I definitely recommend not setting up external drive as internal storage. If you do, you’ll have to reformat it if you connect it to a pc

To make moving files easier, you can create a new network location from the Windows Explorer. Located to the nvidia shields folder on that ip

Could you make a video about remote access please? I've got Nvidia Shield 2019 and 2TB external SSD. Nvidia Shield is connected by Ethernet cable. I did port forwarding on my router but remote access never works. An Plex pass user. I feel Plex is irresponsible that they do not have customer service and leave everything to Forum.

Still holds up to this day, thanks man. Here are some issues I came across and how I fixed them:
Plex Media Failed to Setup: I went on the web page and removed the server, when setting up the server on the Plex/Shield again I UNTICKED the box that asked if it wanted to create library folders for me.
app plex tv is unable to connect to SHIELD: I stopped using the html web page and downloaded the Plex app for Windows (or Mac) - on initial launch/sign in it will give you a list of the folders on the Shield, remove what you wish but make sure to follow the steps in this video to add the folder with your media.
    Lastly, enjoy your movies!

  • @hwetherell6250
    @hwetherell6250 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Thanks. This was simple and to the point, and most importantly, it saved me the time to get the folder name, etc... on my own. I especially appreciated your important reminder that the Nvidia Shield pro will find it difficult to run the PMS and play games at the same time.
The mounting of the external HD was relatively intuitive, but I do wish you could have shown how to mount external storage on the network.
Some comments have mentioned a NAS, which may not be so difficult, if you know how to set the IP address of the NAS to static on a router. For me, I'm considering adding storage directly to my router, because it seems convenient; but, at the same time, it might more challenging. (It might also be the wrong decision for my LAN.)
    Anyway, thanks again.

I set up Plex on my Nvidia Shield, and it is working great. I had the meta data put on the HD with the videos. If I take the NS to our cabin in New Mexico, where we don't have internet, will it still show the movies and the data for the movies there? It didn't seem to work. Is there some setting that needs to be changed for it to work w/o internet?
    Thanks

Ryan Porter ran into this same issue tonight on my shield... I deleted the app and the server. I then downloaded and installed the media server from the play store. Then downloaded and installed the plex app. On first opening the plex app I skipped the login and I enabled use the plex media server. It will then prompt you to login and link your account but it works again. Very odd though

Thanks for this Plex Nvidia Shield Pro video. It was highly informative.
I'm contemplating getting a Shield Pro and using Plex for my extensive MKV HEVC (4K) and AVC (FHD) DTS 5.1 and HD MA 7.1 movie collection on USB drives, connected to a TV via a Pioneer receiver. However, I've been really confused by commentary that suggests that Plex doesn't support mkv or DTS (only mp4 and ac3, aac, and mp3). I'd hate to get the Shield Pro and Plex and find my usb drive collection of movies either incompatible or compromised by transcoding.
I noticed in your video that when you loaded up your initial couple of Star Wars video files into the Plex Library folder, they were both MKV containers with DTS HD MA 6.1 audio streams. Can you set me straight on that. Would those video files play through Plex in that MKV format and with the full DTS audio?

Was trying to move some music media over to the usb stick that plex is using but have not figured it out yet on Linux Mint. In the meantime...I have a powered usb hub that the plex stick is on and I just copy what I want onto another drive...plug it in and then copy the media over to the plex stick for now. 12:44 I removed mine without shutting down and it does corrupt the data and I had to start it over. I also noticed that when running a vpn the server shuts down. So I've learned that if I'm going to take out the drive...shut down my vpn, THEN shut down the server, then remove the drive.

