Thanks for posting this video - you just saved me a trip to BMW and possibly $1k. I have a 2018 X1 - no warranty - and my warning light came on while driving home. First thing I did was google which led me to your video. You mentioned moisture and I remembered a bottle of water had leaked in the seat. Turns out the seat was soaked - so I followed your suggestions, and the next day everything was pretty much dried out . It's been a couple of weeks and the warning light has not come back on. Lesson learned for me and. a huge thanks to you!
I got the Passenger Restraint System warning every time I started the car for a couple years - say ok/confirm and it would go away - 2014 X3 - I brought it in for an unrelated BMW recall and they had to update the software. The software update fixed the issue and the warning never happens. I'd bet this is a software issue for many people. BMW should fix for free. I'm sure they won't.

I was struggling to move the car seat with my hand between the carpet and the rail trying to push the two lugs up with my fingers so I could get to the bolts to take the seat out yesterday ( the bracket and oversize paper clip were on the floor and I had no idea how it all went together). As usual, when having to work outside, it was pouring down all day! Both me and the seat were soaked! When I finally got it all back together I had that warning on the dash. I took the seat out again (far easier this time!) and couldn’t find anything wrong with it. Seeing your video has put my mind at ease. I’m now, fairly certain it’s the dampness and letting it dry out will solve the problem. Thanks again.
Had this happen today with my 2017 BMW 320i after sitting in the seat with wet bathing suit after being on the beach. Will try air’ing it out and see what happens. Thanks for this video!
The problem I have with this video is the error message said "Drivers side restraint system malfunction" and all you talked about is passengers side??? WTH
The sensor is active on the front module of the overall restraint system. When one thing fails, it dings the sensor. The error came from the main harness that lives under the passenger seat. Hope this helps
I was panicking until I listen to your video, lately when it rains the passenger side is full of water it explains the malfunction because of the moisture thank you for the enlightening.

Hi In my BMW i3, the situation is reversed - from time to time a warning appears that the passenger airbag is not connected, although the passenger is sitting next to me. The same icon is lit as in your story at 0:39. After a while, the error disappears by itself. Sometimes this error may not appear for quite a long time, so it makes no sense to put the car in for repair, but it’s also somehow stressful to drive!
Thank you for creating this video! It has been getting so annoying lately with that notification constantly showing up in my BMW x3 28i yr 2012. Now that I hear you speak about moisture, I realize that the passenger door has always held water somehow in the lower inside of the door. Once someone opens the door, the water just falls out. My interior doesn't get wet or anything but water just seems to get trapped in the bottom of the passenger door and that could more than likely be causing trapped in moisture on that side of my vehicle/under the seat and causing that notification to come on. I also notice that whenever a passenger gets out the passenger side seat, that notification ALWAYS appear again. Some days I can go the whole day and it doesn't come on. Other days, it keeps notifying me like crazy!! Been trying to avoid the dealer. However, I don't want know harm or danger to happen to anyone riding in my vehicle. I'm going to try the things you said such as let my vehicle air out and maybe find a small fan to blow under the seat and see if that works. If not, I'll go on to the dealer. I did a dumb thing where I accidentally left my window open in a storm of my interior got pretty wet. I turned on my seat warmers and it would do a weird thing where the light would go away and come back it’s weird

The same light came up on my f32 I left the window cracked open on a rainy day the water got inside. I left my windows for a few days and the light went away
I took the seat out on my 2013 f30 and drove it for a bit without the seat. after putting it back I get the passenger restraint system message everytime , I don't get why since I plugged in the harness right and everything is working
BMW probably serviced my car six times to finally figure out what the issue was. It’s still unclear what was the culprit, but it’s something to definitely check out. If it’s an actual alert that your restraint system is malfunctioning, then your airbags will not deploy.
My 2015 i3 has been in the shop for 3 weeks. They’ve replaced 4 sensors with no luck and software engineers IN NEW JERSEY plugged in remotely and keep insisting it’s a wiring issue. Light would ONLY come on when my wife was in the car and it’s not water damage because I placed seat covers over the seats. Used to only happen in summer from body sweat (hence the covers.) Edit: apparently I had the worst luck with seat sensors. As it was the 6th one they plugged in that magically worked.
I hope by now your car is fine. Here is a tip, if the car has been in the shop for more than a month, you can ask for a refund or payment back for a loss of not having your car with you, but rather at the dealership. Again, it’s not certain, but worth a try to help.
@@RADBAVARIAN they had provided me with an alternate vehicle free of charge. (2024 i4.) But that is helpful for next time. I’ll update my comments but basically turned out to be 5 bad seat sensors in a row and magic number 6 finally was a good one.

BMW had to replace the entire harness to ensure it's not a problem. I took it in twice for this to be fine now
That happens when you spill liquid on the seats and it falls on the cables or the passenger air bag sensors.

This now a recall item for my E90 M3.
No way!
I do have extended cover,but they told me if it's water damage it won't be cover and I will have to pay thousands to replace that sensor
Go to a different dealership. Some are jerks and will turn away customers. They should inspect for water damage if that's the case
