    One positive thing about locking progression to side quests is that it allows the side quests to be more interesting because the NPCs can react to the events of the world.

    This title of this review has me Torna part.
    Seriously though, I'm totally grabbing the physical release for this. Monolith Soft is on a roll. I wish there were some way to implement the Driver-Blade swapping mechanic into the main game

    Torna is a focused, condensed, streamlined slice of XC2 that managed to have its own special flavor. I agree Torna is the best designed Titan yet!
    The community system is great at getting me to know every NPCs, learning their quirks and dreams, falling in love with the people of Torna...and hence, making the ending even more impactful and tragic. It adds so much depth and pathos to Jin and Mythra's characters! Such a beautiful and sad tale...

      My mind is twisted about the community system. The point is that each time there is a change it comes up and interrupts me playing and this is something i simply hate. I prefer the system used in Xenoblade Chronicles X which is much more discreet.
      The game itselfs is fantastic and i like that mythra. And i would welcome Minoth to XC2.

      You can make it somewhat less bothersome by turning off registration animations in settings, but this only helps when you first meet a person, you still have to endure them being added on to your community.

    The DLC also has that extra emotional edge because you're coming in already completing the main game, so your already know what happens to these characters in the end...

    I really don't think this would be a good first dive into Alrest, just because it spoils the ever-loving crap out of XC2's story within the first few minutes. Also, I really like the combat system in TGC too much at this point. If I picked this up first, then grabbed XC2, I'd have trouble really getting into it.
    That said, I loved just about everything about TCG. The massive pile of mandatory "side quests" that seem to be dividing folks *are* the story. Nearly every one of them is an exercise in world-building, much like the surprisingly lengthy side quests in XCX that sneak up on you when you find yourself needing to rake in the gold because you whoopsed your skell insurance away and need the credits faster than your probes can bring them in. Basically, while XC2 has a long central plot with scattered and disjointed minor subplots, TGC has a short central plot thread and a wide series of interwoven subplots concentrated around it.
    In XC2, it feels like Rex is only really known to a small handful of people all the way to the end of the game. In TGC, everyone knows you and your whole dang party by the end.
    Edit: Also, I actually enjoyed taking the healer role in TGC. It always felt really awkward to me in XC2, but in TGC, it just felt natural. Seriously loved the mechanics in this game.

    • @PyraXadon
      @PyraXadon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly I think that's an issue with the sense of scale. TTGC has only 1.5 titans, so focusing their efforts on creating one fleshed out titan is a lot easier than making 8 different ones on the same scale. XC2 does still make the sidequests more fun imo due to streamlining all of the key ones that you take as questlines instead of just one off tasks/favors.
      That being said, while your argument is sound, by virtue of game design, 'side quests' should NOT be mandatory. Sure people who play JRPGs are used to side quests and commonly do them because it's something that we as fans of the genre are drawn to doing, making it mandatory as a roadblock for the player is one of the worst narrative choices they could've made. Malos has activated the Tornan Titan, the city is in disarray, the fate of the world is on the line, so the next logical step narrative-wise is to go up and stop him, right? Nah. First clean up some litter around the city's yard, give a dude some fish, a kid some bugs, and help a brother out with his love life.
      Why would you force the player do a bunch of chores RIGHT before heading up to fight the final boss? It's just padding at the wrong point of time in the game. Sure world building is great and all, but there's a time and place for everything. And you can't even get community lvl 4 prior to the sidequest grind. Hell I did everything I had before getting needing to get community 2 and I still didn't have enough.

    • @StopChangingUsernamesYouTube
      @StopChangingUsernamesYouTube 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, you're right about making the side quest wall. I personally would've done them anyway without the walls, especially since they all felt more approachable and interesting than in XC2, but it did frustrate a lot of people who just wanted the trunk of the story. I think it could have been pulled off more gracefully in a longer game, by providing a more indirect incentive to complete them, like gold or experience.

    • @Statistic189
      @Statistic189 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      False, it spoils nothing. At all.

