    Excellent video. I've winterized my RV many times, but always like to refresh my memory to ensure I don't miss a critical step, and do in correct order/sequence. I have a checklist, but I like your version better, and the level of concise detail in this video is outstanding. Well done. You've earned a thumbs up and a subscription!

    Great video! I use the compressed air method here in Alaska after one year I missed one of the valves at the hot water tank and filled it with AF. Took forever to flush it out the next year. No issues up here with compressed air and AF in the p-traps. I found the detailed explanation great for refreshing my memory. Appreciate the time to creating and posting the video.

    Another great video. I used this method last fall but left the process worried about residual water left in my pump. Using a winterizing valve for this is brilliant. Thank you for this idea. I plumbed one in with an adapted 3/4” female hose thread adapter and immediately heard water come out when applying the air. Thanks again.

    Wow. I've been neglecting to blow out my water pump! (I did always empty the plastic filter cap, though.) I'm glad I watched this video before winterizing tomorrow; I'll remember to do the pump. One thing: I always blow out all my fresh water hoses when I winterize, mostly for peace of mind but also because it's probably a more sanitary way to store them. Thank you for this great video. You may have just saved me a world of pain one year!

    What a great video! It covers many items that are not covered in my manual. I opened my tank drain and let it drain until it stopped. Then I raised and lowered the tongue and didn't see any additional water come out. When I put compressed air in the filler opening about a half gallon to a gallon of water came out. This surprised me to say the least. The other surprise was the black tank flush. When I opened the cap water came out, which must have come from the roof vent somehow. I blew the line out but only loosely put the cap back on so any water that might get in there can still get out. Good tip on blowing air into the winterizing hose to blow out the water pump and emptying the sediment cup. None of these were covered in the manual and this lack of information could be costly in a deep freeze. Thanks for the tips!

    Great video, very complete. Thanks for the lead on the low-point drain valves. I now have some on order. Laying under my trailer removing the plugs is a real pain, and these will make the process much easier. I am a little uneasy about getting all the water out of the pump and pump outlet line with the air-blow method, so I plan to suck a little RV anti-freeze through it just to be sure then air-blow the rest of the lines.

    Ross, We plan to use our 2021 Renegade Villagio often all throughout the Winter season. When not in use, our unit is in our driveway, hooked up to 30 amp shore power with an electric space heater in the coach area as well as the heat pump/furnace set to 60 degrees. We also use a thermometer to monitor the coach temperature from in the house. Our fresh water will be drained and not filled until Spring. The tank is completely inside the coach as is the water pump. The black and grey tanks have heating pads but will be drained before leaving the campgrounds. Also, the drains will be clear of water. We use anti freeze to "flush" the macerator toilet but plan to empty the black and grey tanks before leaving for home. I plan to drain the hot water tank and only fill that at the campsite and empty it before leaving for home. I plan on using the compressed air method with a portable compressor to clear the lines before leaving any campground. Do you see any flaws in this process?

    When our Imagine was new, I winterized it and didn’t put antifreeze into the holding tanks. We had 3 broken waste valves on our first trip in the spring. The dealer and the manufacturer would not cover it because I winterized the trailer. After reading the Imagine forums about this, I found out that the tanks may be tilted so that they don’t drain completely and water is stuck in the valves. Since then, I always add antifreeze to the holding tanks.

    • @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
      @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey June, thanks for watching and commenting. While that sounds possible, I dont think that is the case for a couple reasons. it wouldnt make sense for a manufacturer to tilt a tank away from the drain side. Towards the drain side would make sense. even if it was a poor build from the manufacturer, I would doubt that all 3 tanks were all tilted away, Especially from Grand Design. another reason is that even though tank valves are mounted on the sides of the tank, they are still at the bottom. and even if the tank was tilted towards the valve, water would empty through the valve when you emptied your tank during winterizing. it wouldnt sit against it. the logic doesnt make sense. tank valves are 3-4 inches tall also, so for that much water to sit against a valve that was previously opened and drained doesnt make sense. not saying that frozen water cant destroy a valve, but i just dont see how it is scientically possible using the logic above. unless you drained your tanks with the trailer leaning away, closed the valves, then moved the trailer to where it was leaning towards it. my honest opinion, i just dont think people are draining their tanks completely. something you can do to check this is to let the tank drain completely, leave the valve open, then pour a little antifreeze in the toilet (not much). if you see antifreeze come out of the sewer pipe, you know there is no water against that valve.

