Modern PLAN Surface Combatant Evolution

- This video tracks the evolution of the modern People's Liberation Army Navy, or PLAN, or simply the Communist Chinese Navy, surface combatants.
We start with the Type 052 destroyer which I do not show here which was a relatively weak destroyer by the late 1990s standards. It had very weak anti-air defenses consisting of two Crotale/HHQ-7 short-range SAM missile launchers fore and aft which would not have been able to shoot down any major attack consisting of any large numbers of modern anti-shipping missiles. In 2011, both were upgraded with longer range missiles, but were still rated weak against modern equipment.
So we move to the first truly capable ship the PLAN acquired when they bought first two and then two more Russian Sovremenny destroyers, which were the strongest destroyers the Soviets produced in the cold war and which they still have to this day. The last two had significantly improved electronics. They had 48 medium range missiles (about 20 miles) and eight strong, supersonic anti-shipping missiles, plus strong anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
It was wondered, as the Chinese began to develop their own stronger ships whether the Chinese would keep the Sovremenny vessels. The Chinese answered when they took the first one and upgraded it. Exchanging all Russian weapons and sensors for Chinese weapons and sensors, including replacing the single arm launchers for the anti-air missiles with 32 VLS missile launchers and their own longer range anti-air missiles. It is anticipated that they will do all four and keep them effective into the 2030s, and perhaps until 2040.
The Chinese then developed two of their own ships, the Type 052B, which mimicked the Sovremenny. Same single arm launchers, same anti-air missiles, same sensors, etc. But they carried 16 Chinese anti-surface missiles and it seems these two ships will be upgraded too with the VLS launchers and Chinese sensors. These were built in the 2004-2006 time frame at the same time the Chinese were building two other types of ships.
At that time is seemed the Chinese were making some decisions on which direction they wanted to go. Did they want to mimic the Russians? Did they want to mimic the United States?, or did they want to go on their own.
One of the ships was the Type 051C. These vessels carried 36 VLS cells similar to Russian VLS cells on some of their other ships. They used diesel engines.
They also had a new Gas generator engine they wanted to keep but were unsure how well it would work. Those ships were the Type 052C and carried 48 of the circular VLS. And they were building (as already stated) the two Type 051B DDGs which were similar to the Sovremenny vessels. The Type 051C seemed like a stop gap against the Type 052C.
Well, the Type 052C won. They built two and they had APARs similar to the US Burke designs with the weapons systems placed similarly. At first they built two and ended up building six of the Type 052Cs.
Then, in 2008-2010 they worked on and completed an upgrade to the Type 052C, called the Type 052D and put them into production.
These carried 64 missile cells, but they were now a newer Chinese VLS very similar in appearance to the US MK-41 system, and they could launch multiple missile types...land attack, medium to long range anti-air, and subrock ASW missiles.
The Chinese really liked these ships which outside of 34 less missiles and only a single helicopter were more in appearance to the US Burke Flight IIA ships. They also had larger APAR radars and were a much improved vessel. The Chinese built 12 of these between 2012 and 2019 and are still building. Six more now (which will make 18) and they will build as many as 30 of these 7.500 ton vessels
In 2016 they began building a newer, larger destroyer, which by American standards would be termed a cruiser.
These are the Type 055, 13,000 ton large destroyers, The have even larger APARs (as larger and even larger than the coming Flight III Burkes). The have 112 VLS cells, and also carry 24 of their close in missiles in the RAM like launcher the Chinese developed. They built four of these at once and launched in 2018 and 2019. It is expected that they will build 20-24 of these vessels.
They also have 30 VERY good Type 054A Frigates to add to the mix...over 100 surface combatants...all new and modern.

Hello, I am a military enthusiast from China. After watching the video you made, I would like to communicate with you very much, but my English is not good. I hope you will forgive me. I'm glad to see your comments and opinions on Chinese warships, and I can see that you are a very rational and cultured patriot, which is very worthy of respect. Although our motherland is different, but the concept of patriotism is the same. Rationality and objectivity are indispensable qualities. We hope that more and more people like us in the United States and China will be able to do so. May there be no war between China and the United States.