    • @StopChangingUsernamesYouTube
      @StopChangingUsernamesYouTube 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Statistic189 I'm not sure where to begin with this. Actual chapter 3-10 spoilers contained in TGC below the "read more".
      Within a few hours, you're not only familiar with Torna being a titan and not just a small organization, you're aware of flesh eaters, blade eaters, Amalthus not being the mostly hoopy frood he seemed to be when he first showed up in XB2, Jin's pre-XB2 role, Malos being an aegis, Mythra and artifices even existing, the part about core crystals containing the genetic information of every living thing in Alrest, and that blades turn into titans. It sucks the impact out of every little tweest in the story of XB2.

    • @peen2804
      @peen2804 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The community aren't good examples of well executed world building, they're forced side quests that do nothing but set up a random party character to have a line or two of unvoiced dialogue to reinforce or introduce aspects of their personalities. Idk they're just collection quests and a handful of combat challenges. I took my time with them and tried to enjoy to community aspect of the game since I knew it was required going in, but god damn I just wanted to get through them for the next actual story section. The girl trying to become an experienced driver is a good example of trying to make you care about shit you probably don't care about, they just want you to use the crafting system they spent time and money on. Not the most offensive quests ever, but I don't see how they aren't as basic as a video game quest could be.

    I can understand liking the new soundtrack a lot (I do too, the remix of a certain character's battle theme is gorgeous and better than the original, Auresco's themes are lovely and the main battle theme is great, if not a tad repetitive in the long run), but I can not comprehend how anyone could like it MORE than the main game's. There's barely 10 new songs total, some of which are remixes of old songs. The main game completely dwarfs it in quantity (some 120 tracks), and easily equals it in quality. The lack of day and night overworld theme was also disappointing in Torna. Torna's main theme is great, yes, but it just can't compete against the combined might of Gormott's, Uraya's, Mor Ardain's, Tantal's AND Leftheria's both day and night themes all at once, and that's not even touching on the great variety of battle themes (both regular, named enemy AND boss themes), event music (The Decision, Tomorrow With You), town music, particular area music (Gormotti Forest, Land of Morytha, etc.). Don't get me wrong, I love both games' music to bits, but it just boggles my mind that anyone would pick Torna's over the main game's if given the choice.

      @Sammy Star
      Whether or not it impacts the story does not in any way make it ok for Monolithsoft to have to require the player to do these sidequests to beat the game. The more logical choice was to just let the player have freedom with what they wanted to do. There's even a warning to the player that they've reached the final boss of TTGC, and that alone is enough to let players decide whether or not they want to tackle it while giving them the freedom to go back and complete any remaining side objectives they want to complete.
      Furthermore, adding to a story does not always need to be so intrusive. Take Bioshock. The majority of Rapture's lore is hidden in audio diaries scattered throughout the city. You're not required to find them, but it gives optional player incentive to go out and search for them should they want to learn more about this city under the ocean. They impact the story by giving the player a bigger picture to everything, but it's not so in your face about it that you NEED to do it. TTGC's sidequests do help the player learn and understand more about Alrest 500 years prior to the main game, but given how they're painted as optional objectives means that by virtue of game design, the player is not required to do them in order to complete the game.

    • @sammystar829
      @sammystar829 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PyraXadon No I hear ya. Some people like doing side quest all at once and some don't. So maybe this could of be tackled a different way to make both sides happy.

    Definitely have to agree with you. They did so much stuff better in a way I would wish the main game had those changes possible.
    Playing as Blade was awesome, Vanguard system is awesome, having field skills all the time is awesome. Camping and crafting really made an improvement to in depth character development as well as to how the game progresses. It overall felt more real, especially since there was no bouncy stuff and "Ayaaah!"(Just cant forget the first time starting XC2 ^^;)
    All in all I'm quite sad it's so short, and I did not get all the answers I wanted, but a lot of things were cleared and sorted out for me.
    Biggest surprises for me have been Addam's second Blade and the ending. Did not quite expect that.
    Loved it and only missing the last 3 super bosses. Think NG+ has to hold up for those since I dont like grinding after doing pretty much everything else.

      I think Torna is hands down the better game, but story wise it might be best to start with xc2 (even though I think tgc has a better story as well)

      I did it in 15 the main story only like 9 hours. Nintendo lied about it being 70% the length of the main story.