    I found your channel recently and have been watching when I can. Thanks for not being an "expert" and for showing your common sense approach to getting things done. I use the air pressure method and never had a problem except once. My 2 way RV refrigerator had an ice maker in it. Forgot all about that little sucker. Yup, water froze in the diverter valve, expanded, and shattered the valve. Didn't know about it until the next time I hooked up the water. Guess it was a good thing it happened because now I never forget to take care of that valve and water line to the ice maker.

      GREAT POINT Tom, I did not even think of talking about built in ice makers. Thanks for adding!

    I agree this is very informative- thank you. My question is after blowing out secondary lines, if we can blow water out of the faucet, shower and toilet via the winterization hose as we did taking water out of the water pump? Maybe the city line is preferable as to not risk damaging the water pump, but it’s convenient to be inside where the winterization hose is and see water come out of the faucets, shower and toilet. If it is acceptable, the water pump should no longer need to be turned on during these steps, right?

    • @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
      @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can connect to the city line outside and leave it connected while inside opening the faucets. Does that answer your question?

    What a great video. Very well done and easy to understand. Thanks for the great work. My question concerns the fresh water tank. I have never used this tank, nor the pump, for as long as I have owned this unit which I bought new. Always only used the city water hookups. Is it necessary to worry about running air through this line and pump during winterizing since it has not been used. My understanding that the fresh water tank is separate from the city water system and can run independently? Thanks for your help.

      You should be good to skip if you never used them. Doesn’t hurt to do them though in case the dealer ran water through the pump to test.

      it can get tricky with all the different appliances... general rule of thumb is to follow the path of water, everywhere it goes needs to be winterized.

    That was one of the most thorough Winterizing Videos I have found yet. Thank you very much. As a new RV owner this year, I have not used the fresh water tank/pump. How can I locate that thing if there is no water in system. Can I still turn the pump on momentarily if no water is in system and not hurt it? Was going to listen for the motor noise to try and locate it. Want to get water out of it if the put water in during PDI. Thanks.

      Hey Mike, thanks for watching. The first thing you should check is the rating on your tires. Never go faster than what’s rated on your tires. In most cases that rating should be over 65 mph, but I think the majority of our viewers will agree 60 to 65 mph is the max they travel.

    Question: if I don't have the fitting to the pump can I just marry them the best I can and accomplish pushing the water out? Also, my filter seems to be on very tight. Is it possible to remove with some sort of tool? Thank you for the thorough explanations.

    • @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
      @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Thomas, you should be fine pushing air anyway you can through that line for a minute or 2 to get enough of the water out. remember, water droplets in the line wont expand enough to crack the lines. as far as the water filter, if you cant get it off by hand and you've blown air through the water pump, you should be fine just leaving it on. as long as air has passed through there you should be good.

    Great video with more detail than I have reviewed anywhere else. One question regarding water not cleared in the area between the water heater and the cold and hot winterization valves. Should compressed air be blown from the city water intake through the water heater while the bottom drain is open before switching the (2 or 3 based on unit) winterization valves? Thanks

    • @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
      @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      thats a great question... the valves should be oriented so that when they are open with the low point drains will drain them. If not, they will drain back into the water heater as the water heater is emptied. I thought about this years ago and couldnt come up with a scenario where water would stay in those lines, but you're thinking analytically, which is great!
      if for some reason those lines were pefectly parallel to the ground, water wouldnt sit in the past the 90 degree T anyway.

    Water heater drain plug remover non-pro tip: if you carry a folding 4-way lug wrench, one of lug wrench ends is likely to fit the drain plug and it has plenty of length to reach the plug with ease.