Haven't seen any mention of the potential risks of enabling SMB1 in Windows. For security reasons, Microsoft recommends that you disable SMB1 immediately. Ransomware targets the vulnerabilities of the SMB service of the Windows operating system to propagate. To defend yourself against WannaCrypt ransomware it is imperative that you disable SMB1 as well as install the patches released by Microsoft.
When you use SMB1, you lose key protections offered by later SMB protocol versions:
Pre-authentication Integrity (SMB 3.1.1+). Protects against security downgrade attacks.
Secure Dialect Negotiation (SMB 3.0, 3.02). Protects against security downgrade attacks.
Encryption (SMB 3.0+). Prevents inspection of data on the wire, MiTM attacks. In SMB 3.1.1 encryption performance is even better than signing!
Insecure guest auth blocking (SMB 3.0+ on Windows 10+) . Protects against MiTM attacks.
Better message signing (SMB 2.02+). HMAC SHA-256 replaces MD5 as the hashing algorithm in SMB 2.02, SMB 2.1 and AES-CMAC replaces that in SMB 3.0+. Signing performance increases in SMB2 and 3. For more see www.tenforums.com/tutorials/107605-enable-disable-smb1-file-sharing-protocol-windows.html

AWESOME tutorial Lon. LOved it. very informative. I mght think about adding a Shield Pro to my list of things to get for my Home Theater. Right now just using my MYCloud EX2 Ultra for music (FLAC) streamig but I dont really do the video thing as I have my blurays when I need to play them so not a big deal. my MyCloud isnt powerful enough for movie hardware transcoding but thats cool if the Shield is and I can also use it as a game machine to play those old school retro games. I already have a PS4 and a Roku Ultra for movie streaming services but the Shield is nice as well. WIll have to save up. Keep up all the great amazing tutorials you do on your channel. One of the best of all time for sure!

Now I know why I am breaking the server when I unplug it when I had the meta data on it. Guess I will put it on another drive bc the Shield was filling up when I moved it back. Until I get a NAS this is a work around at least. Thank you sooo much.

Can we get a step by step setup on getting Live TV and DVR running with recorded shows saved to a folder in a NAS Attached device and to your local iMac or MacBook drive as an alternative. I cannot find a way to save recordings to a folder of my choice other than to save it to the default and then move it. I Know you have done one before, but the videos youy have done on this date back and the screens do not seem to match...most likely me, but I'd really like ot get this to work with my HomeRun.

My nVidia Shield TV Pro 2019 connects directly to the TV and fed via the Internet and HDHomeRun Flex 4K ATSC 3.0. I have an old Dell XPS 8700 with 32GB and a high-end nVidia video running Windows 11 with a 1TB SSD that transcodes very well, and works across the Internet via VPN as well. I was thinking about moving the Plex server to the nVidia Shield to eliminate any dependency on the PC being up. I'll think a while longer. I may leave the Shield as a client, and set up Plex as a service on the PC so when it gets rebooted like after an update, it auto-loads Plex for when I'm living abroad. Thanks!

Updated answer: DON'T SET UP A PLEX SERVER ON NVIDIA SHIELD TV.
NVidia has pushed out an update to all Shield TVs that basically destroys Plex functionality. They're still scratching their heads. (Breaks functionality to many other apps and games also.)
Plex is also scratching their heads.
Basically: Go with a Synology NAS instead. I wasted about $200 on the Shield TV a couple months ago and I WISH I'd invested that into a Synology instead.

mmmm. What's wrong with my 26TB of possible movie storage on my Network ? Why do I want another point of failure, a separate SSD or HD, plugged into the Plex TV Sheild Pro. I don't. I've largely given up on Plex (PMS) on a reasonably powerful PC because of nightmarish Transcoding issues. I'm putting the PMS on the Nvidia box as a last-ditch attempt to avoid transcoding issues via the PC. Or I'll go back to 2014 and pretend that media servers do not exist. PMS worked so well in its early days. As the Plex Empire sought to run on every flavour of SW & HW in the known world... its reliability has rendered it mostly unusable.

How was I unsubscribed.... What is going on Yt? Well of course i'm back, re-subbed ... Lon keep posting the great videos! Even though this is old, your video helped me w the plex server years later after i've owned my pro since 2019, Thanks again.

I have a Nvidia Shield with External 1Tb SSD Drive, SQY Q Router with UPNP Enabled, Yamaha CRX N470D Music Center. I have succesfully accessed Plex Media Server running on my Shield for over two years had initial problems until found needed to enable DLNA on Plex Server. It has now stopped working and the Yamaha can only see my networked PC. The Plex Media Server is running on Shield as can attach from PC or my phone. I have checked with Sky and they have not updated my router any ideas?