    Not sure if should be called dlc. More like a Expansion to main game would be better. But its still less than expansion.
    Also for people complaining abauth community, its lore more of less. Adam did help a lot of people like a hero.

    In my opinion, Torna DLC opens up some more plot holes and leaves others unanswered. I like how blades have more usefulness in battle, but being locked to just using plot blades is just boring. Filling out the affinity chart is even more of a chore. Adaam's militia group does nothing. There is talk about monsters being forced from there homes, but nothing further is explored about it. Jin and Azurada parting contradicts the opening of the main game. A battle in Genbu and the destruction of Judicum are talked about in main game but never explored. And finally, I still see no good reason why Jin would join with Malos. Even though Mythra bares some responability for the destruction of Torna, the vast majority of the blame lies with Malos. Jin also knows why Pyra was created then sealed away. Heck, he and Lora saw Adaam off before Pyra was sealed. And since Adaam is a bastard, what was the nationality of his mother? Letharian? Knowing exactly what each collection point produces would be more helpful in the main game.

      A good amount of these things do have reasonable answers, but the genbu battle is a bit too much of a plot hole for me, I can take judicium going down long before tgc, along with Jin joining Malos as that has Jin going through centuries of practical depression along with the fact he couldn't end himself, so joining malos is something I can take, but the random battle in genbu that was supposedly uninhabited at the time ( according to tgc, the main game implies it was inhabited) is something I can't really shake off.

    Okay so real talk, I loved XC 1 and played it for hundereds of hours across Wii and 3DS. However XC 2 didn't interest me at all, from the first trailer I saw I disliked the game. I know that's kind of shitty for me to do, but the game's aesthetic and characters looked silly.
    Could I get into this one? Is it closer to XC 1? I dunno I just want to give XC 2 a go but each time I think about it I get turned off.

    TGC's battle system is what XBC2's battle system should have been. It actually makes me a bit sad that it isn't. Hopefully, if they make a XBC3 (and they keep the Blade system or something similar) they'll keep and improve on these game mechanics.

    I love your content and xenoblade 2 is one of my favorite rpgs of all time, but I hated this DLC even more than I thought I would when I found out they were wasting writing and development on a prequel.
    The story was just as depressing as I thought it would be. That’s the problem with prequels their job is to show how the world got so bad that it needed saving in the first place. Plus there can’t be any resolution or the main game wouldn’t have happened. So we knew all the main story beats going in and it didn’t even show some of the more interesting scenes I was expecting, the combat wasn’t as much fun to me with less blades, and I actually thought that Deathstar Torna got what it deserved when it sunk!
    I didn’t get to see what Adam thought of Pyra, or even a single conversation between her and the other characters. I was really looking forward to at least the scene where they decided to sink her in the cloud sea, or Adam charging Gramps with looking after Leftheria!
    Overall, not a game I will likely ever play again and one more reason I should protest prequels instead of supporting them. At least the rest of the DLC was great, here’s hoping for a xenoblade 2-3 or whatever that actually continues the story where it left us hanging!

    As I’ve said multiple times, this is so much better than the main game. There is not one thing the main game does better. Better combat, better graphics, better UI, better characters, better mechanics, (so far) better story, better music, better everything. I cannot believe how incompetent the main game is in comparison. I wouldn’t mind if xc3 was like this.

      How delusional are you? Sure, while there are some new tracks here, all of the boss battle and cutscene tracks were used in the main game (with the exception of the new Malos battle theme). While the combat here progresses more quickly to be engaging, it gets dull quicker than the main game, which isn't an issue since the DLC is a shorter experience. Blade combos being easier now makes them feel less rewarding. Only having the same 3 drivers and 6 blades means there's not any variety to mix up the gameplay. The vanguard switching mechanic was brilliant though. It makes switching feel more important.
      The story of Torna was quicker paced, so we get to the juicy parts quicker. But I dislike how people act like the main game's story is bad because this one has better pacing. The point of this story is to get insight to the main story. It enhances the main story by helping us learn about the heroes of the past and how the recurring characters were influenced in their actions and motives in the main game. Torna is a better built game from the day it launched, but it by no means make the base game incompetent. Torna is a less replayable game than base Xenoblade 2 is.