Amen to everything you said, and thank you for contacting me. I wish God's blessing on you and your family...and your people. I am a super moderator on the Sino Defence Forum and have discussions with many CHinese there. In my engineering career, I am retired now, I worked with numerous people in Hong Kong and Taiwan and always had great respect for them and they wee always very kind to me. I found the same from mainlanders on the SD Forum. I pray too that we never have a war. I think that as the Chinese people continue to have their economy and their life style growth through enterprise and markets with the rest of the world, it will help us all to realize that we have much more that joins us together (loving our wife and children, loving our grandchildren, wanting to help others around us, wanting our people to be proud of their country and honorable and moral people. All of these things make us much more alike than they separate us. Anyhow, thanks for looking at my channel. The Chinese people have much to be proud of...the reclamation efforts that were made in creating the islands in the South China Sea from the reefs that were there were simply amazing. I worked on many reclamation projects and know what it takes to do that type of thing and China did an excellent job there. Anyhow, once again, God;s best to you and your family, friends, and loved ones.
I neglected to speak to the Type 054A frigates the Chinese have been building for several years. Effective frigates of about 4,000+ tons, 32 VLS missile launchers, 8 anti-surface missiles in quad launchers,a main gun, two 25mm secondary guns, two 6 cell torpedo tubes, and a help, pad and hanger for ASW, SAR, or recon. With those 30 already all completed, they will have a total of 100 modern surface combatants very soon.
Where did you buy those models? Is it a finished product and expensive?
This is so knowledgeable, thank you.
two 30mm secondary guns. 7×30or11×30
a little bit insight, 055 isn't the final project, PLAN's next generation destroyer plan has started already. New technologies are being tested under experiments. with said that includes lazer weapon, rail guns, nuclear engines, stronger and longer range radars, more capable VLS etc.
Jeff Head and the 056 corvette
I need to correct an error. The 2nd ship I show is he Type 052B (DDG-168 and DDG-169) and the third is the Type 051C (DDG-115 and DDG-116). My bad and hope everyone sees this and I apologize for the mistake because I really do know better.
Yeah, the real 051B was 167 "Shenzhen". It was China's first big destroyer over 6000 tonnes and driven by steam turbine engines(CODOS). 051B has also been remodelized to be a bigger 054A-liked-ship with 32 VLS.
Hi may I ask where you got your models from? I would like to purchase a few of my own. Thank you in advance!
Very great job👍, you are the first person I've ever met to know about PLAN so well in America, respect from a Chinese military fan.
Thank you. I have been watching the steady and impressive build up nd modernization of the PLAN for the last 15 years. I had a site I kept track of things here: www.jeffhead.com/redseadragon/index.htm. Then, have been a Super Moderator at Sino Defense Forum for the last 8-9 years too. I worked as an Engineer in America for many years on numerous US military projects and am a member of the US Naval Institute. I have told all the people there how impressive the PLAN progress is, and that it should not be underestimated. You have some ground to make up still with nuclear submarines...but are rapidly clsing the gap in all other areas.
Really good introduction and excellent models as well. These videos are really famous on Chinese websites and it should have got more views on youtube.
Pass it on to you CHinese friends and have them do the same...the more who see it, perhaps it will spread over there. I have a LOT of similar videos that should interest Chinese viewers,
For those asking, these are all 1/350 scale models, which is what I mostly build for ships...thugh I built a whole two carrier strike group of the new Izumo class JMSDF class Japanese carriers with F-35Bs because no one makes a 1/350 Izumo yet. When they do, I will buy twp and do it in 1/350 scale. Almost all of my aircraft models are 1/72 scale.
Keep it up Jeff, you are the person that got me into building in the 1/350 scale. Love your videos and am always excited to see a new one!