Hello. Great video, sure helped a lot.
I have an additional question though. Will nvidia shield tv pro + plex media server will recognize simultaneously everything connected from an usb hub (5 external hard drives + 1 dongle for keyboard+mouse) sonce it's only connected through one of the two USB drives of the shield?
Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hi,
I watched one of your tube clips on using an external drive and Nvidia together on the network.
I have a 2021 Nvidia shield and windows 10 as well as an 2T external drive.
We are moving, I will set up Ethernet connections to 4 TV's.
Can I set these up with multiple Nvidia's as nd all access the same drive, or would you suggest any alternatives.
    Thanks,
    Fred Goldman.

This was a great video. Question for you. I plugged in my external drive to the shield so it could make that Nvidea folder, but once I plug it back into my Mac, I go to transfer some stuff into that folder, and I get an error message saying it won't work. Error message -50. Any idea how to fix it?

thx very much for setting up Plex. I could replicate 99% of what you showed me but that last 1 % erghh. In short Nvidia shield TV pro + ext usb ssd ( not as an extension of internal storage) and plex installed. In W10 on Pc in network I can see the SHIELD and the.USB ssd Both drives have the important NVIDIA_SHIELD folder. I can drag and drop files from PC to SHIELD but windows cannot access the ext drive, whatever I tried in 6 hrs following you tube and forums advice.

This has been driving me insane - do I have to run a copy of the media server on a PC as well? I can't see any of my media on the Shield, it tells me I need to add my media by downloading the server onto the device that has my media on it -which is an external hard drive attached to Shield. When I go to the Plex website and log in, I see an option on the left column for "YOUR MEDIA", but when I click on it, I'm told to "GET PLEX MEDIA SERVER". The original idea here was to move the server off my PC and onto the Shield, but this has been a huge PITA.

The Nvidia Shield doesn't do MKV containers, does it? I have three HD's in a DAS and all my movie files are MKV. Now what?
The shield doesn't seem to have a problem with my FLAC files, though. Thanks Matt.
EDIT: Strike what I said about FLAC files. I get the cover art but the files won't play! Ahhhh!

Sounds like the Nvidia Shield Pro is the right solution for me. Do you have any experience moving a server to this device, in particular one configured on a thumb drive as I have mine?
I've been a Plex user for about a year now, running on a hoopty Windows 10 laptop, my libraries on a 4TB WD Passport, server on a 64GB thumb drive, streaming across the wireless network to a couple TVs and handheld devices. It's worked remarkable well considering. Most of the content on the thumb drive are the BIF files (about 24GB) that contain all the thumbnails (I like that stuff). I periodically robocopy to another WD Passport as my backup. Not fancy but it works. I should mention I live in Việt Nam so things like running cable, availability of hardware and so on are more difficult. Your video answered most of my questions, but I'm wondering if it will recognize those GUID.bundle folders (I'm assuming they're GUIDs) and the BIF files they contain. I am really hoping to avoid having them recreate them. It hammers the shit out of the drive for about 48 hours. I'm anticipating I will need to let Shield reformat the thumb drive after which I'll reintegrate the contents back into whatever structure it creates for the Plex Server. I have no intention of reformatting the Passport.
Anything you could suggest or additional information you could point me to would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Wierd.. I have my Nvidia Shield Tv Pro hooked up correctly, but transferring files from PC to Shield over network has been so slow (500KB - 1 MB/s). I saw in this vid that it is going very fast for Lon.. any tips? Everything is connected via Ethernet to my Gigabit connection.

Great video, very easy to follow! At first I thought it had put an end to the hours of frustration I was having trying to set it up. But when I unplugged the external drive and connected it to my computer to move the movies folder there is no NVIDIA Shield folder. Not sure where to put the movies folder now. Any suggestions? Thanks

First time I followed this guide it all worked fine but now I was gonna do it again I never get NVIDIA_SHIELD folder on my SSD drive unless I chose to point the plex storage to the SSD while it's connected.. And when I then unplug the SSD from the shield and into the computer and try to move a movies folder into the NVIDIA_SHIELD folder I either get a direct error message in windows or the folder dissappears when I plug the SSD back into the shield. Does somebody know what is wrong? I've used the SSD before for this and it worked.
