rehung in 1889 by George Day & Sons. The bells were last 'tuned' in 1614, when the final bell was cast and the bells were hung together as the ring of five that hang today.
The bells are quite difficult to ring and strike, but sound particularly good together. The tenor weighs 7.5cwt and is tuned to 'Ab'.

There not a brilliant anticlockwise ring of 5 but it's a beautiful place.