Your videos are informative and well balanced. Thank you.
Video has done a good job and learned a lot about the development of Chinese naval vessels.
It's interesting to see the gradual improvement in each DDG class, from the updated Luda III, the Luhu and the Luhai of the 1990's.
The imported Sovremmeny vessels, then the 3 designs of the early 2000's, of which the Type 052C was chosen as the main DDG class.
The previous DDG destroyers were built in very small numbers, until the 052C was built and the improved Type 052D and 052DE (x 6/26+). So from being built in pairs etc the chosen design is being built in very large numbers.
As a chinese, I want to say the 26th 052dl destroyer segmentation already close right now. and also, chinese navy seems dont really like type055, because it is hard to compared with LSC. their plan is to reaserch new generation ship which called(全能舰)said by general MaWeiming. also, they are working on develope type055a with full electric propulsion and rail gun right now
I still believe we will see 20-24 Type 055. They are a very capable design, and with 112 VLS and the 24 HQ-10 aft, they have a very strong missile capability and with two of the larger helos able to land and operate, their ASW capability has increased a lot.
I also hope so, however, right now, there are only totally 8 type 055. And I didnt saw anymore after the 8th 055 subsection publiced for almost 1 year
100 modern medium-large combatants will be a formidable force, especially if they stay close and operate under aircover from the mainland.
In hindsight the the lCS ships and the Zumvalt seems abit missplaced to say the least, you wont scare away a fleet like this with hellfire missiles...
That money could have been better spent on developing a Ticonderoga replacement.
Lets hope the FFG(X) turns into something more potent to bolster the fleet.
Well, in their defense, first with they upgrade in weapons and sensors, and then with the FF designation and further upgrades they now have 8 Norwegian Naval Strike Missiles with a range of 150 miles and either shipping or land target targeting...which the US helped them develop because they also now fit into the F-35B stealth bays, and they have added much better sensors to help guide them and communications to be able to get targeting from either P-8As, heloc, MQ-4C Tritons or other sources (of course including their own helos) and they have twp MK 38 Mod 2 25mm auto cannons, VKLS for 24 Hellfire missiles, ASW targeting, and will also have at least 32 MK-41 missile tubes which will help with air defense, ASM capabilities (it will allow for the LRASM, which has a 500+ mile range) and their speed and stealth characteristics are pretty decent...so the LCS vessels are finally turning into grigates. The Zumwalt is ready to be a powerful DDG if they will go ahead and simply test the magnetic rail gun at sea which Obama simply canceled, and get that aboard so the guns have something to shoot. They already have 80 operational Mk-55 VLLS cells, and can carry 2 or 3 Sea Hawk helos. In addition to the two 155mm guns, which they need the rail gun so they can fire them, they have two 30mm autocannons. And their stealth makes them appear about the size of a speed boat. So there is also great hope there. Obama was dismal disaster for the US Navy.

DDG - 055 (x 8)?
DDG - 052D (x 24)?
DDG - 052C (x 6)
DDG - 051C (x 2)
DDG - 052B (x 2)
DDG - Luhai (x 1)
DDG - Sovremneny (x 4)
DDG - Luhu (x 2)
FFG - Jiangwei II (x 10)
FFG - 054 (x 2)
FFG - 054A (x 30)?
FSG - 055 (x 56)?
The above are all either in service or are being built.
The CCG coast guard and the MSA maritime safety administration both have medium and large sized OPV and Patrol Cutters (including up to 575 feet long CCG cutters, Type 818 based on the Type 054 FFG and Type 718 CCG based on the Type 056 FSG, etc).
So the total number is considerably more than 100 large and medium sized estcourts.
An excellent review of the current PLAN destroyers Jeff.
Always love your input about the PLAN in Sinodefenceforum.com.
Incase you're wondering. I am J20 RTS in that forum.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the kind words.
