  • There is a ring of eight bells hung in St Michael & All Angels church in Whitwell. The ring of six were augmented and rehung in 1979 by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, at which time the ringing room was moved to the present mezzanine floor from the ground floor, and the rope circle changed from anticlockwise to clockwise. Because of the small tower, the bells are hung on 2 levels, which makes for very poor acoustics and the ropes are heavily drawn in the clock chamber, the treble in particular. The rope circle is very small, and that means that good handling is a must, as it is very easy to catch a rope of the bell next to you. The bells are easy to strike, but because of the poor acoustics it makes ringing very difficult. With the rope circle being small, it entices bands to ring quickly, so quarters of Major on all 8 can come round in under 40 minutes.
The two trebles were cast in 1979 by Whitechapel Bell Foundry. The 3rd by Lester & Pack in 1766, the 4th in 1729 by Thomas Gardiner and the 5th in 1661 by John Darbie. The back three were all cast in C1440 by William Chamberlain. The tenor weighs 8-3-22cwt and is tuned to A.