    Awesome video. I do a quick blowout when the temps start to drop. This makes me less nervous if an unexpected freeze happens and I’m out of town. Then I do a complete blowout, and then run the pink stuff.
    My only suggestion is use real syrup and not the Aunt Jemima lol.

    • @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
      @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the low point drains are most likely after your water pump, and blowing air back through a water pump wont work as it acts like a check valve. just let your fresh tank drain, no need to blow it out.

    Hi Ross, amazing video; many thanks!!!
    A couple of questions -
    1) Do I leave water (e.g 5 gallons) and the chemical in the black/grey water tanks? I know you say to always keep water in them!
    2) What about bleaching the fresh water tank? I've gone my first season without doing this (only found this out late in the season)- should I do it now or in the spring?
    Many thanks,
    Jerry.

      hey bud good to hear from you again.
      after winterizing is the only time you can leave your black tank empty. just remember to put water back in before you use it again in the spring.
      fresh water sanitizing can be done now and in the spring, but it makes the most sense to do it upon dewinterizing in the spring. here is a video on that: th-cam.com/video/j-fmCThdMOw/w-d-xo.html

    I have a question. When the water heater drain plug is open, and before I bypass the water heater, should I blow water into the city water connection? Will that eliminate water that doesn't get eliminated when the water heater is bypassed?

    • @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
      @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Terry, it will help push some water out of the tank but because the tank is such a large area that pressurized air is dispersing once it hits the tank so you’re not getting as much pressure out of the drain, if that makes sense. It won’t hurt anything if you do that, but there’s so little water in the tank after emptying it, even if it freezes it won’t hurt anything.

    I am new to the rv camping world but I just bought a travel trailer with a tankless water heater. May be a dumb question but I am assuming I can skip the bypassing water heater step as my unit doesn’t store water due to it being tankless?
    Another question I had is when you put the antifreeze in at the end you are just putting a small amount through the open drain areas for the sink/toilet/showers just to let it sit in those openings over winter and that’s it correct?
    Thanks again for a very thorough explanation for this newbie!

    • @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS

      I will bring my battery in the garage and put it on a trickle charger for the winter. It gets pretty cold here and low temps can degrade the life of a battery. Plus, I wont have my converter running to charge the battery all winter. Thanks for commenting and watching Don.

    First year for RVing for me. Checked out your compressed air method for winterizing plumbing. You mentioned the antifreeze line for the water pump, which mine is missing. How do I get the water out of my water pump?

    • @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
      @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you empty the tank and just let it run for 15-30 seconds dry you will be fine. Your pump can run dry for much longer than that without issue. I left mine on for 2 days accidentally with no water in the tank a few years ago.

  • @badbadley

    I paid close attention and made good notes, then tried to blow out my RVs lines. Nothing happened. No water came out anywhere. I'm wondering if my 1 gallon compressor is not powerful enough or doesn't put out enough SCFM. I shut off all the faucets, and set the compressor to between 30 and 40 psi. Then I opened the hose's shutoff valve slowly and watched the pressure reading drop to zero on both my compressor outlet and the digital readout on the pressure regulator I put in the line. What size compressor do I need? This is the first time I've winterized my Class A, since until now my annual winterizing method was simply to drive it to Tucson for the winter. I'm a subscriber to your channel. Thanks.

    • @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
      @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS  ปีที่แล้ว

      even a small compressor will at least push air through the line. sounds like something is blocked, or there is a check valve not opening due to the small amount of air youre pushing through. try again, if that doesnt work, immediately hook up a water hose and let me know if water is going through the lines.

  • @DaveMelvinKW
    @DaveMelvinKW 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    May be a dumb question and maybe I missed something, but why do you connect to shore power first? Seems like everything will operate on 12v. I don't remember seeing where it might have come into play other than plugging in your compressor.

    • @RVTIPSANDTRAVELS

      Anytime I can plug in I will. It keeps the drain off the battery when you open slides, turn on water pump, lights, furnace if it gets cold when winterizing, etc. but not a dumb question at all. Your battery will run the slides and pump.