Thank you for covering this 👍🏻
New news, 2 of type 055 build in Dalian installate their AESA radar already, they will maiden sea trial soon. Also, 9th type 055 segmentation appear in Dalian too
I actually found your video on Bilibili.com(a popular chinese video website), someone re-posted your video their ( of course acknowledged original author, and posted your youtube link). Your video is more welcomed there, the re-posted video got more views than this one.
Hope you can also open an account there and update your video there. Don't worry about the subtitle, there are lot of military fans there, they can help with the translation.
Wallace Yu, thank you very much for those kind words. I would love to set up a channel over there and be able to transfer the videos there too. It would be nice if many of the people there could subscribe as well to my channel here on youtube. If you get the chance, encourage them to do so...and watch all of thee many videos I have for both China, the US, Russia, the Royal Navy, the Japanese, and many others...both 1/350 scale vessels, and 1/72 aircraft. I also built and posted a video of an entire JMSDF two carrier strike group. The Japanese should not be underestimated either. They have 30 new and strong destroyers, and four carriers which they call DDH. They also have many FFGs, and about 30 very modern AIP SSKs. The first two carriers really are replacing their old DDH, but the second two are really carriers and I predicted four years ago that the Japanese would ultimately buy F-35Bs and put them on those two carriers of the Izumo class (The Izumo DDH-184 and the Kaga DDH-184). No one believed me. Now they have done it, and each will carry 24+ F-35Bs. With the 5th generation, stealth, supersonic, and electronic fusion, they will be very tough opponents for the J-15s. China will need to either get the J-31 or some other carrier stealth aircraft to counter it. The Koreans are doing the same with their two Dokdo class carriers, and the Australians are considering the same for their two Canberra vessels. The US have already tested over 20 F-35Bs on their two America Class LHAs and several of the eight LHD Wasp class. So the US can go from ten carriers which are nuclear and each capable of carrying 90 aircraft, and add to that 4-6 additional carriers at anytime they want. Add the six small carriers from these allies and you see that the US alliance now will be able to field up to 22 carrier, all flying 5th generation stealth strike aircraft. Anyhow, take a look at the following video. It is the one about the Japanese carrier groups but in 1/700 scale because nobody makes those larger carriers in 1/350 scale. Just as I say to my own countrymen not to underestimate the PLAN, I would say to my Chinese friends not to underestimate the Japanese. Anyhow heres that video: th-cam.com/video/R5PiV8WX1s0/w-d-xo.html
Good analysis Jeff
Nice collections !
Great video Jeff. Love your work. One more advice---can you perhaps upgrade your camera? Love to see the details of your work.
Thanks Jeff.
wow... amazing. The Sovremenny class is the latest updated version
Very nice collection! 4:11 That is a 051C (instead of a 052B), 4:22 is a 052B (instead of a 051B that was not in the collection)
Great work!
Thank you!
Also, im really sorry to hear LSC delate again, I dont want to see the tragedy on the CGX will happen on LSC again. I belive both quannengjian and LSC will be two different explorer on new generation of surface ships. LSC is working on bigger radar(7meter) and more integrated and new vls(1meter) and high energy weapon. quannengjian as general MaWeiming said will be electromagnetic ejection assisted missiles launch, near anti rail gun, and expanding the range of strike and detection with unmanned fixed wing aircraft such as caihong7 or anjian and larger caliber guide rail guns, to replacing aircraft carries on some way(huge reconnaissance scope and huge ammunition delivery)
The LCS has finally, through Fast Frigate Upgrade and the upgrade to weapons, sensors, and other issues have finally been made into decent frigates...and that will be for 35 of the ships, with them able to upgrade, and 20 more of the FF. So that's 55 vessels there. Very fast, carrying eight Worwegian Strike MIssiles, 24 Hellfire for swarming small craft, two helos, torpedos, Sea-RAM, two 30mm auto cannons, and the 57mm gun. In addition, the US will decide on the winner of the FFG(X) program this year and will order 20-28 of them and the will be AEGI capable frigates, probably similar to the Australian Hobart class. These will carry a 48 cell VLS, a 5" gun, two helos, 35mm autco cannons, AEGIS Phased array, and many other sensors and weapons and ECM. The will be able to be Cooperative Engagement with the larger AWEGIS vessels too. So, by 2030 the US will have added close to 70 frigates that will be very capable...and it about time. The Obama administration simply did not know what they were doing, but before that, Bush got her program off on the wrong foot.
Good work man. I realize u didn't mention type052E which is last upgrade of 052. Basically just longer chopper deck, I heard pilots complaint about deck too small, too dangerous to land. Then they try their best to hide most of the antennas into a structure just like the type055. Also I read a spec that the main gun on 052d and 055 is completely different animal although they r same size. Something about they had to sacrifice some features on the main gun on 052d due to the smaller size of ship. But on 055 they can fully utility all the features
Hello I'm watching you from Turkey and explore your new chanel you are a good channel :)
Thank you very much.
Jeff where do you find these awesome ships & planes? I'm a retired Marine that would like to build some of these. My brother retired from the Navy and his son is still in. I would like to build all the ships that we served on and the aircraft that myself and my nephew worked on. Any and all information that you could share with me. Would be much appreciated sir. Thank you & Semper Fi
The models of these warships are very good。
Thnk you for those kind words...I hope you will subscribe and invite others to do so as well.
God bless you Jeff
We made the 1:200 scale model of CV16 LiaoNing and CV 17 ShanDong , we can give you one as gift .
love your video
I don't think the distinction "frigate, destroyer, cruiser" has any real meaning now. Navies across the globe call their surface combatants whatever the heck they want. Russia calls the Lyder class "destroyers" although they're clearly cruiser size. The Chinese call the type 55 ships "destroyers" even if they're clearly cruiser size. The Japanese call their Kongo class "destroyers" although they're clearly cruiser sized etc...
No Navy in the world is gonna make "cruisers" now. The US, China, Russia all have plans for large future surface combatants but they all refer to them as "destroyers". Soon the word "cruiser" will be extinct from navies just like the word "battleship" went extinct.
The size of "destroyers" have inflated to a point that now they're the size of Dreadnought Battleships lol.
Gotta agree the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers is planned to be replaced by Flight III Arleigh Burke class destroyers. But Russia still has the Kirov class battlecruisers. Hope the Ticonderoga-class CGNs will last for a long time. They were a beautiful ship in my opinion.
It is sorta like smartphones isnt it. Note plus plus plus
Japanese Aircraft carrier "Izumo" , 30000t , They call it helicopter Frigate lol
Jeff... From what I have read, the Arleigh Burke class was first commissioned in 1991 and the Triconderoga class in 1983? It was a game changer at the time but aren't they a bit old to be vastly more superior than the Chinese warships which are build in the 2000?
and 34 typ054 , 50 typ056
Love your collection. Could you please share with us some legit sources to buy those models?
Your reply would be appricated.
Sir,your videos are so informative and well balanced. I do hope people understand that all China is doing is modernising its armed forces in proportion to its economy and the need to protect its national interests and trading routes. They leant a painful lesson in the 1800's.
thank you!
Thanks for the kind words.
How did you get these models? Interesting…
There are many places online places to buy them rom China to Japan to the UK to the US. Also you can find most of them on eBay as well.
MOst of the are either Trumpeter or Bronco, though there are some others.
These models are awesome, where did you get them from?
Most of the are from either Trumpeter or Bronco MOdels in this video.
Instant subscribe,
The main role for these ships is carrier convoy and land attack from high seas.
There won't be a PLAN vs JMSDF scenario, coz JASDF is way too weak compared to PLAAF in terms of quantity and capability.
Without a all-in coverage from the USN and USAF, JMSDF + JASDF would be wiped out pretty quickly by PLAAF + PLARF alone.
According to Japanese officials, they did a simulation against PLAN in a full scale battle. The result was they had a 0% chance of winning if the Chinese anti ship ballistic missiles get involved as well.
@@zszs100 I'm not sure about the existence of this simulation, but the conclusion is pretty obvious. JMSDF and JASDF are not capable of operating alone, as it lacks offensive methods and strategic countermeasures.
I would not count on this scenario being so sure. The JMSDF is VERY squared away, and their ships are very capable. The Takanami, Akisaki, the new Ashi, and their eight AEGIS vessels, should not be taken so lightly, neither should their Soryu and the next earlier sub class. I believe both of those classes are better than the PLAN YUan class...and the Japanese have a lot of them. And now that the Izumo class is going to be carrying F-35Bs, they will have two carrier groups, each capable of carrying 24 or more F-35Bs. This has given the PLAN headaches and is a nightmare scenario for them because the South Koreans are doing the same with the Dokdos, the Australians are considering the same with the Canberras, and ou can bet the INdians may want the same...then add several more such "escrot carriers" with the Wasp and America class whenever the US wants them...and what was five or six US carriers in the Pacific has now turned into a total of 20 or so should the balloons go up. Finally, the Chinese ballistic missile capability is and always has been a Sun Tsu counter. They have never tested the supposed capability all at once. The only live fire test we still know of shows two blasts on stationary carrier outlined in the desert. They have never called for the type of exclusion and testing zne you would have to have to test it in the open seas. Not once. I suspect they have some missiles deployed, and they may even have some hope of a capability of sorts...but the abilities they need to have to find, target, fire upon, and then reacquire and maneuver their warhead once coming back into the atmosphere, and do all of that in a ECM environment, also with physical anti-missile fire is not the type of thing you could ever get away with without many, many tests. And as I say...there has never been an end to end test of the thing over the water in the Western Pacific.
@@JeffHead-IdahoUSA Japan is just trying to make reasons to reduce their military restrictions.
@@JeffHead-IdahoUSA I agree that JMSDF is very capable. It would be a very tough scenario for PLAN if it encounter with JMSDF.
What I'm saying is, compared to PLAAF, JASDF is way too weak. China has nearly 1500 4th gen fighters (J10A/B/C, all versions of Flanker) in its inventory, while JASDF only has 200+, with majority of them being F15J, a batch of F15 C/D that was intentionally downgraded by the US, and manufactured between late 70s to early 90s (China has nearly retired all Flankers that entered into service in early 90s).
F35 is mighty indeed, but is it significantly better than J20? no one could say that. Once Japan receives all 100+ F35, China would have 500+ J20.
This is the real problem for Japanese Self-defense force as a whole, that the air superiority is on China's side if the US stand by. Then it's gonna be a PLAAF vs JMSDF massacre with PLAN being absent.
very nice ,love from a Chinese military fan.
我从B站看到搬运过来的...😁
Where do you buy those cool ships and how much do they cost?
im not sure if i explain clearly becuase my english is really bad. but if you need more resources such as papers or image of chinese navy future plan about aircraft or destroyers, you could touch me with wechat. i have some new image about type003, type075 and new destroyers which they are all publiced by chinese military forum
Where can I buy like these semples?
051and 052 has a big difference. 051 use steam turbine engine. 052 use CODAG.
Exactly...and that is why two of each were built. The new CODAG was a risk for the PLAN...and it worked out for them just fine and has led to the six "Cs" and approaching 20 "D"s. Buit at the time, the PLAN also built the two 051Cs as a way for them to continue producing decent long range anti-air vessels should they have problems with the CODAG. They knew that they could produce the diesels for the 051C and have a decent ship...and they did and use the two Type 051Cs to this day. . As I say, the CODAG worked out fine for them and they eded up with six "Cs" and now approaching 20 "Ds".
any chance on making ROK navy ships/or strike group if so please do.
I looked and even in 1/700 scale there are no escort models. KDX-1, KDX-11, or KDX-111...or the subs or FFGs. So I cannot do it. I did order two Dokdos in 1/700 scale, but without the escorts there is no sense in really building just those.
It's surprised that you know so much about the chinese navy . Give a thumbs up ! By the way , we say that PLA was the biggest fan of US military force lol .
it carries Japanese torpedoes?
I wish the US would get on with a Ticonderoga replacements...
If I said they carry Japanese torpedoes tat was a mistake. They have their own, fairly strong torpedoes. But yes, absolutely, we need to move forward ASAP with the Tico replacement.
Where did you get these models
Where can i buy these online?
you know The fact still has 052DG or 052E
Jeff is confused a lot about the abcd. In those Chinese name.but good video.
Do you think there will be a type 52E Jeff or is that just talk on the forums that will lead no where?
I do not believe they will make a Type 052E. With the "D" they have gotten about as much as they can out of that hull. It will be a new follow on design at some point...but they still have quite a few Type 052D to build.
Jeff Head there is a image leak showing that they make the 052d a longer with extended helicopter deck. Some ppl refer it to 052e. Other change remains unknown.
055 electric drive rail gun electrics icbm missile also hyposnic missiles
Well, o sign of any rail gun on the 055 yet. The US would have a rail gun available now except Obama cancelled the at sea qualifications. I expect if Trump is re-elected, that is wil occur i the ehar future, The laser is available and being planned for several vessels.
Real hardcore!
U must see Indian navy kolkata & vishakapatnam class destroyer . We also made an aircraft carrier
👍👍👍👍
THank you my friend.
How is the us going to catch up? If only they hadnt wasted so much time with the LCS and Zumwalt failures
wow electric drive and rail and laser weapons go
Focus!!! Focus!!! Focus!!!
👍
You are wrong. 051 and the type 052, Is totally different FRIGATE. Just like 056 054 and 055 is not same Technical line。They built them in the same time。051 Is more like Russian system, And the other like America。 LIKE 051C have russian
Air Defense System крепость-M,and 052c have 346 system, they are the same age differnt platform,。 PLAN,Put them in the service, Use them and compare them, In the end, they abandoned the 051, And decided to develop the new 052 models。 So they have 052, B,C and D.
WG, I am not wrong at all. The Type 051 and o52 spoken of here are not frigates at all...either of them. They are destroyers. The original 051s have all been decommissioned now. But the PLAN still has the two 051C destroyers and are using them. I am not wrong about that at all. They both have 48 VLS cells and were built to be a guarantee against the Type 052C when they were built because of the new engines. The Type 052C won out and they ended up building six of those and then went on to the Type 052D which they have standardized on. But they still operate both Type 051C vessels,
115- Shenyang
116-Shijiazhuang
And I know I am right about this...not wrong. In fact the single Type 051B vessel, 167-Shenzhen, is also still operational and went through a refit in 2015 where they took the old 8 cell missile launcher off and changed it with a 32 cell VLS and new sensors. That VLS is similar to the Type 04=54A FFG system, and has modernized the Type 051B considerably where it will probably be in use for another 15 years. They also took the old 37mm guns out and put on two H/PJ-11 eleven-barreled 30 mm CIWS, Type 1130. So just be careful when you say someone is wrong, especially someone who has been analyzing the PLAN buildup for the last 20 years.
@@JeffHead-IdahoUSA I think what he means is that 051B and 052B are in different technical lines of destroyer. The PLAN has a restrict rule on naming their ship. For a ship's class code, the number signs their hull. ships like 051B 051C are based on the same platform "051", and the 052B, 052C, and 052D are based on a new designed platform "052".
I missed name the 2nd and 3rd vessels. The second is the Type 052B and the 3rd is the Type 051C. I knew this and have known it for many years...I just made a mistake and that probably led to the whole discussion. Thanks for pointing it out.
